Our software with the database is loaded on the server and 4 computer access it. We also scan documents and they get stored on the server. Very basic stuff.

Are all the computers and the server in the same building? Generally, if everything only needs to communicate via the local network I think it's easier to just have a server in house.

People sort of hype up the word server, but a server is just a computer with software that does servery things. You don't need anything highend for a simple database like that.

IMO, you need a simple in-house server. I'm archaic, but you don't want to put your data in the cloud. It won't cost that much (yeah, I'm spending your money, not mine) to service 4 terminals now, or 10 later, with basic non-graphics data.

Besides, you can always change to cloud and sell the server if you're not satisfied.

What does a server cost?
What does the Microsoft Windows Server software cost?
What does SQL Server cost?
What do UPS's cost?
What does a firewall cost?
Is a backup server required? Are you keeping it on-site? What about offsite backups in case your office burns down?
Do you want remote access to your server?
Do you need two ISP's in case one of them is down? Redundancy.
What happens when the power is out for more than a few minutes?

For the price of cloud servers now I couldn't imagine setting up my own unless there are regulatory issues preventing it.

Like I said, it 100% depends on the applications running on the server. I run into several situations with small businesses where a cloud solution does not make sense logistically or financially.

Surprisingly, the selection of cheeses at the nearest Sprouts is poor and overpriced to boot. My Smith's has all these fancy cheeses, and they have these baskets where they put piles of small portions. So you can try 2-3 for a few dollars.

All I really buy is fancy cheese, generic brand seltzer water, salami, fruit, peanut butter (the real kind) and dark chocolate. I'd wager that all of these things are overpriced at Sprouts.

Also, Sprouts closes 11pm so it's almost impossible to go there.

I have had numerous 24 hour grocers I use (worked swing/mids most of 25 years) reduce hours. It has always been after a 24 hour Walmart w/food opened within their marketing area.

Reason #49 to hate Walmart.

Cheap. That's all the game they got. And lots of times, once established in the area (which means they screwed out the competition), not even the cheapest available.

This is what I am struggling with.

With on site it is going to be approx 4k server, 1500 backup, $100 month offsite backup. about 2k in firewall and routers. So about $6-7K as a startup, or I can do $349 a month with backup on a cloud server. So 2 years of cloud will pay for the cost of on site hardware except support is free with the cloud so if we have downtime and I have to bring in someone with hardware then that would be another expense.

$349 sounds very high for a small business with what I assume will be very little utilization. I would have expected around $150 a month. If you haven't already, shop around.

Sprouts often has the big, glass bottles of San Pellegrino for $1. The gallons of spring water are often cheaper than Smith's('). Plus, Sprouts has those big bins of chocolate you can sample (probably why all their food costs more).

The last I was in Smith's was for their cooked chicken. I picked up a package and it felt light. Upon closer inspection some savage had eaten all the meat off the bones and put it back on the shelf. Welcome to Vegas.

I'm tempted to leave a nice FedEx box outside with 100bs of sand in it, just for fun. Or maybe fire ants.

Quote:

An alleged serial "porch pirate" accused of stealing everything from bed frames to ice climbing equipment has been busted by Colorado police.
Christopher Seth, 22, is facing a felony theft charge and up to three years in prison after he reportedly was seen swiping a package containing $200 worth of socks from a home in Boulder on Friday.
Seth admitted to driving around neighborhoods and using his girlfriend as a lookout while taking packages left outside homes by delivery services, KDVR reported, citing Boulder police documents.
A search of Seth's car and apartment netted 44 items believed to have been stolen from porches, officials said. Cops told the station the combined value of the packages -- now in police custody -- was $6,561, and included shampoo, Steve Madden boots, ice climbing equipment and a bed frame, among other items.
Police documents also said “several of the packaging slips in these boxes listed items that were not recovered at Christopher’s residence,” KDVR reported.

There's no secret. Just know what you're talking about before you open your mouth.

I would go with the fire ants!

I actually had the same thought about fire ants when I had a couple of packages go missing from my front porch a few years ago. Maybe put a little honey inside so they would be content until their package was picked up and agitated, like a delay fuse. :)

I decided instead to talk to UPS and my mailman and have them place the packages inside my back gate, which did solve the problem.

Why are you figuring that you need a $4k server?

When I spoke to a company today that price included backup. There were some fees per person with log In credentials. I haven't called anyone else yet.

I have also been confused about the server. I know we are fine with a low end server like a dell t30 which can be had for 600 but windows server 2017 with users is super expensive.

