So I used to go to the Walmart near the airport to get my hair cut, since it was cheap ($10 for cut and shampoo) and I get a buzz cut which takes literally 5 minutes. They raised their prices to 15.95, and now is no longer the bargain it used to be.

I ask you frugal (or cheapass lol) folk, where do you get your hair cut in Las Vegas? I'm not looking for an experience with a buxom blonde (although if she works cheap it would be nice), just a quick cut under $12 or so. Thanks.

I agree. If you have a buzz, just do it yourself and spend that $12 at the VP machines instead. :D

Great Clips has a deal I guess like forever stamps. You buy a card and it locks in a 9.99 haircut.

9.99 card

Great Clips

For the record I sometimes get 6.99 coupons from Great Clips in the mail and also from merchants around the salon as well so maybe they have one in Vegas with the same set-up.

I like the barber in the El Cortez, Ernesto Ortiz. $12.00 flat. Whether or not to tip is up to you.

I haven't paid for a haircut in over 20 years.

Clippers w/ attachments #3 and #4. I do it myself. Fast, simple, and cheap.

My son, age 14, never had a haircut outside the home. And he is a chick magnet.

I do enjoy a shave at the El Cortez most trips. I give Ernesto $20 ($15 for the shave and $5 tip). It's very relaxing.

I don't live in Vegas, and my wife is previously a licensed cosmetologist, (nursing student now) so she just cuts my hair.

She does a pretty good job, but I imagine she was more careful around the ears with her paying customers...

I never pay for a haircut.
I cut my hair once a year. I give myself a buzz cut once a year and just let it all grow out over a year. Once it starts to get irritating, long and getting in the eyes a lot, which takes about a year, I just do the buzz cut again. People at work always get a yearly chuckle, one day looking like a long haired hippie, next day I could pass for a marine. Same routine year after year.
Its just a forum. Nothing here to get obsessed about.

So I ask you frugal (or cheapass lol) folk, where do you get your hair cut in Las Vegas?

Perhaps there is a beautician's school which wants paying customers?

IF living in Vegas its too important to be able to interact well with the cops and with the casino security personnel, otherwise I would advise going around in a dirty brown robe, sandals and full beard and long untended hair. Once a year, after Santa Claus season, you go get shorn of all facial hair and get a buzz cut at about one-quarter inch. You tell the barber, I have to look totally different from my Wanted Poster.

Taking photos of yourself after a haircut is good guide for a do it yourself job or a spousal job.

The usual rule is that a man should have a manicure, pedicure and hair cut that will impress his banker and other financial backers. So that is the test. If you have to impress a construction loan committee then take the time to do it. If you don't have to impress any banker then find yourself a friendly babe.

Such a guy would probably be your doctor or attorney or gaming advisor now, collecting on your Karma and his grace. Good thing you made guys like him study hard, it was more on his behalf than yours. Actually, he's disciplined, so he studied hard of his own accord. And he's probably still your friend. :) Gotta say, mighty fine and handsome young man, a bad haircut cannot damage that; probably turned into an awesome grown man of great success.

I get my hair cut a Hair Today, Eastern and Tropicana (2375 East Tropicana).

I was once accused by some fellow schoolboy of getting a haircut from a parent who put a soupbowl over my head and trimmed around it. Trouble was I had in fact gone to a barber shop for it. Fortunately, few photos of me were ever taken in that era. Tonsorial elegance has never had much appeal to me anyway.

I would highly recommend against this. The three four worst places to get a haircut are, in order:

1. Your parents.
2. Beauty school.
3. Girlfriend.
4. Super Cuts or equivalent.

Might it depend on the style or type of cut? I have very thick, fast growing hair that I keep short. After reading this thread I'm thinking of getting some clippers and having my wife give it a try. The convenience alone would be worth it. If she messes up it will grow back soon enough. What could go wrong here?

Seems damn near impossible to mess up. Just use the appropriate attachment and work your way around your head. I do it myself- don't even use a mirror. If the attachment falls off (never happened to me), you will create a pretty awesome bald spot.

Hair....hmmm. Such a complicated subject.

I'm quite happy with a clean head, whether there's an aspect of baldness or not. Thick hair is pretty great as long as it's not really long - the Wiz has that just about right with that thick rumpled look and about 2 inch length - it screams for a woman's fingers to play with it (NOT a pass at the very-married Wiz, just an example). Short/military looks perfect on some guys, others are better with more length. Bald can be very hot, but I've never seen a good combover, though my grandpa wore one my whole life. Long, straight hair looks pretty great on a man, especially American Indian or Asian, but long curly hair doesn't work nearly as well, and I like it better when curly is above the collar/shoulder line; Mission has that just right.

The Kewpie Doll thing a lot of men are getting styled into, where there's a ridge of longer hair gelled straight up, is very strange, and I haven't seen anyone it flatters yet (sorry, aceofspades; think I saw you were wearing that in a picture somewhere). Was never much fond of mullets or fades, or carving stuff into your skull, either. Charlie Sheen made that look ok in Major League; can't think of another guy that looked good on. Big sideburns went out with Elvis even though stylists keep trying to bring them back. Other guys on here, PGD and teliot's hair both say teacher/professional, and look good on them. Miplet's suits him very well, as does DJTeddy's. A good cornrow/weave looks great on a guy at whatever length, but not the big rasta braids; the narrow ones. Lots of guys look good with bangs; hardly anybody looks good with a center part, but there are a few. Shaved neck is nice, but there's a VERY hot thing you can add to a kiss by locking your fingers in the hair, right next to the skull at the top of the neck and tugging gently there. If there's no hair to tug on, the sensation can't be given.

