Exactly.
We may be out, but at least we still have our arms. lol
Quote: MakingBookI'm pulling for TIMSPEED to steal this entire challenge. Well done!
Ha! He will not get by the next round. Notice that none of the previous round's stealers made it this round. One of them even foolishly attempted to try SPLIT this time and he got burned!
That said, I'm already formulating a second Golden Balls game. In the next game everybody will partipate the entire game. However, I will be more generous with the prize money if this game ends with me keeping my money.
So, to the players left, if you feel the other player will vote "steal" either way, keep in mind that the money will roll into another game if I get to keep it.
Final word to think about: Schadenfreude.
How far is it going to get chopped?
Or, in other words, is Round 4 the final round? (chop with like six people at least...)
Thank you

It is possible there will be an 11-player chop. However, it won't be equal shares. Assuming you split this round you will have a 50% team share going into the final round, if there is one. Let's say for example that both teams share this round, and the final round. Then you would have a 25% share of the $200, or $50.
I just wanted to know if it was a last man standing tourney or just split if everyone says so.
I'm calculating the EV of it...

Wiz,
While I can appreciate your wanting to keep your money, and to use it to make a bigger pot for another game, I feel that your $200 would be greatly appreciated by a charity of your choice. I am hoping to be part of the last man standing, and I would hope I could convince my teammates to all join me in requesting a donation to charity. While I would gladly take your $10, there are many charities that would put that money to much better use than I would.
With that nice Royal you hit the other day, another $200 charitable write off would not hurt you at tax time. :-D

Point well taken. I will indeed be more generous with the pool the next game, according to how much the winners choose to donate to charity. By the way, in light of Hurricane Sandy, I think the Red Cross would be a nice safe choice.

You have no reason to worry about that, because you will not advance.

Can I suggest the use of brackets to show equal shares (though in this case, all groups are equal shares) :
A + (B+C) would be 50/25/25 split.
(A + B + C + D) => 25/25/25/25 split.

TIMSPEED has left a trail of broken dreams in his quest for golden balls. I said it before, and will say it again, "FinsRule, I appreciate you and your team's sacrifice". Since your band has no choice but to steal or be stolen from by TIMSPEED, there is no reason for Raleigh's Charity workers and CrystalMath+avargov to risk a double knock out. Splitting for us is certainly the way to go. Know this for certain... If I am team captain, and TIMSPEED is part of the opposing team, I will vote to steal, even if it means we all get knocked out. It's cold, but it's justice. That being said, I wish you both luck. Splitting and hoping that CM+ag and Raleigh's Charity workers knock each other out is a fair strategy, especially since TIMSPEED will get half the prize as an individual share.
I've really enjoyed this contest, especially the banter. Thank you again Wizard for sponsoring it.

CrystalMath and Avargov will seize upon the advantage and steal again knowing that you are now more likely to share. Actually, this post is a really great sell to make them think that you are going to share and then for you to go for the last minute steal. I might break down your handle later, just for that.
In any event, I do not have direct control as I am not the team leader, but I will do my best to ensure that we do not share with TimSpeed.
TimSpeed has shown that he does not need to share, however, he obviously needs our team to share in order to advance. Given his questions about the EV of his portion of the game, it is clear that he wants to advance and collect rather than have the $200 added to the prize pool for the children next game.
TimSpeed needs us to share...
Interesting.
My theory is that TimSpeed will offer FinsRule half of whatever he (TimSpeed) wins in order to compel FinsRule to share. FinsRule would really have little reason to decline this offer because, if TimSpeed elects to steal, then we are gone anyhow. TimSpeed's proposition would be simple, "Half of what I may win, or a guaranteed nothing." Furthermore, even if TimSpeed did share with our team, then each Member of our team would be talking $40, Max, whereas TimSpeed can win up to the full $200 flying it alone which would result in $100 for FinsRule.
It's your honor and your choice, FinsRule, but if you are going to be an honorable man, you must steal from TimSpeed. TimSpeed, you can compensate for your earlier transgressions against you fellow man...knowing we are going to steal...by advancing us and choosing to share. It's up to you guys.
FinsRule, if TimSpeed does make that offer...of thirty pieces of silver....
Will you really hang your team on this Cross of Golden Balls?
Quote: WizardDon't share with the bear.
Holy crap!
I'm out, and I'm still getting shit... but this time from Mike ?!?!?
For the record, yes, I had planned on stealing again. But I would have first made an offer to my opposing captain, similar to what Mission is suggesting that TimSpeed make to FinsRule.
I played the game much as someone on TV's Survivor might play. Do whatever's necessary to win.
Keep in mind that I am also a poker player. This game is very much like a poker game where you play the man and not the cards. A well played bluff is admired. A weak bluff is ridiculed. Unfortunately, my bluff was weak and I've been paying the price.
In Mission's What's in a name? post, he made some interesting comments about the DJ industry as well as my name.
Yeah, there are a lot of shady characters in the DJ industry. As I mention in sales meetings, most of them don't use contracts and insist on being paid in full weeks before the event. Many will send substitutes. Some will cancel at last minute or simply be a no-show (good luck getting a refund!). Few offer guarantees. If you're interested, check out my Admin note: removed link to www.djteddybear.com/contract.pdfcontract pdf. I specifically address payment is due at the end of the event (paragraph 2), I offer free overtime (paragraph 4), discount if I need to send substitute entertainer (paragraph 11), cancellation policy (paragraphs 11 & 12), and satisfaction guarantee (paragraph 16).
Regarding my name. I've actually been using my real name in my business for the last few years, but, for whatever reason, I used DJTeddyBear when signing up here. I HAVE asked Mike about changing it. His answer was that there's no way other than to abandon the user name and create a new user name (i.e. Losing my top-poster status, etc). I decided not to do that not so much because of the status, but so that there'd be a connection between my old posts and new posts. For the same reason, I used DJTeddyBear at DT.
When I started out as a DJ, I went by "DJ Dave". The name didn't have any pazazz, and I was considering DJ Teddy Bear, since I do tend to give the girls bear hugs. Then a girl at a bar where I was working said "Dave, you're such a Teddy Bear." The following week, I was auditioning at an oldies club. I introduced myself as DJ Teddy Bear and started my set with Elvis Presley's "Let Me Be Your Teddy Bear." I got that gig (6 nights per week for 3 years) and the rest is history. That was in 1986. In 2010, I met Mike for the first time, and gave him a bear hug too. I think I freaked him out momentarily.
Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Good luck to the remaining contestants in the Golden Balls contest. You're gonna need it!
Steal, unless someone gives me a compelling reason to split. I have not yet received one from TimSpeed...
I will take any input from my team members as well.

