I will still update the attendee list, should anyone express interest. We have yet to hear from some other locals, too. I name no names. And remember you can bring other people along. There are no restrictions as to who may come.
Short joke: I set up a web board to sell stolen credit cards, and got spammed with gambling posts!
This is the kind of thing that, as harry Turtledove likes to say, it would be funny if only it were funny.

You must have never lived anywhere between New Haven CT and NYC.
Quote: buzzpaffNext you will be telling me no Jerry Logan either ???
Maybe there is a god :P
I just paid for my trip, BTW.
Quote: Wavy70I would be a guarantee attendee but after the Wiz's review of Laughlin I have to stay another night.
To quote Victor Hugo "?"
Anyway, rather than a mindless bump, I'd like to comment about how much my trip cost. I think I found a really good deal, or a bait and switch mechanism. You be the judge.
Item: I bought a package comprising of flight and hotel at the Volaris website (http://volaris.mx). The price for a round-trip MEX/LAS and 12 nigths at 4 Queens is 12,425.82 MXN (that's Mexican pesos), or about $995 USD (that needs no explanation). This breaks down as 8,261.82 MXN for the hotel and a fee for issuing the ticket, and 4,164 MXN for the flight.
Item: Volaris is a "low cost" airline. It uses a three-tier system for tickets, which vary in price. There are differences for on-time guarantees and charges for ticket changes, but the main difference is in the checked lugagge allowed. Lowest tier is 25 kg (about 50 lbs) for international flights, while the highest, most expensive, tier allows for 45 kg (~ 90 lbs). Last night, the ost for a MEX/LAS roundtrip at the lowest tier was 5,140 MXN, or almost 1,000 MXN more than what I paid.
Now, the proof of payment I pritned off the airline's website says I'm entitled to 50 kg. checked luggage. That would mean the ticket was issued at the most expensive tier, yet it was worth less than the lowest tier? So it's either a great deal, or all smoke and mirrors. You know, they quote a higher price for the flight alone, and a great price on the package, so you book everything together.
I'm not complaining. It's well within my budget, and much cheaper than I expected. I had counted on spedning perhaps 20,000 MXN.

So...stay another night. It's a pretty drive between Laughlin and LV - drive up for the meetup, drive back so that you're heading into Laughlin at dusk. You won't regret it...

If I understand Wavy70's plan correctly, he will be in Laughlin on Thursday night but has decided to stay over for (another) Friday night. He will be in Las Vegas for Saturday night but is not confident of getting into town in time for our Saturday noon gathering for WoVCon][.

He can catch up a couple of hours later at El Cortez.
What are the distances and speed limits involved, BTW?

I'd imagine that at least some folks will be together for several hours at/following the event. I'm about 90% sure that I can attend, BTW.
It's 98 miles from Laughlin to downtown. The first 20 miles or so is a very fun but slow climb out of the valley on NV 163, the remainder is a virtually straight shot on U.S. 95 where the speed limit is 65 (but everybody drives 75...)
Quote: rdw4potusI'd imagine that at least some folks will be together for several hours at/following the event.
Possible, but unpredictable.
Quote:I'm about 90% sure that I can attend, BTW.
That would be great. I have you listed as hopeful.

How slow? Leaving Mex City to Toluca, for example, involves a gradual climb from 2300 to 3050 meters over about 20 miles. I usually manage it at 80-90 kph. Still assuing an average speed of 55 mph it's about 110 minutes' drive. Not too bad, but also not something I'd care to do while on vacation (not with the drive back in the early evening)

