1. sometimes he uses sarcasm,

if an outrageous claim is made on a gambling forum the person reading has 3 choices

1. he can ignore it____________well, if the post is not shot down the false info could be harmful to a newbie

2. he could post and try to undermine it with reason - I wouldn't do this - I'm not going to counter with reason when someone posts something I regard as ridiculous

3. he could respond with sarcasm

there's nothing wrong with using sarcasm to shoot down a bad post as long as there's nothing personal implied -

it is imho the best way to show the ridiculousness of some of the claims made on this forum

the bad post is shot down and there is often some humor in the sarcasm

if the person who made the very bad post now feels bad after being on the receiving end of sarcasm - well, life is very tough sometimes - there is a pretty good chance they will bounce back relatively unharmed

This is the most often cited and most ridiculous reason that people use to give other people a hard time about their claims. Why, how dare you, this is so outrageous it could hurt some poor little newbie and he could think it's real and go into a casino and lose his house! So we have to protect him by constantly pointing out how wrong you are so we can protect all those little newbies.

There's almost nobody on this forum who gives one flying freaking ever loving donut about any newbie who ever lived or will live. Not a single person here positions himself at the door of his Casino and asks everyone as they come in if they're a newbie, I can help to save you from losing your money. Nobody cares what some dopey jerkwad does with his money. Saying you care about newbies it's just an excuse to give somebody a hard time, admit it.

Well that's what you said about Alan Mendelson (R.I.P.):

in any event - I'm done commenting on your posts - life is too short to get animated over your nonsense

I'm going to leave the work for others - I've done my share - you won't ever again be bothered by me
.

I didn't follow up to see if you kept to it, but Alan did die just a couple months later so probably you did.

I used to try and help out newbies in the casino and they always resented it so I quit doing it. I remember this one guy was betting on the second and third dozen in roulette and he won like six in a row and he was hopping up and down with excitement. So I told him the reason he's winning is because the first doesn't was sleeping, it was inactive but when it wakes up and he loses his first time, quit. Quit betting and walk away with your winnings. Did he do that? No no no, when he started losing he was losing twice as much as he was winning so he actually doubled down on his bets and soon his winnings were gone and so was all his own money. Then of course he started screaming at the dealer that she cheated him. This is what happens when you try and help people, they don't like it they don't want it they don't understand it just let them learn on their own.

I like all billryan’s history and story tidbits.

I agree. I actually think billryan is a good writer and when he posts to tell a story or to inform people about some topic he is excellent. On those occasions he contributes great content to the forum IMO.

However, IMO, a significant fraction of the time he posts to mock or denigrate people. More than any other person in the forum he is an artist when it comes to circumventing the rule about forbidding personal insults.

Given that our most prolific poster exists, I think this statement is one of the more ludicrous I have seen from a moderator and (even more) evidence of an extreme personal bias you show.

I guess you have never been to a real roulette table in a casino where there are lots of women and men screaming when their number shows up. That says a lot about your playing credibility.

You can go to a casino for a year they never see that once. How many times a day does it happen at a craps table. Hell, How many times an hour. I've seen women at the craps table scream every time somebody throws the dice for no reason whatsoever. One thing I cannot stand is a roulette table right next to a craps table, drives me nuts.

If that's true then why isn't everybody at every other table in the casino screaming. Why aren't the blackjack players screaming, why aren't the baccarat players screaming. Craps aren't screaming because they're having fun, they're screaming because they can get away with it. If it was anybody else in the casino at any of the other tables screaming like the craps players scream all the time people would be telling them to shut the hell up because it's so annoying.

Craps tables are louder because there are far more people there and most are betting on the same outcome. But yes, craps attracts a more social player that does this.

It just depends on the person. I've seen someone win or lose $500,000. hands and show no emotion whatsoever, and I've seen people jump up and shout over a relatively small blackjack, roulette or baccarat win.

When I was playing the Wizard witnessed session, and that was at a public table actually, when I won 8/8 on the only Player run of the shoe, everyone present including the dealer and the Wizard himself clapped.

So in your world they scream just as much at the baccarat table as they do with the craps table. I'm certainly glad I don't live in your world because the casinos I go to 98% of the times is a baccarat players are very well behaved. Even in Vegas. . So you think that once in awhile when somebody makes a little noise at a roulette or baccarat table that's equivalent to screaming constantly at the craps table. I can go weeks and never see anybody make a peep at my local baccarat table yet at the craps table is unending noise and to you this is the same.

I explained this in detail in my baccarat thread. Europeans introduced Baccarat to Asia and the Europeans themselves would yell monarchy monarchy when they wanted a face card to appear. To the Asian ear it sounded like they were saying monkey and that's where the phrase came from.

I got confused. I thought this was the suspension list thread, but found out it’s the usual BS EB thread about who screams more, baccarat players or craps players.

