many have called this the greatest round of boxing of all time - Irish Mickey Ward vs. Arturo Gatti - first fight - round 9

The greatest fight I remember was probably about 10 years ago and I don't remember their names. They were two lightweights or middle weights and there were 10 knockdowns. One fighter was knocked down six times and the other fighter was knocked down four times. The one knocked down six times won the fight.

interesting
I googled a bunch of different ways to try and find out about that fight but had no luck
any chance you remember a name or names of the boxers______?
I think you might be talking about a UFC fight - I don't think that would fly in modern boxing

per a google search Vic Toweel knocked down Danny O'Sullivan 14 times in a ten round match in 1950 - the last knock down was a KO

Was Gatti's death confirmed as a suicide? I seem to recall a lot of questions involving his girlfriend.

It was definitely a boxing match. I will do some research and see if I can find it.

Not the one that I was thinking of but this came up in my Google search.

"In 1909 Joe Jeanette was knocked down 27 times and still went on to beat Sam McVey by TKO in the 50th round''

The greatest heavyweight fight I have seen was Evander Holyfield vs. former champion Michael Dokes. Dokes had dominated before going to prison and was on a huge comeback. He'd won eight or nine in a row after being released, and Holyfield was a Cruiserweight moving up in class. It was a war, and almost went the distance. I highly recommend it.
An odd note from this fight: Going in, it was assumed the winner would get a shot at Champion Mike Tyson. After the fight, Tyson's promoter refused to book a Holyifield fight, claiming he was too small and needed to add both experience and weight. Instead, they booked Dokes as Tyson's next opponent. It was the first of several times Tyson ducked Evander.

Another fight I'd heard much about but only saw recently was the unification battle between Carlos Zarate and Alphonso Zamora. These two Mexican fighters were both undefeated and claiming the World Title. Zarare was taller and much more experienced, while Zamora was a Baby Bull. The fight wasn't televised, and I didn't see it for about a decade, but it lived up to the hype.
A bizarre in-ring intrusion by a drunken fan and the beatdown he gets just added to the excitement.
On a personal note, my friend was an aspiring boxer who swore Zamora would destroy the thin Zarate and convinced me to split a hundred-dollar bet with him. That was about half a month's spending money.

another great round of boxing - Hagler vs. Hearns round 1 - Ring Magazine called it the greatest round of boxing ever

Hearns came out on fire and broke his hand in the round - so very brutal - these dudes literally risk their lives in the ring

The NFL reviews a zillion things now with ‘expedited booth reviews’ to correct errors.
Vikings QB has head almost ripped off via a grabbed face mask. It’s called a safety and not a penalty. There were no other defenders or blockers that would interfere with the 7 referees seeing it. Vikings, if play called correctly, get 1st down with 80 yards to go, so unlikely to score the 8 points needed. But not impossible.

For those that had over 48 (me!) it was a great call.

pretty interesting column to me anyway in which the writer claims that the Lebron father and son thing is a sad farce

in the pre-season Bronny averaged 4.2 p.p.g. and shot 25% from the field and made 1 of 12 three point tries

in his first game in the NBA he took one shot, missed, got one rebound, no assists, no steals and left after 3 minutes

Dalton Knecht is now perceived as the exciting new rookie on the Lakers after he scored 35 points in an exhibition game, including 20 of the last 22 points in the 4th Qtr.

This is not news to anyone who follows basketball closely. Knecht is a first round pick who would be a favorite to succeed in the NBA. Bronny is a second round pick who most likely would not have been drafted at all if he was not Lebron’s son. Bronny is a big underdog to have a successful NBA career. There is NO WAY Bronny would have even played in that first regular season game at all if he wasn’t a nepotism case.

Those two jerks spent about $4,000 on those seats. For that sort of money, you'd think you could interfere with play and try to steal a player's glove. It's the Bronx, for goodness sake.

Grabbing a players wrist is criminal assault
Should be banned for life and criminally charged
He wasn't going for the ball
Mookie could have gotten injured
I'm more offended by the fan on the right

Mookie was assaulting his friend.

