Quote: Mission146Quote: smoothgrhFour Queens Casino is closing its keno lounge in a few days.
Despite keno's terrible odds, do you lament the slow end to this old-school casino fixture?
"Lament," is a strong word.
There are still a few places with live Keno, for now. I'd wonder if The D is one and if their returns are still comparatively good by Live Keno standards.
The D's live keno was located right near the sportsbook at the time I was there. I believe there was a draw every three minutes, the minimum card cost was $0.40 and minimum card (total) purchase was $4.00. Just as I recall (I included this in my D Review, I think.)
The return was over 80%.
So, you have an expected loss of under one dollar per thirty minutes and get free drinks. You can/could just watch sports on all of the TV's between draws. That's honestly an amazingly good value, if you really think about it.
Wow, I am shocked the return would be that high.
Quote: DRich
Wow, I am shocked the return would be that high.
It might not be that way anymore. Here's my review:
https://wizardofvegas.com/hotels/d/
One Spot was the best at 87.5%, and obviously, would have the lowest variance of the Keno games.
I played the 80.0% fourteen-spot. I also only did it for one half hour because there were no games I cared about (on TV) at the time. I mainly just did it so I could report if I would be still served multiple free drinks doing it that way.
...and I might also like Keno.
EDIT TO ADD: My review says 14-spot, so it must have been that. I think I played one other time and did the seven-spot, but that was the next time I stayed there. This post originally said Seven-Spot instead of fourteen. Seven-Spot was 84.7%.
I trust my two-day memory more than my 7.5 year memory. I also had a notebook.

I actually looked up the definition to consider whether "lament" was the appropriate word, then decided you gotta evoke passion (in a good way) to put on a good show.

As an example, on a particular 3 leg parlay I set up, the boost changed the odds from +411 to +463. You can still make the minimum bet [50 cents] so it doesn't seem to be about having you bet more.
QUESTIONS: Should a bettor consider this a better bet than instead making the bets without parlaying with the 'boost' tokens? Why are they so keen on promoting parlay betting?
Quote: from help sectionBetMGM automatically calculates parlay odds; you don’t need to worry about the math. However, here’s a breakdown if you’d like to know:
1. First, using a betting odds converter, you must convert American odds into decimal odds. The Tigers (+110) are 2.1 in decimal odds, and the Braves-Nationals (-115) are 1.87.
2. Multiply the decimal odds (2.1 x 1.87) to get your multiplier (3.927).
3. Multiply the multiplier (3.927) by your wager amount ($84) for the payout ($329.87)
Quote: pertinent T&CHOW TO CLAIM THIS SPORTS PROMOTION:
4. To claim this Sports Promotion, log in to your online BetMGM Sports account via the mobile app or website. Upon first login today, you will receive an NBA 10% Parlay Boost Token.
5.Token can only be used on parlay wagers with minimum of 3 legs and made entirely of NBA wagers. Token must be used within 3 days of receiving it. Maximum stake to use token is $100.
6. Extra winnings from winning a parlay using the token will be awarded as cash.
7. Maximum token that can received from this promotion is one (1) 10% parlay boost token today.
8. Parlay Boost Tokens cannot be used on Single or One-Game Parlay bets.
Thanks for using my question.Quote: odiousgambitAt BetMGM online sports betting, they really like to promote parlay betting, and will constantly offer bonuses they call "tokens"....
I guess it was almost a 'given' that the boost tokens are worth using if you are going to bet anyway, unless you would have said they cheat you the way they set up the parlay odds. So that goes to the second part of my question, which is "why are they keen on it?" I think there are two possibilities [tho what I think doesn't mean as much as what you would, but here it is anyway]
They insist, usually, on a 3-leg parlay, and by that they mean for you to use 3 separate games as well as 3 bets generally. So the thinking is, the longer the string of bets, the better for them.
* That may mean they aren't smart about what increasing variance means to the house
* or that they're quite intelligently [thank you very much] found that it decreases the effect of a bettor stumbling across their odds-makers making a mistake on some single bet, by combining it with other bets.
I'm learning quite a bit about sports gambling messing around with the online variety and will blog about it.

