2023 WoV Picks Game DISCUSSION Thread

After early Sunday games, it appears to me that no one can win the Perfection Bonus this week. The only contestant with a perfect record so far is odiousgambit with 4-0, but odious made no confidence pick, so he can't finish better than 5-0.

So far, the aggregate record of all contestants this week is .... (gulp) .... 56 - 56.

Miplet is correct; the program is grading Seahawks -3.5 incorrectly as an across the board issue; I will see if anyone had Steelers +3.5 and if those are correct. Will edit.

ADDED: Thank you Miplet! Nobody had Steelers +3.5. This also did not seem to impact Seahawks totals and appears to be restricted to incorrect spread grade. In an hour or two, I’ll manually grade a few players such that all possible Picks (that were made) are represented and ensure everything else is correct.

***It probably would have been faster to manually grade rather than do what I did; functionally, I did end up manually grading the majority of Picks. In any event, Seahawks -3.5 appears to be the only error as it was graded as a win, when it should be a loss, and applies to the following:

The records just need corrected for those three, with Miplet's being a Confidence Pick.

I have edited Gordon's post to reflect the correct and updated Standings. Please note that the standings might not be perfectly in order (by percentage), so please consider this a temporary fix and I imagine Gordon will post new standings (please) after the Seahawks correction is made. I just wanted to play around with the tables minimally, lest I break something. Either way, this week's percentages and updated season percentages are now correct.

If I can manage to go 4-2 in week 18 and get all or part of the Mr. Average award I will donate it to the playoff picks pool.

WEEK 18 ITEMS

As we approach Week 18, I want to address the following items and look at where this season stands:

1.) THANK YOUS AND SPECIAL THANK YOUS

First of all, I want to thank everyone for playing this 2023 WoV NFL Picks Game! I imagine that we'll have this game again in 2024 as long as we can keep the player count north of twenty.

I'd like to give a special, 'Thank you,' to Miplet, whose site makes posting the Lines, as well as participants comparing Lines in real time, much easier.

I'd like to give special 'Thank yous,' both to Gordonm888 and Unjon for helping run the game vis-a-vis grading.

2.) PLAYOFF PICKS GAME

There will be a Playoff Picks Game substantially similar to the one we did last year. I'll likely create the thread for that game later today, but possibly tomorrow morning. Anyone who participated in this game will automatically receive a reminder to make your Picks, at the appropriate time; anyone else may participate by saying they wish to in this thread, that thread, or via PM...and any such people would get a reminder. People can also just PM Picks (without a reminder) when the time comes.

If you did not play in this year's WoV Picks Game, then please be aware of the following criteria to play in the Playoff Game:

A.) Participation in a prior WoV (regular) Picks Game.

OR:

B.) Join Date on, or before, 9/1/23 AND at least fifty lifetime posts.

3.) PRIZE PAYOUTS

Prize payouts will likely take place immediately following the Super Bowl, just so that I can do them all in one go. It's possible that I will do regular WoV Picks Game payouts prior to that if I hear back from everyone vis-a-vis preferred methods of payment.

4.) THE RACE TOWARDS MEDIOCRITY

As it stands, there appear to be eleven players who could finish the season at exactly .500, despite the fact that nobody currently sits at such. Additionally, there are two players who could finish the season one win, or one loss, away from .500 in addition to those who could hit it exactly. Half the field is in contention.

5.) THE RACE TO THE BOTTOM

My 'Best' theoretical record is 34-55 for 0.38202247191; in theory, I could make a Confidence Pick, but I'd hardly consider it a betrayal of anyone's expectations to say that I am absolutely not going to.

It appears that AvianRandy can still beat me, but would need to go 0-6 compared to my 5-0.

The biggest threat I face is JohnnyQ; I assume he's going to make a Confidence Pick, so he would be in a position that, if I were to go 5-0, he could win one game (as long as it's not the Confidence Pick) and beat me. JohnnyQ could also beat me if I went 4-1 by going 0-6. Actually, 0-5 if he didn't make a Confidence Pick would still be good. It's possible that making a Confidence Pick has no chance of actually helping him, but I'll let him figure that out. He can't take his Skip Week, because if he did, there's no way he could beat me even if I went 5-0.

