Excellent idea! I'd follow it.

Wow Jane, you're all over the internet! I just figured out that your handle is poker player. I was probably the last to know. Duh.

All over the internet? Dear God the one person in Vegas with my name is NOT me; she's apparently some porn queen and not me. I swear. I am, however the pkrplr4116 who is a poker player and who IS all over in poker forums, but I haven't been very active in them since Black Friday, to be honest. I'd love to remove that other person's horrid sex stuff from online, but since its not me, I can't make her do it. What a drag that is. Anyway, I'm happy to keep this thread going or have a new one. I'll let the Wizard decide.

Mike, I think, is the name of the Wizard? Thank you for much for allowing me continue with the weight loss thing. Someone today reminded me this is a gambling forum, so, since my 'thing' is donating to charities, if I don't lose the 25 pounds within a certain time, say 6 months, I'll make a cash donation to Three Square. In this way, no one benefits personally and I always donate food to them, anyway. I enjoy the shopping for the bargains in food and it would be a sacrifice to just hand over the money. But I'm willing to do that if in 6 months time I haven't lost 25 pounds. Granted no one has anything riding on it, but in order to make it a gambling thread, I'm surely willing to do this.

I went to my very first Overeaters Anonymous meeting this afternoon. My first tip to anyone reading this. Interstate 15 between Russell and Flamingo is bumper to bumper at 3:30 on a Sunday afternoon. The line to get off at Flamingo was HORRIBLE. I gave up on going that way and took Spring Mountain west. Great traffic avoidance. I don’t know why the casinos think the time just before Xmas is slow; everyone was heading toward the Strip.
How was the meeting? Small-six people and one was just there for her friend. I learned there is a big difference between AA or NA and OA. I was surprised. I learned new words today
1. Alcoholic food Yup this word describes food that we eat that makes us want to eat more. Bingo! (I know, gambling, right) I have a lot of alcoholic foods. Anything/everything that comes out of a bakery. And sugar, like in candy, esp chocolate for the serotonin lift, I know all about that. Corn on the cob (I don’t know why about this one).
2. Triggers: emotional and otherwise. The gal merely touched on this, so more when get the full concept. I suspect its not just emotional. I’m guessing people, places and things, such as events, parties, sports games, BBQs, etc. but I don’t know.

I got the beginners’ packet today and will read it tonight. In a PM I told a WoV member I am planning on going swimming tomorrow. Now that I have told the forum, I think I’m committed to going. This is the one reason I did this publically. Thanks, all for your help. I’ll keep you posted. Going to another OA meeting off
Charleston tomorrow night.

That is a very reasonable goal. 4 pounds a month in real weight loss is doable, and safe.

What I meant was that pkrplr4116 shows up on several sites and numerous pages. I don't know anything about that other business and I certainly don't know your name. You might want to keep it that way. You also may not want to announce your whereabouts in advance. You can't be too cautious these days.

You must have some good poker stories that I'm sure many here would enjoy if you care to share.

I'll put up $100 to Three Square if you make it. Just to make it official, I'd like to weigh you in and hopefully take a picture to mark the starting point. Finally, I'd like to suggest we start a new thread for this. If I split off the existing posts from this thread, do you have a request what I title the new thread?

ABSOLUTELY! Can we name it after Christmas? Mike Muldoon isn't in at Three Square right now and I'd like to get them involved. Can we leave it here, for now? I'm up for an official weight in. I forgot in the 3rd attempt to send you a PM to ask you what part of town you live in. I'm southest. Any chance you live near here? We can meet anywhere. I'll write another PM in Word and save it, to get some specifics.

I went to LVAC on Eastern and did 6 laps in the pool. Can't say it was awe inspiring, but I always honor my word. I will 3x/week, baring any illness or trips out of town. I go to Laughlin twice every month. the VP there is GREAT!

No. After the thrashing I took here, mainly from Dorothy, I insisted that if I'm to do the negotiating I wanted a condition she had to keep the weight off for at least another six months. HB would have none of that.

I'm getting excited about the pkrplr challenge. I hope to meet her between Xmas and New Years for the weigh in and official start.

Mike and pkrplr4116 should me at the foot of Red Cap. Have the official weigh-in there, and then proceed to climb to the top. If you can make it there, you can do anything.

Not only do you become super excited when you make it to the top, I would imagine that climb would fulfill an entire weeks worth of swimming!

It is a hard climb, but can be done. Mike can attest to the fact that I am NOT the picture of fitness ;-)

Why on Earth not? It seems to me that the other six months would effectively just be part of the bet.

One of my favorites is Charque de llama, which is fried llama jerky, corn, eggs and cheese ... Bolivian llama makes the dish soar ... it happens to be high protein, low fat, low cal., which makes it a great food if one wants to lose weight as part of a wager ...

I'm pretty sure I've eaten horse meat, at a Paris hotel restaurant many, many years ago. It tasted like beef, except a little spicier. I had no qualms about it at all; it was like getting revenge for all those nags I bet on to win that came in dead last. :)

I met her at the Boulder Station, bathroom scale in hand, right about that time (Dec 29) to officially record her weight and go over the terms of the challenge. Since then she got a bad case of something, probably the flu, and has put off the challenge, I suppose. However, as long as I drove all the way to the Boulder Station I'd like to post the pictures I took.

