Just for fun, earlier this week I created "SmartyBot." SmartyBot is a bot which analyzes and solves Smarty Pants 6 puzzles, unattended. (It's really just an Excel program with VBA macros... programming code... but programming code is exactly what every "bot" is anyway.)

It doesn't interact directly with Mike's Smarty Pants webpage, nor is it something you can interactive with online. It's just a Microsoft Excel workbook.

It doesn't even yet allow you to play a game against it. It doesn't, for example, select a random word and allow you to guess and provide the appropriate feedback for each guess, although that wouldn't be very hard at all to add. (Many years ago I coded a MasterMind program that did just that.)

Right now it's just an analysis tool that can solve puzzles unattended. As it solves each puzzle it keeps track of the puzzle, the clues it used and the feedback returned, the number of possible words remaining after each guess, the number of rows it took to solve the puzzle, etc.

I asked SmartyBot to solve the first 100 of the Smarty Pants 6 puzzles Mike put together. (I say "first 100" because I strongly suspect Mike might add more Smarty Pants puzzles in the future.)

The results, and more about the program, including a few screenshots, here:

I coded SmartyBot to use, if asked, a completely random starting word for each game, selected from the 5,487 word dataset.

Wow, as you might suspect, sometimes it gets really lucky when picking a random word!

Here are the results from three different puzzles (#29, #66 and #77) where SmartyBot's random word selected was so good... there was only one possible word remaining!

PEEPED ??? Seriously? A triple E and a double P? LOL. Talk about a poor started. And yet for this puzzle that turned out to be an ideal guess ... allowing the bot got it in two. Too funny.

Smarty Pants how has 214 solutions.

Thanks. I've updated my workbook to reflect this, for any future evaluations. (I suspect PARTED will no longer be the best word to use.)

I also noticed your list of valid guesses now contains 5,490 words in it. (Instead of 5,487.) I've made this update too.

214 seems like an odd number of solutions. Not 250? Not 300?

Hey Mike, I found an error with Smarty Pants.

The answer to Puzzle #112 is NOT listed in the list of 5,490 words. (For that reason, you can't solve #112... even if you know the answer!)

Let me know what you decide to do. (Either give Puzzle #112 a different answer or add that word to the word list, bringing it up to 5,491 words.)

I went ahead and looked... all other answers check out okay. This is the only oversight.

Thanks.

Thank you for bringing the puzzle #112 problem to my attention. I spent a fair bit of time trying to figure out why this happened and to solve the problem. I think it was a combination of two things. One was that the solution list was culled from a former list of words that included the word in question. However, when I went to the longer 5000+ list for guess words, which favors English English, that word didn't appear.

Please let me know if you encounter that problem again, which could happen, in theory.

Somehow, in trying to fix this problem, I lost some words in the guess list. That list is now 5,354 long.

To answer your question about the number of solutions, I randomly sort the list of of guess words. Then, from the top of the list, I select about half of them. In trying to pick 100 new ones, I overshot my goal and picked 114. So, I just threw all of them in there as solutions.

Thanks again for discovering that bug.

Your word was different because you played before the NY Times changed the word and replaced it. (Or you played it with a browser that didn't refresh the contents, which had the old word still in memory.)

Based upon recent current events, apparently the NY Times felt the original word would be "offensive" to some people. (Considering easily people get upset, I suspect this is true.) Not wanting to be a subject of controversy, they changed the word. It was originally going to be Wordle #2303.

I think it’s interesting that Wordle Bot has all the answers and knows what puzzle numbers will be. My kid plays the free unlimited Wordle and has Wordle not analyze his choices. Occasionally Wordle bot tells him he played Wordle #X that hasn’t yet happened yet.

Yea, I think that's neat too.

WordleBot obviously reads your cookies. Having just played a game, WordleBot will say, "It looks like you just played Puzzle #xxx!" which is true. The only way it can know that, is by reading my cookies. And having the ability to upload a graphic, and have WordleBot be able to analyze the pixels in that graphic, and know what game it's from, is neat too.

Of course, you can fool it by creating a graphic yourself, with Paint or Paint Shop Pro, if you want to have the bot analyze a particular position or puzzle that you really didn't play, but you're are interested in. I've already done that a lot of times.

Just to clarify, the answer I solved for was the original answer it pre-loaded, not the last-minute one it changed to. I did think it was odd the original word was “chosen” due to what is happening in politics right now, but now I see it was not intentional.

Hey Mike, I found another slight "error" with Smarty Pants. (Sorry.)

The answer to Puzzle #1 and Puzzle #2 is now the same word. Whoops. I'm sure that's not intended.

If you don't remember, you had this word...

madame

... initially, as your Puzzle #2 answer.

Also, I noticed your word list now contains 5,354 words. It used to be 5,490 words. If you are interested, I could figure out which 136 words are now absent. (It wouldn't take very long. I'd just write a short macro to compare the original list, which I still have a copy of, against the old list.)

First, thank you for catching the error with solution #1 and #2 being the same. No excuses, I messed up. Just fixed it.

Second, as long as it wouldn't take long, yes, by all means I'd like to know the lost 136 words.

Third, if you would like to submit your own solution words, by all means, I would be happy to add them. I just ask they be words the average person would know the meaning of and nothing slang, foreign, or there isn't unanimous agreement on the spelling. I would review the list for duplicates anyway and reserve the right to veto any of your suggestions.

Thanks again! What would I do without you?
