Yeah, no. I don't see Mdawg doing that. 😐
Las Vegas hits 100 degrees for the first time in 2024; over a month earlier than in 2023
Friday (May 17th) was the first 100-degree day in Las Vegas, the National Weather Service confirmed.
South Lake Tahoe is the latest California city to consider a vacancy tax as a way to address a housing shortage. Oakland, San Francisco and Berkeley have approved similar initiatives; voters in Santa Cruz rejected one two years ago. Los Angeles considered a vacancy tax four years ago, but it went nowhere.
Argh, sez I.
There will be ways around it though if it passes.
Changes to a north Strip casino's loyalty program will take away unlimited free self parking for entry-level members. Resorts World also introduced a new tier between the entry level, Royal, and the next tier, Prime.
They've had the parking ticket machines and sawhorses in place since the beginning, but it just didn't seem like they had enough traffic to justify charging.
All guests may still park for free for up to three hours beginning June 3. Following the three hours, standard parking rates will apply at $18 per entry, while valet options are also available ranging from $25 to $75.

Amazing that these sorts of things still happen.
And this was a different crime, last week - amazing that this guy thought he could get away with it, coming and going to the robbery with a taxi.
Last week, sources told 8 News Now Investigators that a man took a taxi to Resorts World on the Las Vegas Strip, robbed the casino, and then left in the cab with an undisclosed amount of money on Nov. 10. No information about the robbery has been publicly released.
Now here's the thing about RW. Its main cage is located pretty centrally. A robber would need to go through quite a bit of casino just to get to an exit point. But they have a second high limit cage, right by the Crockford's high limit Baccarat salon. To get to that is just a quick walk through the Crockford's lobby, the salon and bam you're at the cage. Don't even have to go through the main casino to get to it. I would guess that whoever pulled off this RW robbery had his taxi wait for him at the Crockford's porte-cochere, went in, robbed the high limit cage, and back out within minutes.
It's interesting because when the casino opened, the RW VIP Opening party was held partly in that high limit salon, and at that time, over a year ago, my wife commented on how close the high limit cage was to the main entrance, and how that might invite would be criminals. I always thought it was bad logistics myself, looking at it from either a casino owner or real estate developer's point of view.
Similarly the guy who pulled off the craps table robbery at the Bellagio, went in and out through the North Entrance - much less casino through which to walk in and out.
This guy I assume tried the same M.O. but was less fortunate. Man trying to rob Bellagio Casino for 2nd time killed in police shootout We were looking down at the crime scene from a Vegas suite that very night, wondering what all the flashing LVMPD car lights meant.
But the distance even from the North Bellagio valet entrance to the nearest craps table or casino cage is still longer than the quick jaunt from the Crockford's valet entrance to the RW high limit cage.

They actually did catch the RW $6000. cage robber. Pretty quickly as he was already known to the police.
Suspect passed Resorts World cashier note that said 'fill the bag or I will shoot you,' arrest report says
Police: Zubaid Ibrahim Al Jarmi was on probation for similar robbery
I discussed this with someone higher up at RW right after this happened, who was laughing about how the guy got only $6K.
This Las Vegas golf attraction opened in March. Now it’s laid off workers
A recently opened Las Vegas entertainment attraction has announced layoffs just months after opening its doors.
Atomic Golf, a high-tech golfing range with 103 bays at The Strat, announced it has laid off a portion of its hundreds of staff. The layoffs have come quickly for the venue, which opened in late March.
April traditionally is a weak month for casinos, but they had the highest win ever for the month in 2024 despite an early Easter and the closure of the Tropicana.
At Wynn, they seem to cater to players first, business non gamers second. It is rare that a Wynn restaurant is closed for a private events - many of them are held at Tableau in the evenings, which Tableau is open for breakfast and brunch only anyway.