They sometimes offer what they call "risk free bets", which actually have some risk. If you win, you get the winnings plus your wager back, as normal. If you lose, you get a free-bet back for the same amount that, however, does not allow you to keep the wagered amount, only the winnings. You can bet on anything sports.
I figure if it was flipping a fair coin, 50% of the time you win, 25% of the time you break even, 25% of the time you lose. Seems like player advantage to take the bet even if it is not a fair coin. I crunched some numbers against a 10% edge and probably did it wrong, but still seems advantage to player.
Is this a good offer to take?

It is and you should just have someone offset your bet who is simultaneously doing the free bet promotion. There might be better ways, but that's just the one that popped into my head instantly. You will want to create your accounts at different times, not be related and not be in close physical proximity (geotracking) when you do it.
Basically, each player could select opposing sides of a -110 half point run line. One of you would win the bet (and get the money) whilst the other would lose and get the rebate. At that point, you'd just have to make enough to cover the juice on the winning side of the bet and anything over that would be profit.
so far I've noticed they pay no attention to off-setting votes bets, so I could just do it myselfQuote: Mission146It is and you should just have someone offset your bet who is simultaneously doing the free bet promotion. Quote: odiousgambitif you mean both of us need to be in on the promotion, is this a matter of controlling variance?
Guaranteed profit, depending on the playthrough requirement of the rebate...which is often only 1x anyway.

Good question. I assume you can also use the "risk free bet" on anything as well as the "free bet."
My advice would be to bet on a big longshot on the money line with both bets.
Let's take the Alabama/Miami (FL) college football game on 9/4/21, for example:
Alabama -1000
Miami (FL) +575
If we assume the same house edge either way, the probability of Miami winning is 14.01%. If they lose, then bet a similar game with the Free Bet.
The following table shows the three possible outcomes after both games.
Event | Pays | Probability | 0.00% |
---|---|---|---|
Win first game | 5.75 | 14.01% | 80.57% |
Win second game | 4.75 | 12.05% | 57.23% |
Lose both | -1 | 73.94% | -73.94% |
Total | 100.00% | 63.87% |
The bottom right cell shows this Risk Free bet is worth 63.87% of face value, based on this game. It would be worth more on a bigger longshot.
there is something being promoted all the time. Much of it clearly is not to get excited about at all, while this type you have to check around for and wait and hope for
I doubt it is only betMGM doing it but I want to bet using my laptop; many of these outfits are set up expecting you to use your smartphone. Don't have or want one.
PS i note that losing both in your example is around 74% probability. So there's that too to ponder
I should add 2 things about it. There is generally a limit , last one I saw was $25 being the max to bet, if remembered right
the other thing is that the initial bet was restricted to which event they wanted to promote. This last one was to bet on the first game of the stanley cup. No restriction as to odds on first bet, can't remember if it had to be on the moneyline.
If you lose and you make your second bet with their money, the only restriction is that it can't be more than -200 odds. I said that right, they don't want you to go for the sure thing it seems. So if it was -210 or something, can't do that. That's ironic considering what you said, and also if you win you get peanuts and they keep their portion . They have it backwards
But on this second bet, you can bet on 'any sports'
Quote: odiousgambitwow, thanks, that is shocking

I understand that Wizard is approaching it from an expected value standpoint, but I like my way because you cannot fail to profit. For $1,000 invested (say the rebate is $500), 1x playthrough and conservative betting on the rebate, a player should profit $400-$450 almost without fail if VP is available.

The potentially disagreeable variance of the Wizard's strategy is something to think about. I took the offer and wound up losing both bets, to which you have to say "what's the big deal? that is the most likely outcome". When it happens, though, it's hard to be philosophical about it.
Still, if you had your druthers, you'd wish for as many of these as you can get.
I have limitations on how much I can take advantage, that is in the blogposts. A#1 is the threat to report your activity to the IRS if you win big at all. Ain't happening.

DraftKings recently had a small promotion on a game called Slingo Classic. You don't happen to have a basic strategy for it?
With the joker selections I'm assuming you are going to always complete a line if possible, but not 100% certain (maybe times when a center or corner could be more valuable?). Or less obvious with a joker do you add a 3rd pick to a line or is it better to grab a corner even if only 0 or 1 positions already claimed on that line?

