I wish there was a way to get hints on your Smarty Pants 6, Mike. I got four correct consecutive letters where they need to be on my second try, but can�t, for the life of me, think of another 6-letter word that has those exact letters in it.

Did you figure it out?

You can try every combination of two letters and surely you'll come across the answer. I'm often in this situation in Wordle.

Thanks. It was fun because I felt like I was swimming in the dark. I knew what my goal was (get out of the water)... but I had no idea how to get there.

I had no idea what word list was used (ENABLE? SOWPODS?) what words may have been removed (plurals? past tense?) etc. I also wasn't yet sure what was a good six letter starter word to use, so I just picked one at random that seemed okay. (Since then I figured out better starter words, based upon a new six-letter word frequency list I assembled.)

Did you see my follow up with more examples? The third one in that post answers your question. For double letters in guesses, a green gets precedence then the left letter gets precedence.

Yes, thanks. Hopefully my game is scoring correctly now. Please let me know if you find a mistake.

In other news, I'm happy to say Smarty Pants 6 now checks that guesses are valid words. I use a list of 2,500 words found here. This list does include plurals. I would take them out, but I don't want to fuss with doing it by hand.

If anyone else wants to suggest a better list, I'm all ears.

Well, it stumped me, but the scoring system did seem to work.

The L and D in those spots, and the A and S nowhere I had guessed didn't click. I'm going with Sunday puzzles are tougher as my pale excuse.

It's no problem to write a short little macro and remove them that way.

568 plurals were removed, bringing the number of words in this list down from 2,500 to 1,932.

I made sure to keep all words ending in S that are not plurals, such as ACROSS, CARESS, TENNIS, THESIS, etc. Note that I did not remove the 15 or so words that take an ES as a plural, such as BUSHES and DISHES and INCHES, etc.

This is correct. WordleBot gives a equal Skill Rating of 99 to a total of six different starting words. Four words each received a Skill Rating of 98 and eleven words are given a Skill Rating of 97.

For all practical purposes, the differences between any of these 21 words is so minor it can safely be ignored.

First of all, I enjoyed my first play of "Smarty Pants 6".
But, is there a way you can make it so that someone can play past games? (maybe like a drop down menu or something similar?)

Note 1: I am not a programmer, so I don't know how hard / time-consuming this is for such a "small change".

Note 2: I already tried changing the time in my PC, and that didn't work (like it does for Wordle).

I know that when I was playing around with Smarty Pants, I put in what I thought was a common word, and it wasn't on the list. Wish I could remember what it was.

Maybe I'll have to look for another list.

I'm thinking of taking Smarty Pants off the word of the day system. Maybe I'll randomize the word every game or have the player enter an integer that will get mapped to a particular word. That way people could play competitively, like comparing scores for, say, game #523. I am open to all suggestions, but keep in mind that Javascript is not my strong suit, so nothing too complicated.

I just updated Smarty Pants to have a list of 5,487 words, as opposed to the previous 1,933. The only words ending in S in my list are those in your list.

In case anyone asks me, what was your policy with present simple verbs? For example, I notice you didn't include DRIVES, but you do include DASHES? My best guess is if you dropped the S and it was on some five-letter list of words, you didn't allow it. Since DASHE isn't a word, it made the list. Am I correct?

By the way, my list ultimately came from here, of course only taking the six-letter words.

Like Wordle, you should have smarty pants accept many more words as valid guesses than could be answers. Would make your valid guess list broad, maybe try Snowpods list that Ed notes above.

The race is not always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong; but that is the way to bet.

I would definitely do that. Many words on the allowed list now I never heard of. One thing I like about Wordle is the actual solution words have all been in everyday usage, at least in the 50+ times I've played.

At the moment, I am thinking of culling about 100 good words and have the player pick a number that will get randomly matched to one of them for the solution. In the future, I'll either replace or add to that list.

I didn't do anything special with verbs.

Here's all that I did.

I obviously did not want to do anything manually. Too many words to do that. So I first started with ENABLE's list of words. I sorted the list by length and extracted from it all of the five-letter words. Then, I looped through your list of six-letter words ending in S. For each word in that list, I checked to see if the first five letters of that word matched a word in ENABLE'S list of five-letter words. If so, this five-letter word takes an S to form a plural.

So yes, you are correct. That's why DRIVES from your list is considered a plural, since my code found the word DRIVE, but DASHES, which is also a plural, made the list of non-plurals because there is no DASHE. So yes, only five-letter words that take an S at the end to form a plural, were removed. ARCHES and ARMIES and BABIES, etc, remained.

There is one problem, however. I forgot to consider the five-letter words that end in S that take an S at the end to form a six-letter word, that are NOT considered plurals. You should add these back in by hand. There are only five of them. ABBESS, ASSESS, CARESS, DURESS and MORASS. According to the ENABLE word list, ABBES, ASSES, CARES (of course), DURES and MORAS are all words. Yes when you add an S it makes a new word which is not a plural.

Thanks again, Ed. You've gone way beyond the call of duty already so I hate to ask more of you. However, if you ever want me to add back in some words, just give me a list.

In other news, I added the feature I mentioned earlier where the user enters a game number (1 to 100) and the game will match that to one of 100 pre-approved words by me. These were chosen to not be too obscure.

With that, I'm finally able to play the game legitimately myself as I didn't memorize the 100 words, let alone which one was assigned to which number. In playing it the first time, I find this a lot harder. Not having the list of letters I'm sure is part of it.