In all seriousness, I think the guy in pinstripes may face criminal charges. The other guy was stupid, and they were both probably drunk, but that is battery, at a minimum.

Banned from tonight's game.
Saw this post

"Austin Capobianco said he got a call from the Yankees today about being banned tonight. Was told if he or his friend try to get in with other tickets, they’ll be arrested at the door. He’s hoping it’s a short term ban."

On the weird side. Gronk knows this dude and is not surprised by what he did. Guy was on the hockey team at Arizona when Gronk was there. Weider, AZ has a hockey team

Last night, Tucson Sports led with Austin Wells and his bat flip—not Volpe's grand slam, but Wells and his bat flip after extending the lead.

Defensive collapse of epic proportions by Yankees.
Judge takes eye off soft liner to him to look at runner on first? There was a zero percent chance that runner would have tried for second, and a zero percent chance Judge picks the guy off of first base. He drops ball.
Volpe gets grounder and has to throw ball 30 feet to Chisholm at 3rd base. He throws it 25 feet. Chisholm has chance to scoop it (it’s a difficult play) but can’t.
Ground ball to Rizzo at first base. He plays it so passively he can’t just run to the bag to beat Betts. No worries; he just needs to toss it to the pitcher (Cole) covering 1st. Except Cole decided not to be bothered. Media blaming Cole, of course. I think Rizzo should get some of the blame as well.

There were other bad defensive plays on a list they showed on the TV coverage that I missed, as I wasn’t solely watching that game. Judge finally had a good night at the plate, but all people will remember was the drop. I don’t think a major league centerfielder drops that even 1 in 5000 tries.

I think that was all on Cole. The pitcher has to run to the base until he is called off. Cole admitted after the game that it was his fault as he thought it was hit harder but the ball had spin on it that slowed it down.

I believe they said Judge did not have an error all year.

Another unacceptable mistake by the Yankees was the catcher's interference when Ohtani was at bat in the 8th. It did not cost them a run but still not a play a professional player should be making.

The Yankees had poor defense most of the year and it caught up with them on this game.

That spin move looked incredible, but he would have been vulnerable if those defenders had been a split second quicker.
I'd tell him to put that move away now that it's on the highlight reel.

Speaking of sweet spin moves and incredible athletes, Ja Morant had two awesome 360 layups in the same game to avoid shot blockers last night. My favorite is the second one where there's more of a fake dunk first.

I stated I wouldn't post any more vids of back in the day greats
but then I realized I hadn't posted one of Kareem - so here's one more - most prolly the last
Pat Riley, Isaiah Thomas and Julius Erving have called him the GOAT -

my fave parts of the vid:

if you stop it at 1:43 you will see him around the top of the backboard on a dunk
and at 1:55 a vicious dunk over Wilt
and also towards the end lots of awesome sky hooks
he was so very, very great

Another disaster for NFL. On last drive, ANOTHER obvious face mask penalty missed. Then on 2 point conversion, TWO obvious penalties missed! QB gets his face mask smacked hard enough his head jolts backwards, while his wide receiver is being held for obvious pass interference. Neither called. Home team Ravens win.
Even Al Michaels bemoaned the no calls. I’m guessing next year some ‘guy in the booth’ will get the authority to call face mask penalties. The QB has an official specifically assigned to look at him. This doofus missed TWO in the last minute. How does he keep a job?

Lew Alcindors's parents lived on 205th St. and 104th Avenue, and my grandmother lived on 217th and 104th, about a half-mile away. I rode past the house fairly often, hoping he might be visiting. I never did see him, but I said hello to his parents a few times. They only moved there after he finished high school, as commuting to the Catholic school in upper Manhattan would have been a nightmare.