I mean this seriously. The rule that you can be suspended for hijacking a thread needs to go. I’d bet I have hijacked well over 100 times. And EB over 1000.

Each of us when we hijack thinks what we are posting will be interesting to other forum members.

Mods….. what do you think?

Ehh.

There's, what, like one person suspended at any one time? Maybe two on bad week? And usually the reason is pretty obvious and no one objects or cares. What is there to talk about that off-topic banter is going to steal the spotlight away from? This is probably the one thread where hi-jacking doesn't really cause any problems.

It seems that most hijacking cases where a mod gets involved usually just result in a "take this somewhere else" type reprimand. The only suspensions I can remember were repeat offenders and cases where it was an accumulation of violations, of which hijacking was one. I'm OK with the rule. Just because it's a rule doesn't mean that violators are necessarily suspended.

Personally, I'm surprised that the mods let this thread go as far afield as it has. However, I also thought the kibosh would be dropped on the Presidential Election Betting thread by now, as well. I guess they have been a man down this past week. Or perhaps a new "kinder, gentler" brand of moderation is upon us!

Ouch! I'll submit myself for review and birching.

Consider for a moment an empty box. Much can be placed in the box, but only one item can be placed in an empty box.

Are WoO/WoV still top results for the search? Ashly encourages me and tries to set me up on dates, so I'm a really lousy reference.

I'm so out of it, I mean, I didn't have a clue that the Wizard has a boyfriend who cheats. Or does he ?!? I am so confused. What are we talking about? What am I supposed to review? Can someone post a picture since I don't seem to understand the words?

I am going to retreat to my secret hiding place beneath the basement stairs.

As Joeman has said, hijacking, when it amounts to normal conversation and lacks malice, will often not be punished with suspensions. Instead we might
- post a warning and ask people to stop, OR
- split off the side conversation that has developed into a new thread.

There are hijacking cases where moderators are more likely to use a suspension:
- a member repeatedly jumps into multiple threads with random off-topic posts for no apparent reason
- a member or members appear to be intentionally high-jacking a thread because they want to disrupt a conversation they disagree with or because they have an oppositional attitude toward some of the participants

The WOV Forum is not The Squid Game. The moderators' goal is to have a functioning forum; rather than to suspend as many people as possible. We try to use common sense.

I have been considering breaking off the "genocidal dictators conversation" into its own thread, but I've been busy and aspects of our software make this a time-consuming task.

More reasonableness, this is going to make some people very unhappy.. They want to see heads roll, they want to see everything controlled like this is a British ship in the 18th century. A flogging on the foredeck every day at noon.

I think over all, people who are dubious of what someone has to say, should just post once or twice how they feel, and then let it go. Repeating trolling doesn't make their position any more clear, and leads to unproductive feuding - not to mention hundreds of pages long threads where someone who is genuinely interested in the topic has to then wade through all the repetitive naysaying.

It's not like we have a massive membership where something might be overlooked. We all know each other by now.

I agree 100%, and it's why some of us wish the mods would crack down more on some of these unproductive threads and the obviously false claims contained therein. I seriously have genuine interests in, for example, betting systems and methods, but it is usually clear when they are full of **** and mathematically dubious, and those are the threads that should be stamped out ASAP, and their proponents not be allowed to continuously promote their false beliefs ad nauseum.

Yes, I realize I have been part of the problem.

Clearly Michael would be the one to answer the questions about the "is my boyfriend cheating" era which I have to believe preceded the websites we know now

And to be clear, I was just ribbing Dieter about 'taking a shot at the Wizard' which I'm confident he was not ... being likely unaware this used to be a Wizard thing at all

I would have been unaware except it used to be still a part of WoO for a long time, though no longer being solicited by the site at some point. WoO was started in 1997 and may or may not have had a section to go to, to ask about boyfriends, in the beginning. Latter day is-he-cheating questions were coming in, as I remember, if so they must have been coming in because the ability to find Mike and ask him was still in place somehow. Just by googling? None of them seemed like spoofing.

I have to wonder how it got started. I'm guessing it was an early venture by the Wizard into the world of the internet to see what could get going ... a bit of impishness being acted out to try to get these particular questions coming in? As a result, learned a lot and got the confidence to start a website on gambling? Perhaps the Wizard will see this and provide some answers.

I googled the question "is my boyfriend cheating?" and the wizard does not readily come up, perhaps not at all, but I didn't keep trying

clearly at one time it would be one of the first things to come up if you asked

various remnants of old stuff comes up if you include wizardofodds.com

Thank you!

As to other comments, for some reason in the early 2000's I ranked very well for phrases such as "Is my boyfriend cheating on me?" Somehow the search engines gave me a lot points for that topic. However, the questions dwindled off. I haven't been asked a relationship question in years now.

Given that WoO is a gambling website, i was surprised you got so many relationship questions.

How did you have such wise insights into relationship issues?
