EU is one big tourist trap in the summer.
The last time I was there was late 90's
and it was god awful, I can't imagine
now. A friend posted pics of Paris
this week of the highlights and he
was upset over the huge lines and
every pic is crammed with crowds and
crowds of pic snapping tourists and
hordes of Japanese. In England it's
a joke, it's like Disney World on a
Saturday in March.

EvenBob, you point to something that has nothing to do with the original mention of Europe.. You speak of tourism. What you say is true, but the same is true everywhere in the world, USA included.

The original poster talked about *moving to Europe*. Believe me, even we Europeans don’t waste our time in tourist spots. Living in Europe is a completely different experience.
The housing. The public service: health, transport,... The people. The products on sale. Whatever. All things you did not experience as a tourist.

But I do dislike movie theaters,
restaurants, waiting in line

it's always majorly inconvenient,
TV shows with commercials,

things.

Ok, so how do you keep those past opening? I LOVE anchovies on pizza and various other tomato/mozzarella dishes. Right up there with capers on cream cheese.

My best guess would be to move them into a glass jar and keep refrigerated. I would hope to get a couple months out of them that way. But they're too rich to use more than an ounce or two at a time.

I put them in a used glass pickle
jar and keep in the fridge. Use
the oil in the can and some fresh
oil. You can tell real olive oil from
mixed, the real oil will get opaque
and thick when it's cold. Amazon
sells 2 14oz cans for $15, the best
deal around. That's just over 50
cents an once.

They're good in salads, on sandwiches,
on burgers, in scrambled eggs, on
baked potatoes, which I never eat
anymore.

Oh my God I'm turning into EvenBob. I too hate many of the things you mentioned. And I also like the prices, selection and one stop shopping they have at Walmart. There are many things I hate about Walmart, yet I find myself shopping there most of the time. I went to Target the other day I almost forgot what a completely different environment that is there compared to Walmart. The problem is... they didn't have what I wanted, but they did at Walmart.

But somebody please put me out of my misery if I start eating fish from a can.

I mean, how hard is it to screw up fish? Add a few spices if you want, cook it, and boom. Done. I could probably count on one or two fingers the number of times in my life I've had a "bad" fish dish. Same goes for pizza.

I will never understand how people buy clothes and shoes online. How do you know if it fits??? A medium from one brand will be different from a medium from another brand. A size 10 shoe might be a size 8 1/2 in another style.

Guys like Bob have probably been buying the same pair of shoes and shirts for the last 30 years.

Either way, most of the time you can send it back if it doesn't fit. I started ordering some shirts and jackets from online. I have over 25 different coats and jackets. And yes, I live in Las Vegas 🤷‍♂️. I have one motorcycle jacket another brown leather jacket I've held onto for over 2O years( If you knew me, you would understand how amazing that actually is).

I've been buying pallets of Amazon returns for a bit from the North Vegas return center. 99% of the clothes and shoes are perfect, about 75% of the other stuff is fine. Someone buys a $300 jacket, decides they don't like the color, returns it and it goes for a penny or two on the dollar. Its rare that lots bring more than 10-15% of the original cost.

Wow, I always assumed they re-packaged it and sold it as new.

Ever since I learned how frequently some people return clothes and stuff, I've always wondered how much it drives up the cost. It seems like it should be a lot, but if that were true, you'd think more companies would have strict return policies and low prices.

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with canned food. It's looked down on more because it is cheaper. And, in many cases, I think it is lower quality because that is the demo they are going for. But it can be high quality. Like, if you made a really good soup and canned it, I think it would still be really good. Though I am not aware of any really good canned soups.

It's just a storage technique, nothing more. Same with frozen. I was kind of surprised when a fisherman told me he often prefers frozen sea food to food that has been shipped a decent distance.

We can food to preserve it, not to
store it. Canning is probably the
greatest invention for making food
last that we've ever had, it changed
the world. Refridgeration and freezing
is next. Most canned food that goes
bad is improperly canned at home.

Most seafood is canned at sea now,

I have had a pair of dress shoes by Steve Madden that I loved. After a while when they were beat up I decided to use them as my hospital/OR shoes. They haven't left the hospital for around the last 8 years. They are literally falling apart, and made a 'clip clop' sound when I walked in them. I became known for those shoes and clip clop sound.

On Friday, I am treating all the OR/PACU?Administrative staff I have worked with to a local bar party. At the party I will be burning those shoes. (They have an outdoor firepit).