A retrospective of the game at Las Vegas Review-Journal
Quote: ETSAs a follow up question would it every be valuable to buy more spins?
The help page for the online Slingo classic version says that the base game and each extra spin have an RTP of 95%. It isn't hard to calculate the RTP of an extra spin if you have even a crude idea of the frequencies of jokers. I did this with a data set I collected at low stakes. The ratio of fair value to extra game cost that I am offered agrees with the 95% RTP over almost three orders of magnitude in cost (free games costing between $0.02 and $13.31 in my data set). This means my rough estimate of the frequencies must be close to correct. The standard deviation of the ratio from 0.95 diverges if I change my joker frequencies.
It is pretty clear that the game designers did the free-game cost calculation properly. You would never increase your EV by buying a free game versus starting over on a new Slingo game. You just buy yourself more Slingos at a premium to fair value and increase your variance.
Note that the 95% RTP for the base game assumes you are playing basic strategy well. Slingo would be very difficult to play well. The extra game is easier to play well compared to the base game -- just make the most slingos. Therefore, if you still want to play Slingo, your overall EV will probably not be as far below 95% if you are paying for the maximum number of extra games. Personally, I would never pay for an extra game.

Mentioned in this episode are underwater cemeteries. Your cremated remains are mixed in cement and shaped by a mold into (for example) a hollow sphere with holes for fish to swim in and out of. The molds are then submerged to form a man-made reef. The one the wizard mentions, however, is probably Neptune's Reef whose design is inspired by Atlantis. Here, the remains are molded into animal shapes (like sea shells, fish and sea turtles) and attached to the submerged structure...
Since it's the Halloween season and we're already flirting with submechanophobia, also mentioned is Nelson's Landing near Vegas. In an earlier livestream, it was revealed that the bay has an underwater statue of a giant octopus...

However, with Pai Gow Poker, I found what other players expect makes banking undesirable to pursue [for me anyway]. A dealer finally explained "the way the Asians play, they make an agreement to give the money they won from each other back to each other. That way the effect is only how you did against the dealer. They mostly bank to just change their luck. " Non-Asians also have odd reactions.
Is this also true of Tiles?

It's the same way they have been giving you a freebet, that is, they've had a lot of offers to cover your entire bet if you lose a bet, and they always say if you lose the "freebet" you lose again of course, and when you win, you however only get the winnings, not the value of the amount bet... "please note" as it says. But in this new thing I am seeing, you only get half the original bet in the bet you get to make when you lose.
Now they are favoring this new way, see below. *But there is a new twist*, in that you *get* this half-bet whether you win or lose. I can confirm this is the case. In this offer, you bet $10 and immediately get $5 to bet with with the usual not quite as good as it sounds freebet, in that you only get the winnings.
Nonetheless I am thinking this is maybe just as good, still something that is +EV, do you agree?
here's another one that has been once a week
Quote:Place a prop bet on a player to score the first touchdown of any NFL game and you’ll receive up to $25 in Free Bets if your wager loses
To receive the $25 in a betMGM-type freebet, you bet $25 and lose, to receive $1 you bet $1 and lose. But again you will receive any winnings on this type freebet, but not the wagered amount. Original bet as specified, freebet on any sport.
My problem is that this for a prop bet. For all I know the house edge is 40%. There is no "won't score the first TD" bet to compare it with. If we knew it was maybe a 10% house edge this would be +EV. Would you still go for it?

Manufacturer demo...
In your advice* about second-chance bets you indicated that the best strategy is to take longshots both in the initial bet and the second chance bet as well. I confess I quickly lost heart with this**. But other gamblers, I have long observed, may be willing to follow orders on the first bet when using any similar offer; however when they lose, they go to the lowest variance game they can use to try to get their money back, pushups be damned.
What's the real cure for this problem?
Sorry, I have trouble making this a nice short question but I'd love it if you addressed it.
* you also put it in an Ask-the-W, thanks! ... which can be seen in this link for a refresher https://wizardofodds.com/ask-the-wizard/347/
** I blogged about why, if anyone wants to be bored
