Quote: FaceNo Earthly idea. To be quite honest in a shocking display of ignorance, I'm only sorta sure it's even churning. I vaguely remember slogging thru a website to increase the amount that went in, and that's the entirety of my knowledge about 401k or anything to do with what I got. Oh, and I got about $2k in "retirement", but I couldn't tell you how or where or is or what it's doing. I just know it's on my check.
Probably something you should look into. Could be invested in something really crappy that's not earning you as much money as it could. Or it could be invested in something really risky, which you also claim to not be interested in.
Quote: billryanAt least two people here claim to be able to live in Vegas for under $1,000 a month so who needs a retirement plan.
You could live for $1,000 month almost anywhere in the U.S. if you have a paid-off house.
Even if you don't have a paid-off house, if you're living with someone who is equally contributing to bills it's still completely feasible.
Glad to see you have diversified into boats.Quote: FaceYes to all except ingots. No smelter at the shop, I got a lead guy.
Just trying to hang out. I don't get investing at all, i think I'm too risk adverse, and downright averse when it comes to the idea of my money just going *poof* without being able to punch the man responsible. Hence dumping all my money into cars and guns. I am quite a bit ahead on the latter (thanks, Obama!), but the former has surely made my entire life a net loss lol

Meh. Back of the pad figgerin', I'm making more on the side hustle than I'd save spending that time obsessing over numbers, and an obsession is exactly what it'd become. Taking all of my zero knowledge and zero ability to forecast and making emotional choices based on company morals and actions with no thought of finances. No thanks. Leave it to the gods, I can't spare the ignorance.
I'm of the mind I won't be needing that 80's and 90's money, and my life's goal is pretty much "Teddy K without the bombs". Reckon I can make retirement happen with the working wages, and have whatever these mystery funds turn into be burnt by my kid on hotrods and fishing gear.

I knew one couple who owned their own home then their baccarat dealer son decieded to open a spa in this 'booming area'. He sold them 20% of the spa which meant that when he ran it into the ground, the bank took their home and sold it.
New Mexico teachers had a Pension Faire. All these companies showed up with front end loads and fees and fees and fees. None of those salesmen had their funds invested in the companies they were selling. They were all invested in no load ultra low fee situations.
Not sure what your 401k choices are, but I believe that these days, most 401k plans have a "target date" fund option. Just choose the fund for the year you plan to retire, and boom, you're all set up. Then you can go on ignoring it until retirement.Quote: FaceMeh. Not saying that happened to me..
Just got home from trick or treating in the rain. There were not a lot of kids out so people were just unloading candy. They each completely filled a pillow case. Each got 18 bags of chips and 27 full size candy bars. They did pretty well. Only 3 huggies and no pop this year. They are lucky that I dont like candy or Inwould be crushing their stash.

Years ago they started warning people not to eat unwrapped food. (or maybe that was just my mom). Chips are okay I guess, though I wouldn't want that either.
Otherwise we used to get popcorn balls or an apple with a razor blade in it. I've considered giving out hot scoops of macaroni & cheese. Do they still make large "jawbreaker" candy, the kind you can choke on?

Interesting to note that a quarter (25c) comes in at #48, and a dime comes in at #78, providing a monetary index for the candy rankings.
Quote: JoemanI'm a little late finding this since Halloween has passed, but FiveThirtyEight has come out with their candy power rankings. I agree with Reese's Peanut Butter Cups occupying the top spot, but I think it's a little bush league that the RPBC Mini's occupy the second. And Reese's Pieces at #6? Puh-leeze, I can't remember the last time I saw anyone eating RP's.

When you are retired, property tax rates are an important factor in choosing where you live.
I own a 3600 sq ft house in a nice neighborhood and my property taxes are $2,300. And there is no state income tax here.

well not just chips. Some cheese curls, cheetos, sun chips, and others. Looks like people are going to walmart and buying the large multipacks of assorted chips. It has always been a thing around here but this year it was a lot more than normal. I am wondering if it is cost. You can get the 60 pack of chips for around $15. A bag of chocolate candy was around $14 this year. Chocolate prices seemed a little higher than I am remembering.

so give out spare change to the very few that visit

I have never seen anyone give chips either and when you said huggies I thought you meant diapers. You Midwesterners are strange, and I can say that because I grew up drinking "pop" but now I drink "soda".
One with diabetes.Quote: billryanMy first year here, I had a few visitors. Because my dog barks whenever the bell is rung, I decided to hang out on the porch and give the stuff out. How
Because with lower property taxes, we can pay teachers, police, librarians and firemen lower wages because cost of living lower
With your high property taxes, I cant imagine the very high salaries you have to pay to attract good teachers, police ect.

In Nevada we have no state income taxes and property taxes are rather low. We compensate for that by having lousy schools and a service oriented economy where stupid people thrive.

They don’t contain chocolate. How could they possibly mimic the amazing Reece’s peanutbutter cup with no chocolate?

Yeah, I bought RPs once, after I saw them in ET. They were not just awful, it was a shock Reese would admit to making them.
You know, Spielberg WANTED to use M&Ms. Mars Candy refused. Once of the more stupid marketing decisions ever. Think it's in the textbooks. They were worried about some weird alien thinking they were good.

What’s Chipped ham? We have creamed chipped beef.
I’m from Philadelphia area. There are several things I can only assume are regional because my midwestern/southern friends have never heard or can’t get:
- The obvious, Cheesesteaks/Hoagies
- Tastykakes
- Water Ice
- Pork Roll (aka Taylor Ham)
- Peanut Chews
- Herr’s potato chips
- Stromboli
- Porchetta
- Snapper Soup
- Scrapple
- Whoopie Pie
- Tomato Pie
- Funnel Cake

You're right. I was 25 years great plains, 10 years pacific northwest, and 20+ years deep South. I dont know what half of those are, and haven't eaten but 1 or 2.
I don't get Tastykakes at all. Bought them on reputation, threw them away.
Scrapple, though, if it's what I think it is, is breakfast food heaven. Should be on more menus, though I think other places serve skillet breakfasts that come close.
Funnel cake is only at carnivals and fairs where I've lived. That is goooood stuff. Same?

Yea Tastycakes aren’t really anything special. Just unremarkable mass produced cake, like entenmann's. Does the rest of the world have entenmann's?
I’m not a fan of scrapple. I think it tastes like literal sh*t.
I hesitated to list funnel cake because I think it’s spread a good bit with traveling fairs, but originally It’s a Pennsylvania Dutch thing, like Whoopie Pies. And Shoe Fly Pie. Don’t they have Shoe Fly Pie in the south too?