Make it 10 lbs of baking soda, repackaged in baggies. Cheap in bulk from the laundry area. Maybe the thief will snort it.

If that is including labor it makes more sense. Prices for equipment that I would buy for that type of setup would be around

- Switch/Router-Firewall should be around $400-$800
- Decent battery backups (UPS) are around $200-$500
- Server Cloud backup from carbonite is $600/year
- Other materials/cables to set that all up are like $300-$600

The low end Dell servers do not come with an OS installed, and Server 2016 essentials for 25 users is $400.

If he needs SQL Server probably another $2000. If this is his main server and the business is going to rely on it he might want dual power supplies and a RAID 5 configuration with at least three drives.

Like I said, all depends what you are doing and how much you want to spend on redundancy to protect yourself from downtime.

If you really can’t afford any downtime, you need to throw money at redundancy for a cloud system as well. If you’re internet goes down you’d have nothing. That’s preventable with redundant connections and cellular fallback, but that all costs money too.

I’m not trying to say that either cloud or onsite is 100% the best decision all the time, just that there still are use cases for both.

I was at a holiday party where they hire a company to set up play money casino games, and at the end of the night you trade your chips in for raffle tickets. Decent prizes too, I won a PlayStation 4 pro last year.

But what ticks me off is dealers who get stingy over rules when dealing with PLAY MONEY. They did deal blackjack shoe’s to the last card which was nice. But I just blew all my fake blackjack winnings on craps anyway. No raffle prize this year :(

There was a fake money casino for some event we did in high school for the seniors. I won a bunch of fake money, which was cool, but didn't think it was worth anything since I didn't know there'd be a raffle afterwards (I may have been a little tipsy when I showed up and must've missed the info on the raffle part). I gave all the chips to some girl and she ended up winning something she really liked. They were giving away a surf board, a big screen TV, and a bunch of other stuff.

The database is not that complicated. The database is run by a propriatory software. Today we elected to go with an on site server.
We bought
Dell t30 server $449
Server 2016 essentials $599
Dell removable backup driveway 2 tapes. $400
Dell firewall. $480
So all for about 2k.
I think we still need a switch. To start we are only going to have 2 computer and a network printer. Do I still need a switch for that? The firewall has a 5 port and the router has 4 ports. This part confuses me.

You don't really need that dedicated firewall appliance.

A router connects your network with the internet, most routers nowadays are also firewalls. I use a Ubiquiti Security Gateway at all of my network installs for a router/firewall. They are $110.

A switch connects devices within your internal network to each other, and the router/internet. If you have more devices than ports on your router, you need a switch. Think of it like a power strip for a network connection.

Contracts obtained by The Times show a congressional appropriation of just under $22 million beginning in late 2008 through 2011. The money was used for management of the program, research and assessments of the threat posed by the objects.

The funding went to Mr. Bigelow’s company, Bigelow Aerospace, which hired subcontractors and solicited research for the program.
Under Mr. Bigelow’s direction, the company modified buildings in Las Vegas for the storage of metal alloys and other materials that Mr. Elizondo and program contractors said had been recovered from unidentified aerial phenomena. Researchers also studied people who said they had experienced physical effects from encounters with the objects and examined them for any physiological changes. In addition, researchers spoke to military service members who had reported sightings of strange aircraft.

“We’re sort of in the position of what would happen if you gave Leonardo da Vinci a garage-door opener,” said Harold E. Puthoff, an engineer who has conducted research on extrasensory perception for the C.I.A. and later worked as a contractor for the program. “First of all, he’d try to figure out what is this plastic stuff. He wouldn’t know anything about the electromagnetic signals involved or its function.”

The program collected video and audio recordings of reported U.F.O. incidents, including footage from a Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet showing an aircraft surrounded by some kind of glowing aura traveling at high speed and rotating as it moves. The Navy pilots can be heard trying to understand what they are seeing. “There’s a whole fleet of them,” one exclaims. Defense officials declined to release the location and date of the incident.

Ahhh ok so a switch is really just extra ports? So if I only have 3 computers and 1 printer I am ok with a 5 port router. When we upgrade to 6 computers then we would run them into the switch and then the switch goes into the router? If that is the case I wonder if it would be best to just add the switch now so I don't have to worry about it next year when we add computers.

I predict a news story on a future development, "Pennsylvania man sues grocery chain for being 'back-roomed'"
the next time Dame Fortune toys with your heart, your soul and your wallet, raise your glass and praise her thus: “Thanks for nothing, you cold-hearted, evil, damnable, nefarious, low-life, malicious monster from Hell!”   She is, after all, stone deaf. ... Arnold Snyder