Why? The female WoV weight loss sagas can be one continuous thread, kind of like the Odyssey.

It's not like this thread has been getting a lot of action since no one took up HB's attempted return to the weight loss betting world....

So, nobody tell me wife I'm meeting strange women in casino parking garages.

Went to first weight training class yesterday at CMU. Last health club I joined was in 1966 2 months before getting honorable
discharge from USAF. Now let the Feds screw with me LOL That health club was mainly just a few weight stations, slant boards, and a swimming pool. Hey, it was 1966.

Now they got machine they for every muscle except the ones between your toes. DAMN Plus spinning machines, skiing, running , walking, cycling, etc. Double damn. All with built in heart rate display, calorie counters, who know's what. And of course a small screen TV. with 93 f***ing channels LOL

Weighed 224, 40 inch waist last year in Vegas. New dungarees today 198 and 36 inch waist. Goal for next Vegas visit 165 and 32 waist.
Or at least 180 and 34. Time will tell.

Who knows, maybe nobody will confuse me with Rodney Dangerfield then !

Actually there is a walking track up above the weight room. I walked it for 5 laps yesterday. Was only planning on 1 or 2 laps, but it went past this one little exercise station where a young lady was jumping rope. She was no more than 20 years old, blonde hair in a pony tail. She certainly helped increase my heart rate.

Don't disparage that old health club - while some of the new machines can be beneficial, I would advise you to try to some lifting with free wights before you default to the machines. It can be dangerous if you're not careful, but as long as you're not pushing yourself without a spotter, it should be fine.

It may just be my personal preference toward history (lifted free weights extensively in high school for football) or "fun level" (I find the machines to be lame), but I believe there is actual research that free weights have benefits that the machines don't. The benefits are stuff like muscle/ligament stability, agility, balance, etc. I suppose for a middle-aged gentleman like yourself, this stuff may not be as important compared to someone training for competitive sports. The machines will definitely suffice for getting in a generic strength training workout for the purpose of increasing muscle mass.

Also, be wary of measuring just your weight as an indication of health if you are starting to weight train. You can put on muscle which will confound the issue. Measuring with a tape measure (which you are also doing, good) can be a better indication.

I am a believer in plain old weights too. Had a friend back in high school who was really ripped. Poor, like me, his weights were bricks tied to the end a 2 by 4. In the old health club I went from a sloppy 190 to a fit 165 in 2 months. Brutal, but I was only 26 then.
Will be 73 on May 16.

I just spent the last several hours reading a great many posts. I'm very glad the drama is over. I'm proud of HB for her success. I live in Vegas and would love some motivation to lose weight, too. Here is my history. At my heaviest I was 205 around 2003. In 2005 After the end of a 13 yr long relationship, I lost approx 30 lbs. After about 6 mos of being single, I met a nice guy who was also overweight. BUT he goes to the gym everyday. Before any of you tell me he just says he goes to the gym, pls don't waste your typing. He goes and lifts weights and is still quite overweight. I have joined the gym LVAC, but have never gone. Seriously. I am putting myself out there so I get some kicks in the rump. I keep thinking I should g, but then I don't. Yes, its the same gym he goes to. I'm too out of shape for anything more strenous than the pool, at first, but maybe basic stuff?!

Anyway, the way I lost the wieght was Phentermine. I began taking the drug when I was maybe 39? Around there. It was the only thing that worked, but I had to doctor shop after about a year. I was taking maybe 2-3/day for a long time. I have not taken this drug or any other drugs for years, now. I am 52 now and I need a hard shove in the right direction. I am up to 185 right this minute and don't ever want to get back to 205. Money isn't my motivation. So I am asking the members for ideas for motivations-I guess if I had to give money if I didn't lose the weight, I'd be motivated to lose it, but the attainment of the money isn't enough (I don't think). I guess ENOUGH money would always do it, but I don't want to put myself in the position where the minute the bet was won, I'd eat again. I'd just like to want to live a different lifestyle and I don't want to, now, on my own.

When I was in my 20s, in the 1908s, I fell in love with cocaine as a way to lose weight. I didn't lose weight using the drug, but I did have to check into a long term treatment center to 'rearrange' my thinking. It worked big time. Till I fell in love with phentermine. I am too old to be risking a heart attack with that drug, and I'm long enough away from it that, like cocaine, I have no desire to get hooked again. Yes, I thank God I never did meth; it wasn't around when I was doing coke, or I'd prob be dead today.

Yes, I know I'm asking for help...its always been the only way I ever did anything right. I got sober for my dad, in fact...till it became about doing it for me. He was my motivator, as he was my emotional rock. He passed in 2008 at age 88. My three brothers live on the other coast and have their own families. So there is no one to do this for, but me. And I lack motivation. So, I've laid this all out. Does anyone have any advice? HB for one, I'd love to hear how you held on for the 9 mos.

Thanks for reading this!

P.S. I don't have a twin

When I responded to this post on Dec. 23rd I was skeptical and said it looked like a middle of the night one time post. Was I really that far off? Although she's visited, Jane's last post was on Dec. 29th at which time she was considering names for her challenge. The Wizard was exited and met her for a weigh in. We've heard nothing since. Is there something going on behind the scenes or is this not happening.

This challenge has gone cold. I lost contact with pkrplr around the new year. That is the last time I drive to the Boulder Station to get a challenge going.
