A very short sighted opinion.

The fire department I’m with is in a smallish suburban area. We see an actual working structure fire about every 2-3 weeks.

What do you suggest we do when there is a fire? Just let it burn itself out? What about fires in multi-unit dwellings? Just let the entire block burn down?

During the winter, chimney fires are almost a daily occurance. Same with brush fires in the summer.

You are correct that actual fully involved house fires are a small percentage of our calls. Most of our calls are rescue and EMS. Car accidents requiring rescue and cardiac arrests are a daily occurrence for us. Do you want to phase those services out too?

No, I have no issue with emergency medical calls and such. In my town, you get a bill after the EMTs show up.

Different localities have different issues. So California and the west have forest fires- I got it. I live in East Tennessee and we get 25 inches of rain annually and there are lakes and rivers everywhere. Forest fires are very rare and always on federal land. That's not a reason why a town should have a fire department.

I am just advocating that we re-think our services and restructure them. House structure fires are becoming less common every year -should we go on having a standing salaried fire department 24/7 in areas where its really not needed? So that firefighters are paid to sleep or sit around and shine their equipment 90% of the time?

Emergency medical services are needed but maybe should be integrated into other health care institutions and paid for as a health care expense.

We have city police, county police, university police forces, state highway patrol, etc. (And that's not mentioning federal law enforcement organizations and TSA, etc.) When something happens the first thing everyone needs to do is stop and figure out which police force has jurisdictional authority. It's kind of ridiculous. And kind of expensive.
So many better men, a few of them friends, are dead. And a thousand thousand slimy things live on, and so do I.

For people who live in areas without fire protection, what's your insurance run?
I can't picture not having fire department. Nor living in a town that lacked one.

Crazy times.

One of my wife's brothers had a built Chevy that he'd take to Woodland and drive like a maniac til the cops started chasing him.

Then he'd head toward Amboy on Co. Rd. 16, outracing and ultimately losing his pursuers.

Back in the day there were two county road deputies for that area, Harvey and John.

If you knew them it was damned near a "get out of jail for free" card.

yeah so I have been bald since my 20s. Why is it that people have no problem commenting about someones lack of hair? It makes me want to punch you right in the face. If I had a stutter would you find it acceptable to comment on it. If I had a cleff pallet would that be ok? How about calling me fat too?

I went to an office today to meet with my business partner's office manager. I run their billing and had some things to go over. Their front desk person quit a few weeks ago and today they had a new one starting. I walk into the office and introduce myself. She is a lady in her 50s or 60's. I ask her how her day is going and her response. "It has been a rough day, there is a lot to learn. I may end up like you at the end of the day." Then she says something like, I mean I won't have any hair left. My response. "who the f$%# do you think you are that you can comment on someones appearance and good luck keeping your job after idiotic comments like this."

It would make me less angry if you call me fat since that is something that I technically have caused myself. Having no hair, totally out of control. That would have been like me calling her an old ugly bat at the end of my f you.

I mean I would prefer to have hair but I really don't care about it. I wear a hat a good bit and sometimes people will ask if I wear a hat because I am bald. My response is usually, no I wear a hat because f'ers like you have to make comments about it.

Yeah, it's rude for her to comment on your baldness. You're not wrong. I think you know you overreacted a bit. The trick now will be to keep it from escalating, because if she's that big an idiot she may complain about your language (a standard defensive move, especially by offensive people) and cost you a client. Two wrongs and all that.

it would be terrible for it to cost me a client since the client is my business partner. ;-)

Yes it was definitely an overreaction by me. I am generally not the type of person to lash out but the way she said it was so irritating. I came in with a great attitude, politely asked her how her day was going and she comes back with that.

The office manager (whom I have a great relationship) heard the exchange and was rather annoyed by her brand new employee. BTW, there were no patients in the office at the time or I would have never said anything.

Normally I shave my head but now completely with a razor. I use a shaver so it is very low. I haven't done this in about a week so right now I have some around the side. Definitely no comb over.

You've been mostly bald for years and you still can't handle what was probably an innocent remark. That is bad.
My hair started thinning early. I shaved it for Avanced camp in college and sadly much of it never grew back. That sucked, but I've long since gotten over it. I strongly suggest you find a way to do the same. Getting that upset is not normal or healthy.

my point is though, why do people think it is ok to make fun of a genetic issue? If I was 3 foot 9 would it be ok for her to comment on how short I was? what if I was born without an arm. Would making fun of that be ok?

I think it’s just the way things are with men’s hair, maybe some of it has to do with the fact that many bald/balding men openly joke about the issue. Or the fact that being bald is not really a sign of or cause of other more serious health issues (like being overweight is).

Most people would feel just as comfortable joking about someone else’s bad haircut.

Wait. Are you not supposed to make fun of a woman's age?

To answer your question I think it's just an extension of normal male ball busting. Men just bag on each other and it is just accepted that you can tease us.

It actually is pretty acceptable to make a little joke about a guys weight. Maybe unless he is hundreds of pounds over weight or whatever.

As a rule, you stay away from subjects which are truly sensitive, like a cleft pallet or Axel's obsession with Thai sex tourism.

Most people don't put baldness in that category.

I guess my question though is why? As I think about it I think the cleff one is a bad example because that actually does have some serious health problems behind it. Maybe someone with a short leg. I would bag on them because they walk with a limp.
So my question, why is it generally accepted as ok? I think it bothers more men than they say it does. Men are just a pain in the ass and won't say anything about it, because we know men suck and if you say something they will probably bring it up more.

