I like to ask this one, so I of course know the answer.

It was 28IF. Paul was 28 years old at the time. The whole album cover spawned the "Pawl is dead" legend. I think the license plate was interpreted as "What if Paul died at 28?"

Pretty close. "28IF" was to indicate that when Abbey Road was released, Paul would have been "28 if" he had survived (even though he was actually 27 when the album was released.)

The full license plate actually reads "LMW 28IF", which can be interpreted as "Linda McCartney Weeps."

I don't know why I never asked before, but it this available in a Podcast? I looked but didn't find anything.

While you generally have nice eye candy accompanying you, I'd much rather listen while doing other stuff.

I was just watching the live stream and I'm so confused by the answer to the first question.. what am I missing?

https://youtu.be/vxL3UnsHaws?t=456

Question: If dealt a 3 of a kind in video poker, what are the odds you will get a 4oak?

Answer (by the wizard): ~ 1/180

Is there something else implied here?

If I discard 2 cards for 2 new cards, I would expect to have 1/47+46/47*1/46 = 1/23.5 or ~4.2%

This seems so obvious that I can't believe there's no comment in the chat or the comment section for the video?

Just an update to an old livestream topic concerning Elvis Presley disappearing from Las Vegas culture. I can confirm that several Elvises hang out at the "Fabulous Las Vegas" sign, available for tourist photo ops.

So it is still possible to spot the king driving down the Strip.

Question:

Do you know Ski Wagaski, who has done extensive data collection over the years on Sigma Derby, and is well-known to regulars at The D and on the Sigma Derby Facebook page?

Would you have any interest in revisiting your analysis of the game given more credible information?

I used to have the PAR sheets for Sigma Derby. As I recall the hold percentages available were from about 6% to 18%. I think there were four or five available to choose from. I have no idea how the D has theirs set but I would doubt it would be under 10%. The math can be figured out just by looking at the odds offered for each race.

I guess it's like calculating the HE in futures odds for sports. I haven't taken the time to learn that.

I wonder if the creators of Derby ever thought there would come a time when people would bet the 200-1 every time while playing nearly around the clock. I assume they programmed the game with that possibility — but did they think it would be so popular (at least at one venue at one point in time) that it would happen constantly?

This was an episode that almost didn't happen. As you can see from the posts above, the show was plagued by technical difficulties with the Wizard posting increasingly pessimistic updates. After announcing he'd given up at 3:15, the feed unexpectedly began 5 minutes later with sufficient length to consider it an official (albeit short) episode.

Dear Wizard,

In episode #78 starting 46:10 you answered Eddy Gutierrez's question about "house money".

You explained: "[...]Once you win money, that is your money. It's no longer 'house money.' [...] Once it is in front of you, it's now your money. [...]"

This is completely valid from the house's point of view. Any player may freely decide to leave the table at any arbitrary point in time and take home the money just won.

However this doesn't necessarily mean that the house's view is the only possible way to see it. In the story about John and Mary, Mary quickly calms down once she realizes that John gambled with the casino's money and hadn't risked their household budget. John also understands after some contemplation that only Mary's five dollars were at stake during his visit, not the $175 he was bemoaning.

The same idea applies to progressive betting sequences on winnings (e.g. Paroli). Here the temporary intermediate winnings are the 'house money'. The player cannot freely decide over these as long as he sticks to his initial free decision to play that progression. The player has to follow the rules (e.g. a three step Paroli) of the progression of wagering his initial bet plus all the intermediate winnings until he either succeeds on the last bet (e.g. the third step) or loses on the way trying. In case of winning, the player can again freely decide about his own money.

The experiments suggested earlier might complement the answer to Eddy Gutierrez's question:
If the player faces a negative expectation game, which will be the most common, he or she should avoid progressions on winnings (e.g. Paroli) at all cost. This also means that the temptation of "playing with house money" on the contrary leads to an increase of the player's disadvantage.
If the player is sure to have found a positive expectation game, but only then, the progression on winnings, i.e. playing with house money, increases his or her advantage even further.
The experiments also show that using progressions on losses (e.g. three step Martingale) are the better choice for negative expectation games.

Comments are welcome.

I think the problem is the idea a player would change his betting pattern based on the idea he is 'ahead now' . Even if playing a horrible game like most slots, there is suppose to be a return to player. If that return momentarily exceeds what was brought, this doesn't mean much. You just need the return no matter how fast it's coming in, slow or otherwise. If all of a sudden you can increase your action, that makes no sense unless you could have all along anyway.

I guess it might be different for someone who almost never gambles, walks into a casino planning to lose it all, then just bets with 'house money' beyond original plans, because the plan still is to lose it all.

Questions for The Wizard's next livestream. He and others are welcome to provide answers here in the meantime, if you'd like as well.