the first game against Power Memorial with Alcindor Dematha of Hyattsville MD lost
but they won the rematch ending Power's 71 game winning streak
Dematha double teamed him front and back and got weak side help and they practiced with tennis racquets on defense so their shots would have more arc against him
Alcindor finished with just 16 points, 14 below his average - he took just 11 shots
the link has a detailed history of the game which got a tremendous amount of attention in the Washington DC area
largely because of Dematha the DC area which includes some of Maryland and northern Va. became known as having great basketball players -

they went to the Final Four 3 years in a row

this is how they lost in '83 with the great Slamma Hakeem just watching NC State's Lo Charles dunk in an air ball for the upset

I guess Hakeem thought the ball was going to hit the rim

In an alternate universe they don’t play their entire primes with Jordan and things break a little different, Hakeem is a top 5 all time player arguable greatest and Clyde is like top 15 or somewhere around Julius Erving. Hakeem was clearly the best big between Kareem and Shaq in an era with several great bigs including Patrick Ewing and David Robinson.

Probably shoulda won 1-2 in college. Drexler led the Blazers to the finals twice in three years, once losing to Jordan and the Bulls. Hakeem won two titles, one alongside Drexler, in the only two years Jordan was out of the game during his prime. He has WAY more combined steals and blocks than anyone in nba history since they started tracking, along with an unblockable fadeaway and great footwork/post moves on offense. Would be interesting to have seen how a matchup between prime Kobe Shaq vs prime Hakeem and Clyde would go had they been on a different timeline.

I agree that Hakeem is in the running for the greatest center ever -
it is phenomenal that he averaged that many steals per game - 2.6 in his best year

of course, Wilt had dominant offensive numbers over all of them early in his career, and also with rebounding
as I'm sure you know he got 100 in one game, just incredible, and averaged 50 one year and 44 the next year
he averaged 23 bounds per game thru his career and averaged 27 one year - really great - way, way more than Hakeem or Kareem

of course, Wilt's competition early in his career was nothing compared to the competition Hakeem faced

it makes it hard to compare them - I would say that Hakeem was much more mobile but Wilt was physically stronger

now - how about Hakeem vs. Kareem -

Kareem in his best years averaged about 4 blocks per game - just a little bit less than Hakeem in his best years - they didn't keep track of blocks for his first 4 years - he prolly had more than that

Kareem in his best year averaged 17 bounds per game - Hakeem - 14 in his best year

Kareem in his best year averaged 5.4 assists per game - Hakeem - 2.9 assists

1989 - Kareem and Hakeem dueled in L.A. - Kareem was 41 - and he got 21 points and 13 rebounds - Hakeem was 26 and got 30 points and 11 rebounds

when Kareem was 38 he got 46 points playing against Houston with Hakeem and Ralph Sampson - Hakeem was 23 at the time

so who was better - I can't say - it's a very tough call - it's hard for me to admit that any Center was better than Kareem - but it is a possibility

here they are dueling each other - in this vid Kareem was 38 and Hakeem was 23 - of course Kareem was much quicker and springier when he was young

How about them Caviliers
Warriors came into Cleveland with a 7-1 record after a statement win over the Celtics
Undefeated Caviliers totally spanked the Warriors with total domination
Half time score 83 to 42

The first team to start 10-0 while scoring over 110 every game.

What surprises me is the Cavs don't seem to have any players in the top 5 of the major statistical categories. I haven't watched any of their games but that would make it seem like a complete team as opposed to one star going crazy.

I’m going to next home game Monday. I wonder if he will even be coaching by then. I think I’d bet no. ‘Suspended while we complete a full investigation.’ Or some such.

Plan on taking up pickle ball at all SooPoo? I was reading recently where Rick Barry has become a world class pickle ball player, and that he’ll drive an hour or two to the villages to play there sometimes.

https://www.alligator.org/article/2024/11/uf-basketball-coach-accused-of-sexual-harassment-and-stalking

The first woman, a former UF student, said that Golden stalked her in person, both in his car and on foot, and that this occurred “more than 10 times.” On one occasion, she said she posted her location on her Instagram story, and Golden messaged her shortly after saying that he was in the area “waiting for [her].”

She also said Golden sent unsolicited photos of his genitalia to her. On multiple occasions, the first woman said she received the photos while the team was traveling on the road. The nature of Golden’s alleged stalking became more assertive over time, she said.