One thing that I have noticed over the year is that it is usually someone that you just met, or don't kknow well that says something. I can think of multiple people that I have known for years that have never said a word. and then I can think of a dozen people that have mentioned it on the first or second meeting. Do people think it is a good ice breaker, and we think it is funny too?

Might I suggest you stop thinking baldness is some sort of handicap. Being able to comb our hair with a towel gives us extra time to enjoy life. We can remove our hats at a ball game without worrying about hat hair.

My opinion is that you are hyper-sensitive about you baldness. I don't think mentioning that someone is bald should be considered a negative in this day and age. I find it equivalent to someone saying that "I am so stressed out that my hair will probably turn gray like yours." I don't see anything negative about it. It is just a comment about appearance that the person has no control over.

I would agree that calling someone fat has some implied negative connotations but I don't think those are implied when commenting on baldness.
At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.

There's a saying among women that bald men make better lovers because they must've worn it off under the sheets.

It's still rude for her to comment on it. There are enough men unhappy about it that there's a multi-billion dollar industry just in late-night bald cure infomercials.

There's also cancer treatment, alopecia, and other medical reasons for baldness.

I don't doubt she meant it as a bonding comment. She failed.

Is your pay affected by a non-paying patient?
If you happened to do nothing but dead.beat non insured people one day, do you not get paid for the day? I'd like to get hospitals and doctors out of the medical billing and collections business and have them focus on actually providing medicine. Crazy, right?

Up until 5 years ago, yes. My group would bill each patient and then we would quarterly divide up what was left after expenses. Since my hospital has a disproportionate amount of deadbeats and low pay (Medicaid) patients we were subsidized by the hospital with a low salary and benefits. If you added up what we collected and the subsidy we made around the same as the private groups in town. So, yes, if a patient didn't pay technically I made less. But it was sort of figured in to our subsidy to even us out with the private groups. So let's say for my 250 days of actual work I am paid $500k, there technically would be some days I made $3k, while others $1k.
Now I am just a full time hospital employee on a defined salary. I know exactly what my check will be. So all I do now is what you ask.... 'provide medicine'.

They only ways I recall hearing these stories is either a debt is pursued only to find out the debtor is 5yrs old, or an early 20something goes to start their life and is old they're already f#$%ed. In other words, I only hear about this stuff when it goes wrong.

So, my question... what's to stop a fella from opening mad credit in their child's name for the purpose of sending them off into adulthood with a solid 760?

I already did that except it is not in their name I have both of my kids on as authorized users on 3 credit cards. It gives them credit history and when I go bad I can remove them do they see no damage. Authorized users are not counted when it comes to houses or cars but to boost the score it does.

Nothing... in fact, I recently read a story about this. The parents were illegal immigrants, but the kid was legal. They opened accounts in the kids' name so they could do everything on the books, but since they were illegal and didn't want to get caught, they were immaculate in their responsibility so as not to arouse suspicion. The kid turns 18 and finds out he has like an 800 credit score. His only problem was, now that he was an adult, he wanted to get all of his parents' stuff out of his name without getting them in trouble. I'm not sure how the story turned out.

Is Hulu even any good nowadays?

I watched it some back when it was free, and it was pretty crap back then, even by free streaming standards.

I dont have anything to compare it too. I just found out one thing that kinda annoys me though. There are tons of options to watch. We were pretty excited for a short time and thought it would definitely replace TV. You can add things to a favorites list and it tell you when there is a new episode so it works pretty much like a DVR. Howeverrrrrr.. We were adding our shows to the list and I realized that I was missing seal team, then criminal minds, FBI, and a few others. I did a search and found out to get a few shows you have to subscribe to their live TV for $40 a month. Those shows can just be watched on an antenna but we rely on DVR right now because we generally only watch TV when the kids go to bed and we are relaxing for the evening. With those being on the expensive plan I would have to figure out a convenient way to watch them.

That is very possible. If I were to bet, I would bet that her husband is bald and she meant no ill will. I will be in that office on Friday and I will apologize for lashing back at her. That is not like my character

I wanted to put an update to this. I went on Friday and intended to appologize. She had called off on the Friday. I was in the office yesterday and figured that I could as well. The office manager told me that she fired her on Monday because she told a patient, "you're here just in time, you definitely need to see the plastic surgeon." Owell I will just move on with life.

I meant to post this earlier. In 1980 or so, my girlfriends Uncle Dick had a t-shirt that said "God made only a few great minds, All the rest he put hair on!" He wore it all the time. He also was about 5'4".

I'm a leg amputee and anytime someone looks at me like I'm a freak of nature I'll say "What are you staring at? You two legged FREAK! The reactions are priceless.

Lol that is funny. I dread the day my 4 or 6 year old makes a comment in front of someone like why is he bald, or where did his leg go, or why is she fat, or why is he black.

Kids are the best because of their curiosity. If they ask me directly or ask their parents about "where is my leg?". I tell them I lost it in an accident and now I am now part Robot Man. The kids love it and their parents can't help but smile.

I try to turn everything into a laughable situation all the time. But that's just me. I've always enjoyed making people laugh.

Why would I do that? Kids are just curious creatures and they have no boundaries.

Don't fear it then. Search your feelings, train yourself to accept these things. Now I can't stop this Jedi thing. lol.
