That's what I figured.

So, if it is illegal, are all of the bettors technically breaking the law?

If so, might not the Wiz be considered an accessory to a crime, by facilitating and participating in the ongoing discussion?

Not that I want this thread to end, but might his rear end be flapping in the breeze on this one?

It's not a crime to make a friendly wager with a friend in any jurisdiction that I know of. I can't imagine anybody being prosecuted for that. Now, soliciting "book" across state lines via use of the wires? We are getting into federal crime territory ... :P But, again, no crime here that anyone would prosecute. (For one thing, no one is benefiting from the wager).

Just don't except any recourse when you come to the courts whining about getting stiffed. It's not their job to mediate your gambling disputes. Most professional gamblers use arbitration, which has been discussed here before.

If this is a good story, give me an example of a lousy one.

I can't because I've forgotten them. Bad stories are boring, lack emotion, and are easily forgetable.

This isn't boring, nor does it lack emotion. It's full of drama, full of players all very much involved and many wanting several different outcomes. Regardless of topic, a story that holds my attention and causes a personal reaction is something I deem as "good", regardless of what my personal reaction may be.

This be a good one, cully. Aye, wery good indeed.

Its good because we can't tell who the protagonist or the antagonist is,
or even who's playing who. It seems to change from week to week.

I just spent the last 90 minutes flipping back and forth between work and the last 7 pages of this thread. FWIW, this was MUCH more interesting than the movie on my flight home last night.

HB, at some point during the challenge, mentioned submitting her pictures and blog to the Dr. Oz show. I don't know what has happened with that. I would say that if she succeeds the whole rigamarole would make for interesting 'reality TV'. If she fails it probably isn't worth a dime to TV.

would make very boring TV. Girl goes on diet, girl

Guy gets in boat with other guy, guy shoots at alligator. Guy kills alligator. Guy pulls gator into boat. Guy finds another gator. Guy shots at gator. Guy misses. Other guy curses. That shit has lasted 3 seasons.

Guy gets in truck. Guy drives on ice. Lots of ice. Hills. Intentionally shaky camera work. Oooooh, nighttime. More driving. Driving on a frozen lake. Oooh, reached destination. 5 seasons.

What reality TV are YOU watching...

Key word here: Alligator. How many alligators in
the HB story? A reality show about somebody on a
diet wouldn't even be interesting to people who are
on diets, let alone anybody else. Get real. Even
building motorcycles got boring so they threw in
a fake war between father and son. Showing
somebody painting their bedroom is more exciting
than watching somebody diet.

Good choice not trying to defend the popularity of Ice Road Truckers.

Also, you do know that there are several very highly rated reality shows about weight loss, right? The Biggest Loser, Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition, Heavy...

Those involve competitions and multiple subjects. Not
one person and that's it. I hate those shows BTW,
embarrassing yourself on national TV takes a special
kind of 'loser', and it has nothing to do with weight
loss. Why not have a show about men getting penis
enlargements, that would be just about as entertaining.
"Look America, I have a tiny wee-wee, can anybody

Couldn't resist...

I think Heavy and Extreme Makeover each focus on one subject per episode, chronicling their story in an elapsed-time format. That sounds about like what would happen here. I don't watch those shows, and I wouldn't watch this either, but I have no doubt that the people who do watch those very popular shows would watch an episode about HB...

Based partly on a minor comment SOOPOO made in the message "relayed" from Hot Blond, I think the latest controversy was just an attempt to hold onto the #2 spot in the top threads list. It worked -- 100 posts of bickering and counter accusations in this thread while I was in Las Vegas for WoVCon][ and not posting new Casino Chips of the Day. :-)

BTW, as I sit right now in SLC waiting for my connection home, I'm still hopeful we can continue to avoid such silly drama in that thread.

I don't personally find it intriguing when another person wakes up from a coma on General Hospital, and I doubt you do either. But some people must since that show's been on since before I was born.

Is there something about this story that you think is less interesting than the stories about any other person on a diet who is featured on Heavy or Extreme Makeover? Those shows do each tell 22 weight loss stories per season (I haven't checked - I assume they're the usual 22 episodes per season cable format...). Like I said, I don't watch these shows. But so far, you haven't convinced me that this story is less interesting than the boring crap that is already on these shows...

I understand the feelings that could lead to breaking off communication -- I've been called a liar here, too -- but I am disappointed that such a thing occurred. I have never had any direct communication with HB, but I have developed the impression that she is an emotional individual who is passionate about her likes, dislikes, interests, and ideas. Such people can be quite wonderful to know and simultaneously quite infuriating to deal with -- the relationship is rarely dull. Hope the situation resolves nicely and soon, just as I hope that her health issues, weight loss efforts, and wagers all work out well.

I assume/hope, too, that my quip about the top threads list was accepted in the same jest with which it was offered. Hey, even I am adding to the post count for this thread!

Trying but it ain't easy. Josie's brother Joseph is 74 and there are questions about him being able to care for himself.
So I might be driving to Baltimore to check things out.

But hey, I am 72, never taken a pill in my life, cholesterol, bp all great, so I am not complaining.

This debacle is still in play. Before HB called me a liar and stopped communicating, she did say, perhaps even in a post here (and I'm NOT going to re-read all the posts!), that her only responsibility is to show up in Las Vegas on October 17 and weigh in with the Wizard as a witness. At that time all bets will be resolved. Although we would all like to continue reading her blog, and the resulting comments of forum members, and follow her progress, that is optional, and she has no formal responsibility to post. I would assume that HB still considers the Wiz and Switch her friends, and perhaps she has been in communication with them.

As the 'brainchild' of this.... I can assure you that NOTHING about this has been 'orchestrated', in the sense of some nefarious plan.... As best I can tell, the brother just did his sister a favor and really isn't that interested in the twists and turns of this challenge.

Seriously, 1BB? Does this trail of confusion and misperception and accusations really seem 'carefully orchestrated'?

If the past is any indicator, and it usually is, if she
was losing weight she'd be here telling us about
every pound. The fact thats she's so obviously
absent indicates that things probably aren't going
so well. With the middle of Oct only about 20 weeks
away, time is not on her side anymore.

I would say no. I think around $8000 is on the line. My guess is those places are VERY expensive, and would cost far more than $8000 for the next 20 weeks. That doesn't even take into account the lost wages that HB would suffer. HB knows how to win the challenge. Her many blogs are a testament to that. The question is whether she has the fortitude to follow the plan she laid out for herself. There are many forum members who have bet that she doesn't.

I'm thinking of a new contest that says she can weigh
300 by Oct 15th. The difference between 260 and 300
is not that great. I'd be willing to bet that she couldn't

is not that great. I'd be willing to bet that she couldn't
do it. She would have to bet that she could.

As she was down to 220 or so to get to 300 would take a massive weight gain. Just as I didn't think she had the willpower to complete the loss, I would bet she does not have the willpower to complete a gain of that magnitude.

You're assuming she's at 220 or less now. I'm
assuming she's at 240+ now. Its do-able. No
matter what she says on Tuesday, I'm only
prepared to believe what the scale says in
Oct. I have a side bet riding on this with a
forum member and the scale doesn't lie.

I would say no. I think around $8000 is on the line. My guess is those places are VERY expensive, and would cost far more than $8000 for the next 20 weeks. .

There's gastic bypass for $7300 in Tijanna (as seen on the Internets).

You still have to lose the weight after the operation.