Quote: WizardPoint well taken. I will indeed be more generous with the pool the next game, according to how much the winners choose to donate to charity. By the way, in light of Hurricane Sandy, I think the Red Cross would be a nice safe choice.
I don't think you took it that way, but just in case, I did not mean to imply you were not generous with the current game. As entertaining as this thread has been, I'm not sure it is worth $200.
I do wish my suggestion to add the FED option would have been implemented, to have a counter option to thwart the Steal, but I also understand that would fundamentally change the game. It would bring in a bit more strategy though.
In any event, I believe your desire to have the final teams all try to Steal, and you get to keep your $200 is not a likely outcome, and it all comes down to your random draw of captains. Not sure how you did it, but lady luck did not smile on you.
Based on other posts, it appears that FinsRule team is willing to fall on the sword to prevent TimSpeed from being a major winner.
I have stated from the opening post that I am only playing to see money go to charity (and the Red Cross would be an excellent choice). I have indicated from the start I am SPLITTING all the way. So by drawing me as a team captain, you have guaranteed that a double elimination from both remaining matches cannot happen.
CrystalMath is an honorable man, and I am sure will settle for taking $50 while knowing that my $25 just went to the Red Cross. In addition, I would hope my teammates will also feel compelled to donate their $25 to charity as well.
CrystalMath's other choice is to Steal, which nets him $100, instead of $50, and I would hope, a shitload of guilt for having taken $25 to $100 away from the Red Cross. It may be the +EV play, but karma can be a bitch.
Quote: TIMSPEEDWell then,
Congratulations CrystalMath & avargov, you have both won $50.
I hope they lose. I gave them my word, put my trust in them, and they screwed me. I hope they get screwed too.

Regardless, your only real option here is to STEAL. The best that Tim can hope for is that you somehow bribe him to choose SPLIT. In any case you are still picking STEAL and it would be foolish to be tricked into doing anything otherwise - like my team did.

One can hope, but there is no reason for either of us in the other leg, to risk double elimination when it is clear that TIMSPEED is the new DJTB.
Ok, well not too wealthy.

I think any strategy that involves stealing early in the tournament is not wise. The most important thing you can do is try to minimize the chances that your opponent steals, as your opponent controls your destiny. I considered stealing in the first round but decided not to, mostly because I would just feel bad. But once we faced you I absolutely did not feel bad about stealing. As soon as you posted the the thing about "Oh, I didn't understand the way the team thing works..." I knew you were preparing to steal again. It actually made it a bit easier because now we could steal. If you stole also, well at least we blocked you from advancing when you betrayed us. I was really hoping you would split. I could steal from you, advance, and justify my steal to a future opponent.
For the record, I really didn't understand it until that point.Quote: bigfoot66As soon as you posted the the thing about "Oh, I didn't understand the way the team thing works..."
But I understand your own motives as well.
1. $100.
2. $200, if this game ends with mutual stealing.
3. The amount of any winnings donated to charity.
I am also seeking a volunteer to collect share/steal submissions, and report back to me with the list. This will earn 500 karma points.

If I should be so fortunate as to finish in the money this time (which seems quite likely), I will be happy to be the collector/reporter in the next iteration.

I am weary of this game in my old age. I have been nothing but honest and have paid the ultimate price with a bad draw. I also feel that I may unjustly have been influencing the decisions of other teams because I am such a good salesman and cannot keep my mouth closed.
For these and other reasons, I volunteer to manage the game next time around.
There will be color-commentary after each round of decisions, though, but I will do my best to keep it neutral.
