The word atheist has been coming up in the 2016 Election thread with many proclaiming their atheism. It has come up throughout this forum from it's inception. I'll pose this here rather than interrupt an ongoing thread.

The atheists on this forum seem to be of above average intelligence for the most part, some way above average. Is there a correlation? Are smart people more likely to be atheists? Have there been studies done?

There's a significant correlation.

There's also a correlation between kids who were molested by church leaders and atheism.

Everyone has a choice.

Not so.

Think of it this way: we are either right handed or left handed.

Did we choose?

Or this: some people can detect the smell of sulphur in their urine after consuming asparagus, and some cannot.

Did they choose?

Same with sexual orientation: it is not a conscious choice, it is simply how we are.

I've not quite figured out the "we have a choice" sentiment. Is that person saying they are equally attracted to men and women?

I think only bisexuals say they spend any time thinking sexually about both sexes. Gay people and straight people don't. Or if they do, it's such a small percentage of time, it doesn't affect their sexual preference.

Gays do not choose to be gay, that is simply who and what they are. Bull$#@%. You said it yourself. Everybody, without exception, is free to choose and has chosen to believe in their chosen religion: they aren't born that way, they have freedom of choice.

Some people are born with something where even at a young age they are attracted to the same sex(born gay or whatever you want to call it). They may choose no not act on their instincts, but that's like asking a straight person to not be attracted to the opposite sex.

When I was younger I believed it was a choice and they were just overly sex driven. I though that because I didn't know any better. There's more and more evidence showing you are born gay.

It's hard for me to believe you're not born gay. There's far to much heartache and pain, especially for teenagers, ones who even commit suicide.

What teenager would choose to be gay with all the possible challenges that come with it? Disappointing family, subjected to ridicule, outlasted, hated, bullied, teased, beaten.

Think of sexual preference like this. Imagine a 3D graph that has a spectrum on each axis. Male/female, masculine/feminine, trans/non-trans. There's some point in that space where your sexual preference radiates out from forming a sphere. Your sexual preference is what it is though your perception of where your sphere is located may be influenced by your interactions with other people. And someone who shares similar attributes to you but whose sphere is different than yours may be difficult for you to comprehend.

Haiti.
Yes Haiti, not the brightest spot in the Western Hemisphere.
Do you know the population numbers? Me neither, so I looked them up. (Kid homework project).
Looked up world population, by country.
Was blown away by the result. I have obviously lived a sheltered and dumb life.
Everyone knows the country with most population right? (China)
Everyone knows the country in 2nd right? (India )
Does anyone know who is 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th? I was amazed.
Not necessarily by who was in the 'top ten', but just how far out of the top ten our closest allies are.
Oh, BTW, 3-10 amazed me as well.

I've had that idea in mind for a while, but we've had rain here the last several days, with a forecast for more rain and total clouds on through mid week. Looks as if I will miss out on this one. They're a herd animal, not aggressive. (All cows, right, no bull?) Approach from behind and slightly to one side, not touching her, smooth movements (cows can see almost all the way behind them). Don't let any clothing flap in the wind, or make sudden, aggressive movements. You should be able to take the lead cow by the collar or scruff of the neck and lead her firmly to the side, talking gently and low as you approach and lead her. The others should follow. (grew up rural Midwest).

Hollering, beeping your horn, flashing lights, waving arms, etc just freaks them out.

You turn the f*** around, drive a mile or so up the road, wait for another car coming in the same direction you originally were going....and let that car figure out what to do. Cows and bulls are both extremely vicious. If you must, proceed with caution. Otherwise, you should turn around. You're lucky you survived.

Add the super-moon eclipse of doom into the mix and there's no telling what those awful monsters are capable of doing.

I am better than most of my friends at getting cattle where they need to go--such as enter a pen. I wouldn't get in front them as BBB says, but that would likely work well with dairy animals that are handled every day (but watch out for dairy bulls...they can have a meaner streak than some other types of bulls...). Our cattle are out in the field all day and don't take as kindly to handling, but I walk on the left side of them (unless I have to go to the left) and put my arm out (not flapping) to make me appear larger, then gently push them where I need them to go. I do mean gently--slow movements and gentle talking to them.

It works most of the time. If it doesn't, that cow may be off to market.

On the subject of cows on the highway, back in July when I posted my chip from the Golden Moon casino in the Casino Chip of the Day thread, I finished the long post with a way-off-topic tale about my experience with cattle in the road after I left the Golden Moon. Try not to hit a cow with your p/u truck at 4:00AM.
Topped a little hill running only about 45 MPH, what's that?
Bam de bam,bam,bam.
Crap, whole herd maybe 25 black angus in the road, missed one or two but got the 3rd.
Just side swiped it, tore up front bumper, grill, hood, left front quarter panel, driver door, left side of bed, and almost ripped off the rear bumper as well. Hell of a racket.

