At least he's right.
Forgiving student loans won't hinder that process...without total reform of the student loan process, new students will still borrow and colleges will likely continue to raise prices.
Just like you can't fix the border with just a wall, you can't fix this problem with just loan forgiveness. Perhaps forgiving student loan interest and limiting the amount of loans to the current levels, or lower, would be a start. We cannot possibly solve every problem with "gives" of all kinds...

Just weird. Seems conservatives watch more CNN then libs
Quote: RonCThe current student loan situation has allowed colleges to raise prices at will because students can "afford" to attend, based on the availability of loans.

I don't agree with Warren regarding the ,loans. You borrow, you owe
I do support the free education to a certain extant.
Private colleges should remain private
but
Public universities , I can see a system where it becomes free like grade school
I'm ok paying for that. I already pay for education up to 12th grade and I have no kids but its my tax money well spent

The system is out of date. Why does it take 4 years? Why do we still take all these unrelated courses? Many colleges need to close, I mean possibly 20%. Stop making loans altogether for degrees with no career prospects. Women's Studies is not a career, it is a hobby. Get schools to slim down administrative costs. Set a percent limit. Do students really get any value at all from a school having a "Director of Diversity?" I can't see how that improves education.
The good news is the kids are fixing it from the ground up. Attendance is falling. ROI is being looked at. Certifications are getting more value than degrees. The scam is shown for what it is.

If you want to be a baboon that is fine. But what on earth does an arts course have to do with setting up computer networks? No need for half or more of the general education courses people are forced to take. Just the education-industrial complex shaking the kids down.

College is a marathon, not a sprint. I think a good deal of the college experience comes from doing with less for four years. I remember working a part time job and barely having beer money, watching my friends who didn't go to college have cash in their pockets and by the time I was a Senior, many were driving new cars and sharing beachhouses in the Hamptons. The best of us suck it up and drive through it.
Everyone experiences life. Evidently, not everyone enjoys it.

If people like art, fine. Not once in my career has my boss cared what I knew about it. If I do want to study it I can go to a museum for free. FWIW the last few shows I have worked I did not like the piece you were "supposed to like best." Always liked some side piece better. I would never stand in that line to see Mona Lisa, would go to the impressionists hall.
Why no need for art appreciation class:

The "college experience" is for upper class white kids. I did not grow up on their side of the tracks (or in my case the state highway that split the good side of town from mine.) Half of what the degree gives you is street cred for sticking to things. I had some fun times, but today I would never do it.
What we seem to have is too many college admins too impressed with themselves. Too sold on their faculty lounge talk about "making complete people" or whatever they want to call it, not turning out employable adults. Except for the Husbandry majors, people go to college to get employable. Then you get out and see you are not special at all.
Better to get a CCNA or Comp Tia cert. 1/4 the time, better results.
Quote:Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem.
For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace - all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed.
So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump's limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.
Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing - not once, ever.
I don't say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility - for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman.
But with Trump, it's a fact. He doesn't even seem to understand what a joke is - his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.
Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers.
And scarily, he doesn't just talk in crude, witless insults - he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness.
There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It's all surface.
Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront.
Well, we don't. We see it as having no inner world, no soul.
And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist.
Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that.
He's not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat.
He's more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege.
And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully.
That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead.
There are unspoken rules to this stuff - the Queensberry rules of basic decency - and he breaks them all. He punches downwards - which a gentleman should, would, could never do - and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless - and he kicks them when they are down.
So the fact that a significant minority - perhaps a third - of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think 'Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy' is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that:
Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are.
You don't need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man.
This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss.
After all, it's impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of sh*t. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum.
God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid.
He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart.
In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws - he would make a Trump.
And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish:
'My God... what... have... I... created?
If being a tw*t was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set.

As long as the buyer (prospective enrollee) is aware of what you are getting for what you pay for, I seeno problem with expensive colleges. Of course it is not right for everyone. But AZ's take seems to be that it's right for no one and I strongly disagree with that.
I use my son, the crossword puzzle kid, who is an entomologist as another example. He was at Carnegie Mellon undergraduate and took one more class each semester than he needed to, but always at the maximum before there was an extra charge. I asked him why he wanted to work that hard and he told me he would never in his later life be able to take the philosophy or music class that he could now.
You can try for a century, but you could never convince me I wasted the $250k on his education.

No, that is not what I am implying. I am saying at least half the people entering do not belong there. The dropout rate alone shows this. You had the resources to spend on your son at CMU, a good thing. But to borrow to do that is crazy. If someone borrows to take the world-famous drama program there on the finger they are behind for life. For every Lenny and Squiggy that come out of that program, 100 will go nowhere.