It's just a storage technique, nothing more. Same with frozen. I was kind of surprised when a fisherman told me he often prefers frozen sea food to food that has been shipped a decent distance.

I've home canned since the 70's. Never had a problem. Home canners always check the lids to make sure they are sealed before they open them.

I also worked at Del Monte on the vegetable processing lines in my youth. From my experience, home canning is a much better product. Cannery workers, and I've known plenty, really don't care that much. I've seen rats in the line, all kinds of contaminants, that would never get past someone doing it for themselves at home.

Some fish lasts better canned and some is fine frozen. Same way with meat. What actually goes bad [and hence the expiration date] is the fat. Fat continues to break down/spoil, even when frozen. https://www.foodsafety.gov/food-safety-charts/cold-food-storage-charts

But living a remote lifestyle, I've frozen venison for 2 years and it was plenty edible. You can smell when it starts going bad. That venison though, was home processed, and higher quality meat then store bought.

On fish, the fatty fish like Chinook/king salmon, Herring and so forth, the taste starts decaying after about 3 weeks imo. If you freeze fish that has relatively little fat like sockeye salmon or Halibut, they freeze really well and last close to a year [home vacuum sealed] frozen. The commercial cannery's have it over the home processor on flash freezing though. They blast freeze, often at sea, and have a process that they claim will keep lean fish for two years.

So lean fish/meat freeze well, and better than fatty meat or fish. But fatty fish or meat cans for a decade [home processed], although all the professionals will say it goes bad much sooner. Most of the home canners I have known keep their home canned fish and meat until the the lids start to rust. ymmv

Also the flavor of oily fish changes when it's canned. Canned King salmon has a different flavor then fresh and definitely different than frozen. I've eaten tons of it, the flavor is so different it's almost like a different fish. I think I often prefer it canned over other methods of preparing. Much like Bob mentioned about Anthony Bourdain's experience.

The native kids are all taught to render seal oil and then dip frozen salmon pieces in it to eat. If they didn't dip the frozen fish meat into the seal oil, they would actually lose calories eating the salmon.

I also worked at Del Monte on the vegetable processing lines in my youth. From my experience, home canning is a much better product. Cannery workers, and I've known plenty, really don't care that much. I've seen rats in the line, all kinds of contaminants,

Things have changed drastically since
then. I worked in a cookie factory in
the early 70's. I worked in the filling
room, making the creamy filling that
went in the cookies. We'd drop stuff
on the floor and throw it in the mixture.
We'd smoke while working and the
ashes would fall into the mix. No hats

I drove a truck for a while during a recession
the company didn't maintain the trucks - they waited until they broke down before they did anything
the brakes on my truck kept getting worse and worse - I told them about it but they wouldn't do anything
then one day I started to go out and I had no brakes at all - that's when they decided to fix the brakes

one day the gas tank fell off the truck - the mechanic came out and re-attached the gas tank with coat hangers

the mechanic didn't have a house or apartment - he slept in the warehouse at night

the trucks had to leave very, very early in the morning - he often came out to work on my truck in his pajamas and slippers

Max, and Axel.

Your point, while well taken, has transitioned from a single point into a mudslide, where a spamming multiple threads, and trolling, complaint would be legitimate. The decision has been made to allow MBJ to promote his activities here; time to drop it. I'm sure Boz appreciated you guys picking up the baton I asked him to put down, but let's move on. Warning.

How can a person get banned for linking a site that has relevant info to the topic being discussed? That's definitely not trolling. It is the backbone of a discussion forum. Is MBJ, the world's greatest mover on a bicycle, the new DJT?

How can a person get banned for . ... .... ......?

I think its by transitioning from a post to a ton of posts in multiple threads so that what might be clever and relevant the first time degenerates into constant yammering.

As to fish... all those youtube and patreon yachting blogs feature fish being consumed within twelve hours. Frozen or canned fish in Alaska has been taking place for eons but smoking seems to be a commonly used process. Canned tuna is popular with food bank people though I rarely know what to do with it.

Two slices of whole wheat bread raises blood sugar more than a candy bar. Wheat converts to blood sugar more efficiently than just about any other carbohydrate including straight up table sugar.

I never said or even insinuated I had a problem with him promoting his website here, I'm all for it. I appreciate and respect the fact that they are willing to help a brother out who's competing with them on a small scale.

I was only making fun of the content, I mean come on, eating discarded room service food Casino hallways. Imagine eating a hot dog that either Rome's or PokerGrinder left outside their room. God only knows where that hot dog once was. I'm sorry, but that's not fancy brown mustard on that thing.