THE BIG SHOW!!!

It appears that only SOOPOO, JML24 and AssWhooperMcDaddy are only playing for Perfection Bonuses.

Everyone between OdiousGambit and FourFiveFace can reasonably take a crack at Most Average.

OdiousGambit (and above) are all in contention for Top Three; PlayYourCardsRight, in theory, could go 0-6 and fall to .563; NCFatCat already has a better winning percentage than that and quite a few (who aren't already there) aren't far off.

UnJon's worst case scenario is to go 0-6 and end up with a 57.9% winning percentage; therefore, NCFatCat (and anyone Top Three) is still alive to win the whole shebang!

Before this deal was funded, I think it was the year Cam Newton was a rookie or his second year, I won first place with, I believe around a 56% record. I guess over the years this is an exercise in the facts that oddsmakers are pretty damn sharp and most all gamblers never beat the vig! I’d much prefer a money line contest - give everybody 5,000 points at the beginning of the Season and whoever has the most points at the end wins. Play as many and as much as you want each week.

I'd like to thank everyone for participating in this year's WoV Picks Game and I will absolutely post up the Playoff Picks Game thread tomorrow. I hope everyone who participated in this main game will choose to play in that.

I'd like to thank Miplet for his lines comparison tool and both UnJon and Gordonm888 for the grading help, which would otherwise be the bulk of the time spend running this game.

It appears we have several players missing Week 18, so I will await for a list of who didn't make Picks and then double check for them, though I don't think I missed anyone.

I'll let everyone in contention for other positions see where they stand, but my only competition for last place is now JohnnyQ. Unfortunately, because AvianRandy and myself share Raiders -3, I don't believe he can actually beat me for last place now. Naturally, I am willing to share the sent time of my Picks for comparison to the time I opened AvianRandy's Picks, should anyone ask.

JohnnyQ is very much alive for last place as he and I don't share any Picks (if I was going to cheat, that's obviously where I'd have done it...lol). Taking the Overs might be seen as something of a gamble on his part, but my guess is he looked at what I have been picking, in recent weeks, and noted that I only take game totals OVER 50, hoping to lose. For that reason, he probably picked the Overs he did (hoping to lose) thinking that I wouldn't pick those ones---correct!

Interestingly, it's possible that last place could come down to Bills/Dolphins, which JohnnyQ and I picked opposite sides of. That would be interesting. I think the Dolphins will win that one pretty handily (probably wrong), so I picked the Bills.

Correct; I always check for that. I hadn’t actually closely looked at Scolist’s picks when I’d made the first post.

Mission firmly sucks and has run away with the you suck prize no matter what happens.

I took this as my skip week since I didn’t have a shot at 1st or Mr. Average, and wanted to beat my brother (Sparty 10k) to win a side bet.

I will explain one result a bit early.

As mentioned by unjon, Joeman went 5-0 and his aggregate score was 52-53.

He might have made 6-0 and 53-53, winning both the Perfection Bonus and at least a piece of the Mr. Average Award. However, Joeman's fifth pick was '49ers Under 41' and the result was that the 49ers game total was exactly 41.

What a heart-breaking miss!

Joeman still may win the Mr. Average award depending upon the result of the Dolphins/Bills game.

By 10ths of percent points (and a three-way tie in win/loss standings), congrats to DJ Chaps for the victory.

The aggregate record of all contestants was 1194-1227. But that was with at least Mission and avianrandy trying to make losing picks for most of the season.

What a tight race, right down to the last game. Great sweat. Props to Mission for the invite and the contest itself, as well to him and the others for chipping in to make sure it ran so smooth week to week. Will likely try and see if I can stay warm and have a go at the playoff game as well.

Yeah, I had jokingly made my 6-0 prediction upthread. The perfection bonus would have been nice (I don't suppose Mission gives a consolation perfection payout since it was the last week!), but I was actually happy to get the push on the 49ers total seeing as the total was 27 at the half, and already 41 with plenty of time still left in the 4th.

I checked after the late games and saw that there was still a chance for Mr. Average. I was about to post the scenarios, but UnJon beat me to it.