From DiceSetter.com https://dicesetter.com/mb_archive/tablesizes.htm
After close measurement of tables I have determined that most tables are either 12 feet or 14 feet in length. This dimension is the length measured from outside chip rail to outside chip rail. The length from rubber to rubber is about 10 inches less. 11'2" or 13'2".
I have never seen a sixteen foot table but have heard that they do exist.
I have seen an eight foot stand up table that only had one dealer on base and a stickman if it was busy. Ten footers are available from Gamblers General Store.
Casinos think that the larger table services more customers but IMHO a full 14 footer only gets 80-90 rolls per hour and a 12 footer gets about 100-110.
Biloxi's Imperial Palace has 16 foot tables ... so long that you almost have to throw overhand to get them to the wall . I'll only shoot there if I can get the 1st stick right spot
Mad Professor
Roadrunner,
Wait until you have to shoot on a 24-foot land-barge length table.
As Billy would say, "You can't see the other end of it because of the curvature of the earth."
By the way, they have one of those two-dealer 8-foot tables at The Boardwalk Casino in LV. They use a short stick and mini- dice. You can read about it in my "Master of All...Well...Slave to Some" article. They used to have one at the Wild West Casino beside the Orleans Hotel in LV, but I don't know if they still have it.
Roadrunner
I have played on the 8 foot table at Wild Wild West (west side of I-15 on Tropicana) in July of 2000 and again in August of 2001. In between those time they put up a sign that says "No dice setting No dice Banging". Tried to quick set a couple of times and the stick dealer called me on it. (See "The Black List" here on Irishsetter)
Heavy
A quick word on those mini-dice. The smaller the dice the more difficult it is to set and control the roll. Especially the control part. Seems that the smaller dice react more when they hit the rubber pyramids - and are easier to knock off axis. I am not sure if this is really a size or weight issue - but it IS an issue. Stick with casinos that used the full size 3/4 inch dice and you'll have better control.
Quote: MDawgThe casinos seem to think dice setting works. Never been accused of it at a regular class joint I am known at, but was accused of it once when I was winning a lot at Craps at the Four Queens in Vegas. I frankly had no idea what he was talking about at the time, but at a minimum the pit boss's crass "Stop setting the dice!" and jumping in my face disrupted

Caesars Entertainment shareholders solidly rejected a proposal to study the economic effects of smoke-free casinos, the last of three recent efforts to pursue the policy through publicly traded companies.
(Perceived) dollars before health unfortunately. Shareholders must think banning smoking will bite into business.
Might still be hope though.
Smoke-free casino advocates are seeking out different routes to close Clean Indoor Air Act loopholes that exempt casinos and bars in Nevada and other states. The corporate proposals come months after a court challenge with similar goals was filed in New Jersey in April. Also that month, a poll of Nevada voters, commissioned by the Nevada Tobacco Control and Smoke-free Coalition, found 58 percent said they would support banning smoking in casinos.
One thing I am interested in seeing, is whether the Cosmo system of declining to cover spa comps when on a winning trip (I have definitely run into that) will remain, versus the system at every other casino I play at, which is simply that you get what you have earned, whether via actual loss or theo loss.
As Cosmo's Identity rewards rolls into MGM rewards, they will double your Identity awards earned during the previous 12 month period, add (for me, who doesn't play slots), a tables games bonus, then add any direct MGM rewards tier credits, and then calculate your new MGM Rewards level. In the case of Noir, I don't think it is based just on points, but maybe some action from the host.
https://www.mgmresorts.com/en/mgm-rewards/tier-status-match-challenge.html
However, it lasts for only 90 days - not a full year like some other casinos' tier match programs - and you have to meet some "challenge" during those 90 days to retain the elevated status.
Want to extend your Gold or Platinum Status Match?
Once you’ve received your Status Match upgrade, you’re automatically enrolled in the Challenge. Complete the Challenge requirements to extend your Status Match through January 31, 2026.
Challenge requirements for Gold: Earn an additional 50,000 Tier Credits on certain eligible spend within 90 days of your Status Match.
Challenge requirements for Platinum: Earn an additional 150,000 Tier Credits on certain eligible spend within 90 days of your Status Match.
Also, you don't unlock all of the benefits of that matched tier, for example, not the tier celebration dining credit, air travel credit or complimentary cruise benefits.
No, you do not automatically receive these benefits by receiving a Status Match upgrade or successfully completing the Status Match Challenge. During the applicable Tier Status Earning Year, members must earn 75,000 Tier Credits to be eligible to receive the Gold Tier Celebration dining credit and 200,000 Tier Credits to be eligible to receive the Platinum Tier Celebration dining credit, air travel credit and complimentary cruise benefit.
Temps are nice though. Going to be staying at one of the casino resorts until after the 4th.
but without setting up anything special the way I have in Vegas, I'll be at the mercy of public tables and stated rules, which anyone who has played up here knows, are crappy compared to Vegas.
For example I remember that single deck blackjack which was 3:2 when I played before (maybe not even 3:2 any longer) allowed doubling on 10 and 11 only, I am sure it is the same still now.
Double deck used to allow doubling only on 8, 9, 10 and 11, which is bad enough, but friends of mine have told me that they eliminated the double on 8.
The shoe (used to be 6 deck in high limit, 8 outside) allows double on anything, but I don't know the current penetration or other exact rules.
They do have Baccarat but I might have to have it set up for me the way I do in Vegas unless it is already that way, and I wasn't planning on going through all that up here.