“At first, it starts off slow, like, ‘Oh, wow. That’s odd. This guy is showing us attention,’” the first woman said. “And then it becomes, ‘Wow, he’s kind of crossing a line. No, he didn’t mean it that way.’ Then it’s, ‘Wait, he’s fully stepping over that line.’ And then it’s, ‘Wow, there’s a picture of his d*ck.’ It was a full grooming process with all of us.”

I’m aware of what ‘grooming process’ means. If the girls are underage, it’s a crime. If they are of age, isn’t ALL dating a ‘grooming process’? If he sent Dick pictures after the girls told him not to, I think that can be considered a crime of stalking, too.

(Absolute jerk) kid in high school would go up to random girls and basically ask them to f… him. Most just told him to get away. I once asked him what he was thinking…. He answered, around 1 in 50 say yes, and who cares what the other 49 think?

Anyway, it’s hard to imagine this coach surviving this. Florida just fired another coach (women’s basketball?) recently, for, you guessed it, …..

article shows how the 3 pointer has come to dominate in the NBA

Celts become the 3rd team in history to take more 3s than 2s - averaging 51.1 3s and only 39.7 2s

and the younger players are even more into 3s so the trend will likely become even stronger

Grooming laws are well intended but can lead to ridiculous results.
I volunteered at a boy's basketball rec night when I lived in NY. Over the years, rules came in that made sense- volunteers couldn't be alone with a kid, volunteers needed to stay out of showers, limited contact in locker rooms, rules were made about what we could or couldn't discuss, off-campus activities- such as inviting a kid to a Knicks game or a college tournament were discouraged and required documentation. I'd done that, especially with kids whose father wasn't around, but it now wasn't worth the hassle.
Then, this came up. A 13-year-old boy came to me, scared and looking for advice. It seemed he had a girlfriend and while they weren't having sex, they'd spend hours making out and feeling each other up. Later that night, the boys testicles would ache and become painful. I laughed and started to tell him there was a simple solution, but I caught myself. I decided that encouraging a kid to masturbate might be considered grooming and ended up telling him he needed to talk to his mom or maybe his guidance counselor. I couldn't help thinking I had failed. It becomes hard to guide boys into manhood when you can't discuss the very thing they are obsessed with.

Adrian Dantley (AD) - yet another great from Dematha is a very underrated superstar imho
you won't hear much chatter about him on boards like this
he wasn't a leaper and there was no dazzle to his game - it was rock solid fundamentals
he had a very quick first step and a very soft shooting touch
he averaged 30 or more over several years in the NBA
one year his fg % was .580 while averaging 30
higher than Kareem in most of his years and much higher than Hakeem
and believe or not it's even higher than Wilt's in 11 of Wilt's 15 years
that is quite AMAZING for a small forward who shot mostly from middle distance
I think it's accurate to say that basically nobody could handle him - he could get one or 2 steps on just about anybody

A casual observation that may not be accurate.
DeMatha famously ended Powers long winning streak, after losing to them the year before. Both games were played on Demathas home court.
From 1972 to 1978, one of my high schools, Holy Cross, played and lost to Dematha three times in tournaments—all on DeMathas's home court.
Do they ever travel for big games?

those 2 games that Dematha played against Power were not on Dematha's home court
they were at Cole Field House - U. of Maryland. facility - seating 14,500 - just read a story indicating they sold out for those games
they could not have fit all of the fans who wanted to come at Dematha's small gym - it only seated 650 - they built a new gym in 2010 that seats double that
I don't know about how often they travelled for big games - I know that locally they often played away because their gym was small

one of my fave hoops memories:

the best h.s. game I ever saw was watching Mackin topple Dematha in '67 and become #1 in the DC area - (iirc it was played at GW) - Austin Carr dominated - he was by far the best h.s. player I ever saw, and one of the greatest college players I ever saw

1961 flashback - Pat Riley's Schenectady squad beats Power - Lew Alcindor (Kareem) was just 14 and only 6'10" - a Freshman