Drove couple miles up the road to a little greasy all night diner and called the local law and ordered breakfast.
Officer showed up, wrote up a report over a cup of coffee, and had me drive him back down to the scene of the accident. Herd still in road. I had expected a dead one to be laying there but nope, none of them looked hurt. Apparently they are more bounceable than p/u trucks. I went on to work as the officer herded them down the road, full lights and siren. What a way to start your morning ;-) This was before cell phone, so probably mid eightys.

Damn, I never knew cows were so vicious.

When I was a kid, we lived on a dirt road (for about 1 year). Almost every mornin', a pack-a-cows would come hollering down our road. Everyone had a big ass metal trash-can in front of their house (not really sure how that happened, but yeah). Anyways, these cow-f*ckers would knock down everyone's trashcans and eat a bunch'a trash outta the trash-cans and spread the trash all over the street.

Finally my mom got smart and bought a big metal wire thingie, so she'd tie the trash-can in front of our house to the fence in front of our house (so that the cows couldn't knock over the trash-can). Well, few days later, some Mexican would steal it (don't ban me BBB for using the 'M' word). My mother would buy another wire...few days later, same thing, a different Mexican would steal it. This went on for a little while until all the Mexicans in our neighborhood had a metal wire for their trash-can so that the cows wouldn't knock 'em over.

Sutter and his wife, Katey Sagal both have roles in the show. She will always be Peg Bundy to me. :-) Enjoy!

I couldn't watch GoT, much of LotR, or several other things (what was that Mel Gibson thing about William Wallace 20 years ago?) for the extreme gore. Had to leave during Apocalypse Now. Which probably makes this one unwatchable for me as well.

Braveheart.

Excessive gore doesn't interest me. I'm a fan of GoT primarily for the interactions between characters, as they manipulate each other. A show allegedly about executions doesn't seem like it has a lot of draw for my entertainment either.

I wasn't a fan of Sons of Anarchy either though, so there's that.

Run, don't walk, away from this awful series.
Bad writing, bad acting, bad FX, and a low
budget do not make for a good series.

The gratuitous violence is obscene to the
utmost degree, especially when it's against
children. The dialog is silly and dopey and
just plain weird half the time. Katey Sagal
is as bad in this as she was brilliant in SoA.
She has some kind of strange accent and is
laughable in a long grey wig. Ken Sutter's
huge ego is smeared all over this piece of
crap show, I don't see how it can make it.

This short trailer is far better than the cornball
show itself, which offends on so many levels.

Has anyone been mugged outside of a casino?

Yes. I was stabbed at work, about 35 years ago in a place that I managed at the time. I suppose the fellow had a complaint of some sort he wished to express, though I never found out exactly what it may have been during the process of getting him convicted and jailed. And only a few months later whacked with some kind of club by someone who came up behind me on a street in a random botched robbery attempt. Got a free weather prediction barometer out of it, because years later a particular bone still aches when the air pressure changes. Suggestion: don't be embarrassed to take some extra relaxation & reflection time if you come to feel that may be useful at some point. Professionals in the business of dealing with scumbags routinely do it, so no reason for anyone else to be reluctant to do the same. Sometimes these things can actually bother you more a little later than they did immediately.

Congratulations on your effective reply to her impolite request.

Tonight,

I was in an attempted aggravated assault. Someone tried to mug me with a knife.

Has anyone been mugged outside of a casino?

Mine was outside our restaurant after closing, not near a casino. When I opened the door, She had the knife high overhead and demanded my money.

I closed the door and pulled out my handgun and opened the door. She ran away.

Did you call the police?

I made spaghetti sauce last monday. I used veggys, ground meat, and canned sauce. I made it around 8pm. We didn't have containers for the freezer so input it into the refrigerator. Is it to late to freeze it or eat it now? Right now would make 4.5 days.
Expect the worst and you will never be disappointed. I AM NOT PART OF GWAE RADIO SHOW

3 days is usually the max life on anything prepared on the stove. That's my rule. Cook on Monday, eat by Thursday.

I saw "the Martian" yesterday in Toronto with my daughter. If you are a science-fiction lover or a science geek, this movie is fantastic. There is not too much action in the movie, and most of the movie (there is one major exception, one major ignore of fact, and 3-4 minor ones) stays true to the science. The first major exception (a major windstorm, impossible on Mars) sets up the rest of the movie.

4.5 of 5 stars.

Why did you open the door after closing it?

What was the point of that?

With the door closed you were safe; in opening it you exposed yourself to further risk.
"What, me worry?"