I am intrigued, but I'll limit my questions to "are those promo chips play once, or play until you lose?" and "are you limited in which games you can play with the promo chips?"
D9 is a pretty common rule. D8 seems awfully generous, but I don't recall many situations where doubling an 8 is encouraged by the math. D10 or D11 both just seem harsh to me.
In Tahoe, a double deck that allows a double on only 9, 10, 11 isn't very good, and wasn't even that great when it allowed double on 8.
As far as doubling 8 (or less) you’re missing consideration of ace plus.
Somehow I used to win a lot at single deck in Tahoe years ago but the rules were also better then.
The promo chips are all bet until you lose, and are allowed on any 1:1 payout play, so, for example, not on any Baccarat side bets including tie.
BTW the way you may tell - and even pit bosses don’t always know this and sometimes have to make phone calls to check - play until you lose either state specifically “play until you lose” (rare) or, say nothing.
But the one bet chips always have verbiage to that effect on them.

Sadly, all my favorite double deck games were closed during the pandemic, and the casinos have basically promised never to reopen them. They're running shoes only now.
I did stumble across a busy double deck table on travel back in May, but I was in no mood to play, and certainly no mood to wait for a spot.
Go ahead and finagle the best rules you can, but starting at D9 seems pretty standard for my recollection.
Quote: MDawgStandard double deck rules in Vegas allow double on any two cards. Caesars standard high limit DD does not allow double after split, but most DD at the other majors on the Strips, do. There is (or was) at least one casino that has all the great rules for DD, double after split, resplit aces, and stand on soft 17, but those rules may be all negotiated with a high enough credit line or deposit, along with certain other factors such as over all providing great value to the casino (figured over perhaps not just one player).
link to original post
so even without finagling, anyone should be able to find a double on anything double deck in Vegas, although minimums are going to be high if the double deck at that given casino is only in high limit.

How Dead & Company found new life at the Las Vegas Sphere
A year ago, they seemed poised to shake that habit: Having logged more than 200 gigs since 2015 — when the band came together in the wake of a public farewell by the Grateful Dead — Dead & Company wrapped up what was billed as its own final tour that July with three concerts at Oracle Park in San Francisco, where the Grateful Dead formed in the mid-1960s and quickly became an avatar of the city’s Haight-Ashbury counterculture. (The other members of Dead & Company are bassist Oteil Burbridge, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and drummer Jay Lane, the last of whom replaced Bill Kreutzmann, another Grateful Dead founder, after Kreutzmann left in 2023.)
Yet the prospect of Sphere’s visual splendor lured the group back onstage.
With a 160,000-square-foot screen said to be the highest-resolution in the world, the $2-billion venue opened to much fanfare last fall with an eye-popping show by U2 that put the veteran Irish band amid photo-realistic images of the Vegas desert in the pre-neon age; Phish followed U2 into Sphere in April, turning the building’s curved surface into an underwater lair and the soapy interior of a car wash.
Mayer reckons that the venue has “established overnight a new big league” of acts eager — and able — to take advantage of Sphere’s technical potential.
“I think what we all love is that there’s finally once again a live-music space race,” he says, dressed in tan cargo pants and a clingy black T-shirt. “There’s the social-media space race, the podcast space race, the AI [artificial intelligence] space race. But live music pretty much stayed the same for such a long time.”

Ultra-runner near the end of a 50-mile excursion attacked by a bear in Yosemite Valley
Jon-Kyle Mohr was less than a mile from the end of an epic adventure he’d been planning for years: a 50-mile run from his home in June Lake, over the towering Sierra Nevada, then down into the spectacular natural amphitheater of Yosemite Valley.
His long, hot, exhausting day was seconds from ending in triumph Sunday night when, out of the corner of his eye, he saw a huge black shape charging at him.
In an instant, he said, he felt “some sharpness” on his shoulder followed by a powerful shove that sent him stumbling in the dark. When he turned around, people about a hundred feet away were shining their headlamps in his direction and shouting, “Bear!”
And then, right in front of him, he saw the large, adult black bear. The collision had knocked a stolen bag of juicy-looking garbage from the animal’s mouth, and it didn’t seem happy. Before Mohr could fully process what was happening, “it was coming back at me,” he said.
Mohr, 33, started yelling and slapping his running poles on the pavement, he said, as people from a nearby campground came to his aid, shouting and banging pots and pans.
It worked. The bear disappeared into the darkness. Mohr’s clothes were torn, and he had a few scratches, but there was no more serious damage done.
Black bear sightings are common in Yosemite; hundreds of them live in the park. But attacks — or accidental collisions, as appears to have happened in this case — are rare. Mohr said one of the rangers who responded said he’d been in the park for decades and had never seen anything like it.
Bad things sometimes happen when people get too close to bears trying to take selfies, or when they surprise the animals rummaging in their cars or tents. But an unprovoked attack on someone walking down the road is almost unheard of, according to park officials.
