I may be focusing on this too much. But last night there was another game in which NBA stars didn’t play for ‘scheduled rest day’ or ‘load management’ or whatever they want to call it. I’m trying to remember the last time a healthy Alex Ovechkin, Sydney Crosby, Patrick Kane, Cale Makkar, etc.. didn’t play. In baseball there is the occasional rest day, but it usually has some ‘righty/lefty’ reason. I understand once you’ve been eliminated from playoff contention, you want to see how your rookies/other subs can do. But these are mid season games.

Tage Thompson is GREAT.

Meaningless mid-season games. Players only have so many minutes in them. Why waste them on a game in December when you might need them in June?

Seven college football bowl games today. I love bowl games because all of them are on TV. I will watch all seven of todays games although that will require recording some to watch later today and tomorrow.

The best game available to me is the 6A Texas H.S state championship. Should be better than any of the six bowls.

I will check out the Jackson State game to see what kind of a coaching job Coach "Prime" unveils. Could be interesting.

That is obviously how management thinks! But they certainly don’t charge as if the games are meaningless. I really don’t get the ‘so many minutes in them’ allegation. You can’t convince me that if Durant had played in that extra game last week he’d be more tired for a June playoff game.

Some of these guys play in pre season international games, in those preseason Las Vegas games, in Olympics, etc…. If the load really mattered, players should be contractually prohibited from participating.

If you could only watch one 6A Texas H.S. state championship which would you choose, division I or division II?

And no, neither one outranks the other and the winners don’t play each other.

it was -

THE BIGGEST COMEBACK IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL

I believe I heard correctly that the Vikes didn't even make one first down in the first half

I've never been a Kirk Cousins fan - but hey, what can you say - kudos to THE MAN - he showed what he is capable of -

ESPN, who is of course, not infallible - did not pick Cousins as one of the top 10 QBs heading into the '22 season

For those of you that missed the best game of the day, SMU scored with 8 seconds left in the game and decided to go for two instead of kicking the extra point for the tie. They were unsuccessful and the Cougars prevailed 24-23 over the Mustangs.

Beg to disagree. Best game was Jackson State vs N.C. Central. J State scored tying TD on last play of game to go into overtime on a Hail Mary then lost in OT.

what makes the no. 100 so important____________?

nothing - other than our imagination - we imagine it is a very important number - so it becomes one - to many people

I wonder how many QBs have had more than 117 pass TDs with more than one team_____________?

Easily. The stars shined. Mbappe is so much better than everyone else it’s crazy.
First half looked like Argentina was FAR better than France.
Second half looked like France was FAR better than Argentina.

My son and a friend were lamenting that they finish the game on a gimmick, penalty kicks.

Normally I agree, but I felt like this year the shootout was an exciting way to end it. But yeah, in general I say they should decide the game by playing the actual game.

Yesterday I looked up the result of the '94 World Cup held in the U.S. and remembered, oh yeah, Brazil-Italy 0-0 with Brazil winning on penalty kicks. Zzzzz…

some sportsbooks are limiting the size of the wagers of sharps who they believe can beat the game

my two cents worth : let regulators decide on the largest wager anybody can make - on different payouts - such as $50K on a typical spread bet and $5K on a longshot bet

but don't pick on and reject the bet of any one individual - that's just WRONG - period

I believe the books are putting up tons of lines to please the longshot lovers and some of those lines are way wrong -

this reminds me of casinos hassling blackjack pros - it's terrible

On ESPN someone said the Patriots out Raidered the Raiders. I agree with that, Had the Raiders done that we would not all be shocked as something like that is almost expected of them.

Don't forget we have a bowl game today at 2:30 Eastern time (I have no idea why they chose that time slot. The game is on ESPN live from Conway, South Carolina. Probably the biggest game in Conway that doesn't include the Chanticleers. I can't imagine UCONN keeping this one close and expect the Thundering Herd to cover easily.

Sadly, this is the only college football bowl game today but at least tomorrow we have the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl to look forward to.

You do enjoy talking to yourself! I don’t think you announcing the schedule entices anyone who wasn’t watching to watch. (I may watch as I have UConn +10.5 and over 40.5)

By the way, imagine how little interest there will be in the non playoff bowl games once the top 12 teams are already spoken for.

That depends on the Bowl's location. Warm weather bowls will always be an excuse for a party. When I lived in Lauderdale, tens of thousands of people would descend on it for the Orange Bowl, most of whom didn't go to the game.

