Round 5 Results

Very good group. Given 36 votes, you maximized the most you could get out of me in one round. Had one $1 picker switched to $4 you would have all got zero...

Not exactly.

Any one of the non-bidders could have picked $4. In fact, two of them could have picked $4 if one of the others also picked $1.

At any rate, my bid is in.

So we can consider DJ's bid disclosed as $2

Then perhaps you shouldn't "promise" before the next round. Wouldn't it be better to just wait until it actually happens? What if you were the last person to pick and if you kept your promise we would get zero for sure? Would you still keep your promise?

You're assuming undisclosed people picked low?

I have declared that I have always picked Hi randomly with P=1/3 - I feel this is fairer than being one of the early ones just grabbing a Hi slot. btw I think it's better to assume the other unknown bids have a reasonable probability of picking Hi.

If I am the only one that's left undisclosed with (say) 30 having bid I'm willing to say which suit my five (the card I drew) was. I think the running tally concept is an excellent way to play the game. Naturally this still depends on trusting everyone else to have told the truth, or perhaps (i) the last few bidders have to go low and leave a few high slots spare just in case (ii) the last few bidders allow for (say) one liar but not two - hoping the liars will feel guilty next round!

I hereby declare that I'm not ever going to disclose my bid, as doing so obviates the central premise of the game--to measure the extent to which people will cooperate when it's unknown if or how likely they are to be penalized for failure to cooperate. Keeping track of the accumulated bids simply makes it the optimal strategy to wait until the last moment to submit one's bid, since at that point one should KNOW whether it's safe to defect or not (or at least, have a much better idea than earlier bidders).

You guys with all this "team" nonsense, as convoluted as it's gotten, seem to all have missed this simple concept. In any game theory exercise where people have incomplete information about the future actions/tendencies of others, those whose decide last have a tremendous advantage over those who go first, IF THE CHOICES PEOPLE MAKE ARE VISIBLE TO THOSE WHO CHOOSE IMMEDIATELY AFTER THEM. Imagine, for example, a Prisoner's Dilemma where Prisoner B had a hidden mike hooked up to Prisoner A's interrogation room (no dilemma at all!). You basically ruin the game by penalizing those who bid early and are honest about it.

Of course, this could degenerate into a lying contest, but it's supposed to be a cooperation game.

By my reckoning we have 39 players of which
10 have claimed to have bid high
10 have claimed to have bid low
4 have chosen to not disclose their bid
Some have not YET disclosed their bid
The last few bidders will have great power and great responsibility. Lets be a bit greedy but not TOO greedy.
Let's test this simple strategy regardless of our own way of playing.

Errors & Omissions Excepted
Please PLEASE Maintain the tally and keep it updated.
Do remember to bid on time.

My guess at least three people need to go from high to low to maintain the round not letting it fail. Might need more than three since a few have declared a low to high switch, but don't remember how many. Assume undisclosed means predominantly high.

Some in that list might already have been eliminated.

By my reckoning we have 39 players of which
10 have claimed to have bid high
10 have claimed to have bid low
4 have chosen to not disclose their bid
14 have not YET disclosed their bid

Total who could potentially bid high, based on the declarations = 29/39 : We are in dangerous territory!!!

Whilst I'll say GOOD JOB on the last round... Look how close it was. Really, we just got lucky. We didn't orchestrate that result, we just tried to get everyone to bid low and got REALLY LUCKY that we weren't 1 more person off. Now that not only did we win, but the money went back down, this puts us in further jeopardy of people going "Well hell it's not even $4 so I might as well pick $2."

Going up to $4 was not a thing Mike did on a whim, and neither is reducing back to $2. He's (within his right) trying to get us to fail! We need to have some padding and the understanding that 0 variance is better than "max EV" which I'll bet with anyone we do NOT get again.
Playing it correctly means you've already won.

If we can just pop in enough extra low bids, we can do significantly better than we did in round #1.

We cannot assume that the 'not yet disclosed' haven't already PM'd Mike with their high bids.

I still urge all who haven't declared their bids to do so now, whether they were high or low.
You can even say 'I have pm'd the Wizard, but I'm not disclosing' and that will be useful to us all.

Also, if you haven't placed your PM to Wizard yet, please do so ASAP. our lives are in your hands.

Ya know, this could have been easy. Do it the same as the perfect round 5, whatever you picked. Agree winnings will be evenly split. All done.

But, no. This guy's a holdout. That guy's a randomizer. The other guy's lying.

Herding cats on linoleum with no litter box in sight would be easier.

Good thing I don't need the money.

lol, and there lies the point of the game and what makes it interesting

The optimal solution is super simple, but it's a social experiment, not a math experiment.

  1. If 50% or more players choose $2, then everybody will win $0.

Guys,
We cannot afford to have 50%, let alone more than 50% bidding high.
I believe we may well have already blown it.

We have to consider that a selection of those who have not declared their bid, and may never do so, have already slipped in their high bid to Mike. They may well be too shy to reveal that now or ever.

We have 38 players. Let's generously assume that one fails to bid.
Gives us 37 bids on recent form.
We know that 10 have declared they will bid high.
We know that only 13 have declared they will bid low.
4 decided not to disclose.

It's possible that some who have declared have not yet actually placed their bid and may switch sides, in either direction.

It's also possible, nay likely, that some of the 11 who have not yet declared have already bid high, or are inclined to bid, high.

If among the 4 non-disclosers, plus the 11 non-declarers, we have 9 or more high bids, then we are screwed.

I fear we are screwed.
