Michigan is so boring it's been a major vacation destination since the end of the Civil War. Tourism is a main source of Michigan income because it's so boring. Just one example. My wife and her sisters are from Michigan yet every year they stay for three nights and 4 days on Mackinac Island at the Grand Hotel. They love it they look forward to it, because it's so boring. There are so many tourist destinations in Michigan it takes a small book to list all of them. Do you want boring? Drive thru Iowa and Kansas one day.

On the average summer day thousands of people visit Mackinac Island via ferry, because a boat is the only way to get there. No cars allowed on the island, horse-drawn vehicles only. 2nd image is the Grand Hotel built in the late eighteen hundreds. It's spectacular and worth a trip to the island just to see it and go through it. It has the longest front porch of any building in the world, 660 feet. Six hundred horses work on the island. There are fifteen hundred bicycles. 70 miles of bike trails. 15 fudge shops. The first time you visit the history and the quaintness will knock your socks off. More than 15,000 people a day take the 20 minute ferry rides to the island. The ferry ride itself is kind of exciting because the water is always choppy, it's always chilly, the wind is always blowing, and it feels dangerous even though it's not.

Dude, I've been to those places, and they're boring. 15 fudge shops. Wow! Your post just confirms my point that some Michiganders have a totally twisted sense of what's interesting.

I have to agree withUP84 Iv'e been to Michigan Machinah Island too I haven't been back I have been back to Floridas beaches though...

Why would you go back, it's not an amusement park. Most places I visit I never go back, why would I. If you think Florida beaches are exciting, we have two different definitions of boring. Never been to a beach in my life but didn't bore me to tears after about 3 and 1/2 minutes. Getting baked by the sun amid the stink of sun tan lotion is not my idea of a good time.

It's all relative. In the mid-80s, I was one of a dozen or so managers at Jack Penrods Beach Club. I couldn't believe I was getting paid for being in the middle of Spring Break. Today you couldn't pay me to be anywhere near it.

Evenbob hates the sun/sunlight, what a surprise. Candle light is much better I suppose.

Nah, I suspect he still thinks fondly of his days tending bar, stale pretzels barely illuminated by a flickering "Bud" sign, his regular customers saying the same stuff over and over.

Something to be said for regularity, let alone mediocrity.

That's easy. Staying home is what I like to do. I hate traveling and I don't mean just hate, I loathe. it. Inconvenience of getting there, having to sleep poorly in a bed that's not mine. Having to eat food that's usually under seasoned and overcooked. Dealing with complete strangers. The whole thing is exhausting and for what. The whole time I'm gone I only want to be at home. If you live in a place you really like, where you're really comfortable, why would you want to leave. Mark Twain felt the same way about traveling. He hated everything about it, it was one inconvenience after another. He loved being in his own bed so much he usually had the maid serving breakfast and he would stay in bed till noon writing letters or writing articles. He was forced to travel to Europe for months at a time in his later years because he made stupid Investments and he needed the money he got from speaking tours. He hated every minute of it and and longed to be home.

I felt this way even as a kid, I never liked it when we took trips. The anticipation of it was the best part the actual trip itself was always tedious and the destination was always a disappointment. It was never what I thought it was going to be. It was either too hot or too crowded or too boring. And it only got worse as I got older. I think what it is, most people are easily entertained and easily satisfied. They will settle for almost anything and I will not. Cruise ships for example. I know without ever going on a cruise that it would bore me to tears. People even say when they get home that all there was to do to do was eat. I can stay home and do that and eat way better food.

The smell of Hawaiian Tropic suntan oil is one of my favorite smells as it reminds me of a youthful carefree summer vacation having fun at the lake, river, water park, beach, and all the hot girls in bikinis.

Great, slather it on in your living room have a wonderful time and you don't have to go anywhere to do it

I did go to Disney World one time in the 80s. Did not go on a single ride because I refuse to wait in line longer than five or six minutes. Those idiots were standing in the sun waiting in line for God knows how long. I went and drank beer until everybody was ready to leave. Believe me you do not want me around on a trip, I'm the original Debbie Downer. My wife was always bugging me to go somewhere and the whole way there she would recline her seat and sleep. So of course she had a good time, and I'm exhausted from driving for the last four and a half hours. Can't let her drive, she scares the crap out of me because she treats a car like it is a rolling weapon.