How brave are you? The first time I did it, I averaged maybe 40-45 MPH. There are many curves, and some distracting scenery (moreso on the way down into Laughlin). Last time I went to Laughlin, I did it at 60MPH without braking. It's a truck route, and passing is a primary source of difficulty/speed-loss.
Quote: rdw4potusHow brave are you?
Interesting question....
I drive cautiously. But I'm also used to the Mex-Toluca highway, which is a long way going up, then a long way going down. Mexico-Cuernavaca is worse, as the exit/entry to Mexico City is a steep slope with many curves along the side of a cliff. I'm used to doing 50-55 mph there.
Quote: teddysWell, you must stop at Terrible's Casino Searchlight. I don't think I've done one trip without stopping there. Besides that, there is absolutely NOTHING on the way from LV to Laughlin.
Have you played the bowling game there? I've stopped several times (usually in frustration after finding the BJ game at the Seachlight Nugget closed), but never played the mini bowling game.
Quote: DocGoogle Maps estimates the driving time from the Aquarius in Laughlin to the Four Queens in Las Vegas as 2 hours even.
I've made that drive, and I think you have too. Does it take you 2 hours? It's a little under 100 miles, and except for the very beginning and end, and the bit in Searchlight it's all marked at 55MPH+. Why does google think it takes that long?
Quote: rdw4potusWhat are Dan's work hours? Maybe a post-WOVcon field trip is in order?
Noon I can do, and will do. See you there! Dan.
Quote: PaigowdanNoon I can do, and will do. See you there! Dan.
Good to have you there!
I'll add your name to the list.

Do you perhaps work that evening? Should we move our late (after El Cortez) game to Henderson?
Quote: DocDo you perhaps work that evening? Should we move our late (after El Cortez) game to Henderson?
If a trip to Henderson will be made that evening, let me know. I'll do the Summerlin and North casinos on Friday, and hit the Henderson's (that I don't have) that night.
Well second favorite! LOL
Google, as well as a lot of other services and GPS devices, use a common database which includes not only speed limits, but typical average speeds as well as traffic light timings. It's usually pretty accurate if there aren't any accidents or other delays.Quote: rdw4potusWhy does google think it takes that long?
Quote: buzzpaffMini bowling ? Balls weight 3 lb 12oz, alleys same length, but smaller pins? Is it duckpin bowling, Baltimore's favorite indoor sport?
Well second favorite! LOL
The balls are tiny. I would describe it as elongated non-inclined skiball with pins. Is that duckpin bowling?
But I will try to hit the 4Q for lunch. At least I should see you at the El C. That has been my LV home for about 6 years. BestvRoom DT is the Vintage suite. 3rd floor of the old building.
Duckpin bowling? Ahh I have my own bag and set of balls. Yup In DP you got 3 balls w no holes not one ball w three holes. I grew up in atown of 40k people and no less than 4 duck pin alleys.
Friend and I might have become rich. We were first to think of putting rubber om sideboards to increase action. My buddy's
idiot brother-in-law was mechanical engineer and convinced us it would never work.
Then Brunswick did it and scores went up, faith hope and charity almost disappeared etc. GRRRRRR
Now I got buy a lottery ticket if I wanna get rich. SIGH

Pardon me for being naive, but it Jackie G plaza named after " The Great One. " Still love his performance in "The Hustler." gave George Scott and Paul Newman a run for their money.

I can't think of a good joke this early in the morning. So I'll just quote Groucho Marx:
Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read.
I will be going to Chicago Brewing Company though, because the pizza there is excellent. Everyone will enjoy.
Quote: FinsRuleI wish I could attend, but I'll be in town 2 weeks after.
We'll miss you :(

I chose it becasue I'm staying at the 4 Queens and it was convenient. So it was all "luck" :D

that has never stopped you before!
Dolly Parton starred in the movie version, and the plot is similar, although there are expanded scenes with the Sheriff and some songs were added to the movie, most notably "I Will Always Love You." It's not a show for children at all, but even if you're not a musical person, it has a lot of humor and a good pacing to it that will keep you interested. If done well, the show is a lot of fun. If it's performed in 90 minutes (as is the Vegas standard), then I imagine you'll be laughing most of the time.
The show performs every night at 7:00pm while WoVCon is going on, so if interested, let me know.
I'm coming to Vegas, but I need to be there on 5/2, and there's no way I'd be able to stretch the visit past 5/6. Heck, I doubt I'll stay that long.
Sigh....

There's always WoVCon ]I[ Next year. In fact, you should grab the chance to organize it. That's one way you're sure not to miss it.
Good luck with your side bet!
By the way, as promised elsewhere, here's a thread to discuss WoVCon 2A. I proposed Thursday 5/3.

Instead of a joke (much to the relief of everyone, I'm sure), I thought I'd ask those on the maybe lists whether they have a more firm idea bout their attendance. Thank you.
Quote: rdw4potusYou could move me to the "likely" list, and i should know for sure by midweek.
