I can;t remember being asked to show my receipt. I do give off a glare that says "leave me alone" to the people asking. I never have more than a few items. I cannot remember the last tine I did not use self-checkout at WMT as their cashiers tend to be very slow.

Aldi is now all but one self-checkout by me. The local chain has more and more all the time. It is here to stay and that is that.

I have been at WMT and there is a monitor showing you checking yourself out. It is there to say "we are watching." WMT surveillance rivals that of many casinos, and they can tune in to any store from corporate. If you are going to steal, do it elsewhere.

Exactly. It's psychological warfare.

And ASDA (UK's Walmart) retain in-store video footage for 16 days and car park ANPR records for 120 days. They say they do not actually do face recognition beyond displaying a box around faces. They also say they don't use face images and captured data for marketing, but there's nothing to stop them.
One interesting development is using the cameras and AI to automatically verify age when buying alcohol,

As an aside,...
UK ALDI and UK LIDL have really embraced technology in the last year. The apparently white paper price labels on the shelves are now digital wireless 'paperwhite' displays instantly and remotely updateable. You would hardly notice unless one went faulty and started flickering. The speed of checkout staff at both of those places are legendary. Local ALDI and LIDL don't bother disabling the security tabs at checkout and the alarms constantly go off. They just wave you through. They have security tags on most meat now, which is expensive here.

Our Aldi's are quickly rolling out self checkout, though Lidl has yet to change.

It used to be that ALDI and Lidl were distinctly soulless, third rate discounters avoided by many shoppers, but now they are right at the top of their game and building new stores like crazy.

Sometimes I have to curse Walmart. Some of their delivery drivers are really lazy pieces of crap. I ordered a bunch of cat food 2 days ago and it's single digit temperature outside but my driveway has been professionally plowed and the jerk still left all my stuff down by my mailbox at the very bottom of the driveway literally 12in from the pavement. They could have easily driven up the driveway put them on my deck and driven back down. So I had to get bundled up get out the toboggan and go all the way down there and pull the stuff up the hill. Now that same day I had a 35 lb bag of cat food coming from FedEx and he carried it all the way up the hill and set it on the deck. That's because they're professionals and Walmart drivers are usually fat ass Gen X women who weigh just under 200 lb.

Will wonders never cease, the mouth breathing morbidly obese functionally illiterate career Walmart driver actually put my order on the deck this time. If I wanted to go to the bottom of my driveway to pick up my orders I would just go to the store, duh.

A Florida man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he shot at a Walmart delivery drone.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office in central Florida received a complaint about the ordeal Wednesday, the office said in a Facebook post. According to the caller, a bullet hole was found in the payload the drone was carrying.
Witnesses pointed authorities to 72-year-old Dennis Winn, who interviewed with officials and later admitted to shooting at the drone one time with a 9 mm pistol, the sheriff's office said.

In police bodycam footage, Winn told police he tried to shoo the drone off and it didn't go away, so he shot at it.
"I fired one round at it," he said in the footage. "They say I hit it so I must be a good shot, or else it's not that far away ... I'm going to wind up having to find a real good defense lawyer."

He was taken into custody and charged with shooting at an aircraft, criminal mischief damage over $1,000 and discharging a firearm in public or residential property, according to the sheriff's office.

WMT by me just remodeled and if you look critically you can see why they rule retail.

Store only open about 10 years. Remember K-Mart? They rarely remodeled. One by my mother's I was shopping in the 90s. looked, and realized it had never been remodeled since 70s or even 60s. Said one did remodel after a huge fire.

So the WMT fixed small things. Their lot was a mess due to bad planning. Still not perfect, but way better.

They just slightly freshened the look. No wholesale remodel, but it is updated just so. And they moved some stock so you have to look for your regular item but see new stuff you might want to buy.

The register area is now all "Wendy's Style" with one feeder line to all registers. I still use self checkout, but you can see it will be faster.

I think WMT reached a peak in the late 2000s but they are not at all in decline. Just not the same hegemony they had then.

Wal-Mart is trash.

20-25 years ago I would go there at 2 in the morning to do my grocery shopping and feel totally safe.

Nowadays I could walk through the parking lot in the middle of the day and feel like I'm going to get shot before I get in the door.