Do VP games draw five cards randomly using the RNG, then draw the replacement cards for discards randomly using the RNG (minus the 5 cards already dealt) after the player discards, or does the machine draw the entire deck-or at least the first 10 cards-randomly once, and take cards off the top to replace the discards? Does it make a difference in game play or probabilities for the machines to do it one way and not the other?

How common are server based slots in LV casinos, or are casinos still mostly using EPROM-chipped games?

Out in the wild, are there video games for most table games, such as three card poker, Ult. TX Hold’ Em, Miss Stud and others, in addition to video BJ, video craps and video baccarat?

I’ve seen your videos analyzing certain betting systems. Have you thought of doing a video analyzing simple flat betting, and using that as a benchmark to compare the others?

On a related topic, have you considered running an analysis of several different betting systems including flat betting side by side, using the same parameters and comparing each betting system against each other using the same 1 million hands? It would be a pain in the neck to program, I’m sure, but would be a fun video to watch and would make for some super cool charts on how worthless the systems really are, and how some are more worthless than others.

Question for Heather: How skilled do card dealers get in stacking the deck and false shuffling and other nefarious tricks? Not that they would do so in a casino on the job mind you, but do they “practice their craft” and how often do dealers get caught doing so at a live game?

To object the proposition of worthlessness of betting systems, would the Wizard consider to
comment on the three experiments I suggested earlier and the comparison I gave there?
The underlying idea for the approach is also supported by an analysis of a regular passline bet, which is not related to any betting systems at all.

Additional question: What does Heather think of the three experiments I suggested?

To support the objection, if you allow, I would like to also add my analysis of how the amounts wagered, following a defined pattern, are not independent from a player's perspective.

My question to heather:

Would management allow roulette dealers to offer a side bet on double zero roulette tables which would fill the toke box?

The basic idea:
Player hands 7 $5 cheques to the dealer who puts them in the spot for that side bet.
Dealer plays a three step Martingale on red from these 7 cheques on the next rolls.
Upon the first hit the dealer pays the wager, breaking one of the $5 cheques into 5 $1 and returns wager and winning to the side bet spot.
Dealer drops one of the $1 cheques from the side bet spot into the toke box, then returns all remaining cheques worth $39 to the player.

Damage to the house:
None. Regular roulette being played along regular rules and regular payouts.

Damage to the player:
None. Disadvantage on this bet is even slightly lower than that of a single bet.

Damage to the dealer:
None. In contrary, tip bucket is being filled.

Please see the math as I've figured it out, here.
Please have the math confirmed by the Wizard to be sure it works, before deploying.

I'd be glad if this was of any value to dealers.

This was an episode that almost didn't happen. The show was plagued by technical difficulties with the Wizard posting increasingly pessimistic updates. After announcing he'd given up at 3:15, the feed unexpectedly began 5 minutes later with sufficient length to consider it an official (albeit short) episode.

Question: What is your current position on 6/5 blackjack? When it first appeared you declared it a travesty, not even deserving to be called blackjack. These days, however, you're more likely to defend the casinos that offer it. To put it another way -- Would you ever play 6/5 blackjack?

Forgive me if I've asked this already:

Have you met Ski Wagasky, a long-time compiler of Sigma Derby statistics and observations?

Do you have any interest in gleaning more info about this enduring piece of gambling technology?

Do you think the programmers anticipated that everyone would always bet the 200-1 longshot every time?

I sent this joke to my friends over text message but sent the answer as a voice-recorded message — the joke is particularly good for that format!

Thanks for answering my question about Sigma Derby! I'll try to get Ski in touch with you!

Derby players are fascinating to me because at one point I responded to a blog that posed the question "have you ever seen anyone hit the 200-1?" and even a old guy who said "many times" was doubted, yet now Facebook provides near-weekly evidence of people hitting the 200-1, including 20 coins bet for the max win of 4000 quarters! When I was a young man, I thought "who would ever bet 20 quarters on the 200-1?!"

D Lucky Slot Channel Review at WoV

As the Wizard mentions, some jurisdictions require cards be used to resolve all bets. So roulette wheels must use cards instead of a ball. The "mystery" is that they are hidden in slots so that they don't fly away as the wheel spins. When the wheel stops, the dealer pulls the winning card from its slot and reveals it to the players.

I'm afraid that Heather is not feeling well, so the Live Stream for Feb 16 has been postponed, probably until Feb 23.

I apologize for the inconvenience.

I must apologize again. Yesterday I was supposed to return from the Grand Canyon, but got stuck in Williams due to a snowstorm. I didn't get back in time for the Live Stream. I am thinking March 9 for the next one.

One of the audience questions was about paying for bonus rounds.

Do you think they may have meant the "fever games" model?
May the cards fall in your favor.
