I'm going to use the other thread to make any other posts about my experience, good or bad. James deserves his own.

ok good. would hate to miss the losing show
Yes. That sums it up nicely.Quote: FinsRuleDifferent day, same result.
He won $90,000+ and made it look easy.
With his very first selection, at the beginning of the show, he just happened to select the Daily Double! He had no money at this point, of course, so he bet as much as was allowed... $1,000.00. ("The house maximum," he said.)
He now owns the top SIX single-day earning spots! (And the 9th spot.)
Roger Craig set a new one-day earnings record back in September of 2010, earning $77,000, surpassing a $75,000 one-day total that Ken Jennings had set back in July of 2004. So what that means is, since July of 2004, a span of almost 19 years, no one, other than Craig, has earned $70,000 or more.
And yet after just 13 games, Holzhauer has already surpassed that amount seven times!
Holzhauer: $131,127 04/17/2019
Holzhauer: $110,914 04/09/2019
Holzhauer: $106,181 04/16/2019
Holzhauer: $90,812 04/22/2019
Holzhauer: $89,158 04/12/2019
Holzhauer: $80,006 04/19/2019
Craig: $77,000 09/14/2010
Jennings: $75,000 07/23/2004
Holzhauer: $74,133 04/18/2019
The next big milestone for Holzhauer would be to break Julia Collins's mark of 20 consecutive wins. (She's second on the consecutive win list, behind Ken's 74 wins.)
For the past week I find myself making sure I've got all my errands done and that I'm home by 7:00 pm, when Jeopardy airs. Too funny.
*eisen hauer means iron hewer
*holz hauer means wood hewer
hewer is not commonly used now in English, definition seems to be a person who cuts or mines wood, stone, iron, etc

Quote: beachbumbabsMy biggest question about him is, what took him so long to get on Jeopardy? Full disclosure requires me to mention this.
In 2014, he won the Trivia Championship of North America, which is (to my knowledge) the top in-person competition/convention among the elites, including many Jeopardy champions. Alex the poker player goes to it, I think both Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter have competed, lots of others.
<snip>
I’m guessing it was Alex Trebek’s stage 4 pancreatic cancer announcement. Perhaps he was just waiting for the right time. Although, I don’t know if these were recorded before the announcement.
If his only goal in his whole life was to get on Jeopardy, he probably would have been on a little sooner.
There's a video (sorry if it's been mentioned before) of him on the chase from 2014 ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpkLLtvvijc ), so perhaps they waited a while or perhaps they get so many applicants that they just miss some. Another idea is that he was waiting until he was more confident with Jeopardy tactics (certainly googling Jeopardy seems to find lots of things worth knowing - e.g. https://thejeopardyfan.com/final-jeopardy-betting )Quote: Mooseton...[why he wasn't on earlier]...Perhaps he was just waiting for the right time...
Quote: FinsRuleI think the rating increases outweigh the budget issues.
I've thought about that. I don't pretend to know all the financial arrangements in play, but JEOPARDY is a syndicated show. It can't adjust the ad rates due to big ratings like WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE could when it was first a craze.
If the local stations are paying X dollars to run it for the year, that sum is already earned by the syndicator. Some of the ads that run look to be national ads, so I'm guessing the syndicator sells those ads and are included in the package that goes to the local stations. JEOPARDY may be able to raise their rates for those ads if that is the case.
I hope someone follows up on this; I don't know how much cooperation a reporter will get from the company, but it is a freaky situation that may not have been foreseen, at least to this extent.

Trivia time! What is the absolute maximum a player could win on one day?
Here are the unrealistic assumptions:
- The same player rings in first on every clue and gets every response correct.
- The Daily Doubles are in minimum value clues.
- The Daily Doubles are uncovered after all the dollar amounts.
- The player goes "all in" on each of the Daily Doubles and Final Jeopardy.
Quote: AyecarumbaThe prizes are actually only a small part of the production cost. I'm sure the producers will have no problem getting the money together when his run eventually ends.