Could be. I've actually noticed that the bigger the city, the trashier the Wal-Mart. Small town Wal-Marts are.... "nicer?"

Yeah, think you’re right. Small town Walmarts just are all there is sometimes or everyone goes there, bigger metro I think Aldi (or comparable chains) have taken a substantial chunk of the budget grocery shopping as they’ve expanded, and I think with the rise of online shopping it’s likely more people order online to avoid the Walmart experience altogether. And Costco, but that’s probably the same as it ever was, more of a sam’s club competitor, though they’ve already more or less squashed Sam’s seems like.

Think last time I was in a Walmart I had to ring a bell and wait like ten minutes for an employee to unlock something like a $10 item from pharmacy area, world’s gone to hell in a hand basket.

I think most big cities will have 10 or more Walmarts. Just find the one in the best neighborhood. I have about 15 near me and I don't live in a big city.

I also rarely see it. I stop at numerous WalMarts nationwide as I travel.
I can only remember a select few that had armed security on the graveyard shift.

My Walmart is super clean and it's mostly older people and hardly any minorities. I always feel safe going there. But I rarely do because I get all my groceries delivered now by Walmart. Which saves me so much time and effort that it's really quite amazing. Going out on my deck and bringing in the groceries is a far cry from driving to the store, walking into the store, walking around the store, spending God knows how much time in check out, loading my car and driving all the way home. For exactly the same groceries I can have delivered to my deck.

Speaking of checkout last time I was in Walmart two weeks ago all the self checkout lanes have changed and they now have store people stalking up and down the lines of checkout and literally looking over your shoulder. One of them was standing so close to me I asked him if I could help him with something and he just turned on his heel and walked away. Very annoying.

I have to order my toothpaste, floss, shampoo, deodorant, outdated printer ink, Microsoft keyboards & mice and BackUPS's from the WalMart website because those items I want can't be found in the store, or any store. It's just an opening for porch thieves but luckily I haven't been a victim yet. But they did short me on a double order of ink lately and I had to call in and get a refund; I'll reorder later.

WMT has stepped up the cleanliness since the 2000s. Back then they did not feel "dirty" but did feel "dingy." They got the message, better now.

I do not see the problem with going to the store but some people I guess love it. My mother and her sister use online order all the time. It does not take me much time and I often will just look around and pick out something for dinner when I had no idea what I want. I get about 20 items a week of which most are the same week in and out. But at the same time when I get them I see some new product and maybe add it on.

So much theft via the self-checkout they have to do this. I have met people laugh about it. It is the new thing.

Really, no reason to feel unsafe. Something tells me that is some of the usual suspects on here who need attention.

Essentially yes.
There is also a subscription service if you expect not to meet the modest minimum order quantities regularly.

Absolutely, that makes sense. A subscription service can be a great option if you find that meeting the minimum order quantities regularly is a challenge. It’s a convenient way to ensure you get what you need without the hassle of constantly placing orders. Do you have any recommendations for subscription services or tips on how to manage order quantities more effectively?

I moved to a better neighborhood years ago. Now I go to Target.

By the way, judging by your posts here you seem awfully offended that some people just don't like Wal-Mart. Like, you're taking it personally....LOL... do you work for them or something?? Relax, dude.

Offended? No. Get tired of people claiming they never shop there and they somehow do not pay their employees and every other stereotype. It is just another retail store, just that the management of it is so much better.

Racism? Not hardly. I don't know how it is where you live but in Michigan where I live 70% of the criminals in prison are people who make up 12% of the population. That being the fact, the absolute inarguable fact, when I get out of my car in a parking lot who should I be more leery of as far as crime goes. Maybe where you live it's totally different, good for you. Where I live you have to be aware of the facts and live your life in a responsible way.

You are correct. I worked with a bar in Vegas that was on the show and it was so made up. the star "employee" of the episode was not even an employee just an actor portraying the bartender.

It might not be "reality" but parts are indeed real. Violence at hip-hop places is well known. If you want a different examples how come even black parents want more white kids in the black schools? Why is there more violence in inner-city schools? Why are said schools an academic disaster?

Back to WMT, I have never felt unsafe at one.