Big Blue went a long way toward clinching a playoff berth, but a guy on the radio is claiming they would have been better off if the game ended in a tie. They caught a huge break on the last non-call, but that's football.

Interesting argument to be had. NOW it would be inconceivable to not just ‘take a knee’ in ‘victory formation’, but if memory serves me correctly, back then the handoff was standard operating procedure.

I was at that game! Sitting 6th row end zone where (Herm Edwards?) ran the ball in for a TD.

I didn't get Cason Palmer. The one you are missing was a Giant, known more for his scrambling than his passing. Morton was on my list of possibilities. I figured it had to be a fairly modern player, as 200 passing TDs in a career used to be very rare, and few QBs were traded in their prime.

Of course, Fran Tarkenton of the Giants and Vikings.
So many better men, a few of them friends, are dead. And a thousand thousand slimy things live on, and so do I.

So I’ve been intermittently watching this absolutely pathetic UConn team playing a below mediocre Marshall team. Below mediocre is up 21-0. Uconn QB on first offensive play of the game pitches backwards to nobody. Next series he throws an INT, I swear, it seemed like an easy intentional pitch and catch to a wide open defender. Who caught it and ran for a TD.

But of course what hurts my brain the most is the stupid coaching errors. Marshall gets the ball deep in their own zone with around 1:15 left in first half. UConn has all 3 time outs. Any head coach with an IQ over 90 will see the result of the first play, and likely use the timeouts hoping to force a punt to get ball back with a little under a minute left. But what does Jim Mora do? He calls timeout, WITH THE CLOCK STOPPED, before the first play! They stop Marshall on 3 run plays, but can only stop clock twice. So they get the ball back with just a few seconds on the clock. Just enough time for their QB to add to his interception total.

How come coaches can’t make really simple obvious decisions that a random old guy (me) barely awake on my couch can?

Did anyone see the "commercial" with Tom Cruise (Bucs game) hanging out of a helicopter and thanking all for their support and wishing everyone happy holidays? If that was real, that is one crazy 60-year-old dude.

Yeah, even though he is past "middle age", I would still actually be more surprised if it was faked (at least partly because of this, see quote below) .

Quote (and link): "... Tom Cruise has become synonymous with the dangerous stunts seen in his action-packed movies because he performs all of them himself... " ( link ).

I was pretty sure it was real knowing of his previous stunt performances. The guy is remarkable.

I don't think I've seen a movie of his made after the Reacher movies, but have to wonder how watered-down these stunts are as compared to what a real stuntman could do.

At least for his past movies, I think he often (always?) insists on doing his own stunts (even when the director would prefer to use something like CGI, or similar).

Speculation (so not necessarily fact): IMO the stunts are not "watered-down", but I think the pressure to perform a stunt would be higher for a "normal stunt-person", mainly because if the stunt-person says something like "no, I don't want to do that", they would probably find future work harder to come by (?)

Wilt vs. Kareem - has to be the greatest big man matchup of all time

so very, very entertaining to watch these 2 great ones compete against each other

at 6:47 Wilt blocks 2 of Kareem's sky hooks in a row - nobody other than Wilt ever blocked the sky hook

Not true.

At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.

I'm pretty sure Bill Walton did as well, at least once. It was as unstoppable a shot as there was in that era.
Pre-cable, there weren't a lot of NBA games on television. Even most playoff games weren't broadcast nationwide, so seeing some of these stars was a special occasion. The Lakers and Blazers had an epic playoff one year, but only half the games were shown in NY.
The ABA had no national contract, except for the All-Star Game, and even the Net playoff games weren't shown on Long Island except for the minimal number of cable households.

okay, D. Rich - you got me there with Parish's block - I stand corrected - that was a great block

I didn't post it - but in that playoff game on the vid showing him blocking it twice in a row - Wilt blocked it 5 times in that one game

one more time - here they are - this one just jams - entitled - a brutal barrage of dunks

Whenever I see a pro athlete do something REALLY STUPID I find a superlative like ‘stupidest play ever’.

Last play in Patriots game now sits on that mantle. Congratulations, Jacobi Meyers!

I didn't watch more than a minute of each video (so don't know how "great they are") but I wonder if it will be in the next one of : these or these videos , ? ***

***: Probably won't be in this kind of clip , but I have been wrong before.