Double Jeopardy -- 28 clues for $35,200 plus the $35,600 from the previous round = $70,800. Now multiply that by 4 (for the two DD's) for a total entering Final Jeopardy of $283,200
Final Jeopardy -- Double the total from the previous round for a grand total of $566,400.
One thing about the Daily Doubles is that the DD is almost never under the top clue in a category. It is most often found under the 4th clue down.
My question is, if you did have that total entering Final, would you bet it all? Realize that you will only be playing with by yourself as your opponents would have scores of $0.
ETA: Bah! Both Chester & Ed beat me to it!
But that is only $50,000 per episode (assuming 200 episodes per year). James is earning over $75k per episode!Quote: mcallister3200Yeah they are paying Trebek 10 million a year to read off a screen or cue card or whatever, their budget will be okay.

That video has been removed, but it isn’t hard to find another one. WOW. Worth the watch for trivia show lovers. Here’s where i found it: https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/bfwsl7/jeopardys_james_holzhauer_destroying_it_on_the/
btw I have to find the videos of the individual games as I'm not US based, so only look at games the following morning - again google seems to help.
This one has it from James' start. Not sure how the teammates figured into it.

Yeah...I can't see him hanging with the likes of us, but you never know, I guess.
One of his bio's said he got together with some 2+2 guys and made a trivia team a few years back. Not much overlap between our forums.

Quote:James Holzhauer’s wife Melissa Sassin Holzhauer is no stranger to game shows herself. Before he was a star on “Jeopardy,” Melissa was a contestant on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.” The couple was then living in Seattle, Washington, and during that game show appearance, it was James Holzhauer who was in the crowd rooting on his wife.
I kind of wonder how adept he is socially, he seems to have an unnatural smile , the kind where someone tells you that you need to smile and you have to look in a mirror to practice it, never quite making it natural.Quote: beachbumbabsYeah...I can't see him hanging with the likes of us, but you never know, I guess.

Quote: AyecarumbaI wonder how many shirts/jackets they ask you to bring to the taping? If you continue to win, and are on for multiple shows, do they supply you with new clothes?
That's actually an interesting question. I just automatically assumed they'd have a wardrobe department that would dress all the contestants for every show.

Why do you have to dis this guy like that? What has he ever done to you? Are you some GQ supermodel that has the right to criticize other people's looks? Im a straight guy, but I happen to think James is a cool, good looking, well mannered solid dude. Let's see your pic and we can judge your appearance.

For serious quizers have a look at some of the walls and see if you can get all four connections.

I suspect people are warming to James and can easily imagine him going on to being a great host, especially a quiz show.
Quote: charliepatrickIn the UK a former professional poker player has gone on to becoming a presenter of various programs - "Only Connect" is a difficult quiz show, especially the "Wall".

It's not out of the question that Alex Trebek and the producers are looking for just the right person to succeed him.

I'm rooting for him as a good representative of the noble profession to which all here presumably belong.
However, I like to say what I think on matters and that smile caught my attention. May not mean much. The dog thing bothers me, but I'm hoping he actually likes them but merely doesn't want to own one.
regarding the other matter, we do know what you look like, so refer to the above if you object to my observation that, well, don't ask why your shaving mirror keeps shattering.

His smile looks odd because he has an underbite. For someone his age it would take 2+ years of braces and major jaw surgery to change.
I think it’s cool that he’s not afraid to show it off. A lot of people would be too self conscious to smile as often as he does when they have one.

This is quite a claim. Tell me what I look like.
In case you're wondering, here's where the Daily Doubles are:

That is interesting. I am surprised that he doesnt do 1000, 600, then 800
What I think is odd is the column distribution. I can see putting the DD less often in the last column because if there is a 'wacky' category, it will be in the last column. But why no love for Column #2?Quote: renoPrior to this season, no one had ever wagered more than $19,000 on a Daily Double. Holzhauer has wagered $25,000 twice.