When I was a freshman undergraduate, there was a winter dance coming up. I and a dozen of my friends made an appointment at a beauty school for that morning, and we all walked down there together. Turned out they were teaching Vidal Sassoon precision haircuts that day. Oops! We all got the SAME haircut, which was a heavy-bangs short cut with the neckline shaved either straight or into 1 or 2 points; it would have looked good on Audrey Hepburn, but not on any of us. I have a group picture from that dance that's just hysterical (1976) because most of the guys had longer hair than any of us girls after beauty school, and the squished-looking faces on those of us (me) who shouldn't wear bangs...it was just awful. lol just thinking about it. So, yeah, you will probably get a really GOOD haircut at a beauty school, but whether it will look good on YOU might be an entirely different question. And the neck shave....geez, I pity you guys who have to get that done. Ugh.

My wife just cut my hair today, despite the free cuts, I still only sit down for a cut once every six months, or so. Clipper-Fade, Two-Guard on the sides and back, Four-Guard on top faded in with a Three-Guard. My hair grows pretty slowly in my advanced age, so it lasts awhile.

30 in three weeks...lol

I was mainly kidding, but my hair used to grow so fast that it'd be shaggy after a month, so age is the only thing of which I know to attribute the difference.

All I know is there were two beauty schools by my house growing up in Seal Beach. My mother would send me to one of them with a couple bucks to get a haircut sometimes. Going off memory, about half the time the gal would do an absolutely horrible job. Any random person off the street could probably do better. Since I was about 12 at the time, hitting on them was not really an option. Most of them spoke with a heavy eastern-European accent, as I vaguely recall, so it would have been hard to make small talk. If I fall on hard times, I'll remember your advice.

The logic, for me, is that even though gambling is a losing proposition, you always have that chance to make money. A haircut, good or bad, has to be paid for. I am lucky that I found a genuinely good independent hairdresser who understands my hair and cuts it for less than $20. But I've paid over $200 for a haircut from time to time, as well. Average is about $40 for a basic cut. Guys, depending on how long they're wearing their hair, should be able to get a basic cut for less than $20 nearly everywhere, but I've known a few in Washington who were willing to pay over $100, and you really can see the difference in most of the cuts; they were doing formal business at the highest level and needed to present well in a culture that cared whether your shirts were bespoke and your shoes Italian and all the rest. The bad thing is, if you're doing that, it's a weekly expense to keep your haircut properly maintained.
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

Ugh.

Babs, you must find this picture and post it.

I bought the clippers several years ago when I just wanted to shave my head and not think about it. I don't generally do that anymore, so I'm trying to convince my girlfriend to learn how to cut my hair. It's a basic men's cut, short on the sides and back, faded to a bit longer on the top. Anyway, she hasn't gotten around to it yet :).

I love how some people will gamble hundreds or thousands of dollars but balk at a haircut costing anything over a sawbuck…where is the logic?

Expected return and cost of labor. Gambling with an advantage = expected return. Paying more then needed for the work involved = cost of labor.

Unfortunately my bankroll only supports quarter play but I find good plays to offset the low coin in per hand.

I required 5 minutes of buzzing and therefore would not pay over the lowest haircut price to get it. I don't want to pay for subsidized costs of women's haircuts.

in a nutshell, I am cheap.

If I fall on hard times, I'll remember your advice.

If you fall on hard times, the women are not interested in you.

A good haircut, a good manicure, an expensive suit, an expensive watch, a slight list to Port from the thick wallet ... all these things are cues to the young ladies.

It's all about efficiency.

Sure it's much cheaper to do it myself, but I cut my hair whenever I want, and I'll be done before the other guy gets to the barber chair.

I too was thinking this as this thread went along, ace. In my experience many players that pay with an advantage or try to play with an advantage, have a 'frugal' side. I know that I do when it comes to a number of things, but my appearance isn't one of them. Unfortunately at 30, I already see my hair situation deteriorating far too quickly. :-( So I visit my hair guy, every week, to look as reasonably good for as long as I can. Plus, I like that fresh trimmed feeling on my neck. :-)

The young ladies to whom this is the sole or primary criterion on which to love you are not young ladies with whom you would be happy, regardless of your income level. You would have the worst of both worlds; you would be paying them for their "time", and they would stay after you've "finished" with them. :)

I feel like this every time I get my hair cut. My hair is just too straight that I can't do anything with it. I usually pay $25 to $35 for my cut and it looks just like it did when I was 5 and my dad cut it on the back porch. I hate my hair, but am also thankful that I still have hair.

the Wiz has that just about right with that thick rumpled look and about 2 inch length - it screams for a woman's fingers to play with it (NOT a pass at the very-married Wiz, just an example)...Other guys on here, PGD and teliot's hair both say teacher/professional, and look good on them. Miplet's suits him very well, as does DJTeddy's.

Thanks! $6.00 haircuts aren't always bad. My problem is I don't get then often enough. #2 buzz-cut. I let it grow until I can't stand it anymore.

It's the same logic that has me cook my own food at home, cut my own grass, wash my own cars and groom my own animals. I do it when I choose, as often as I choose and how I choose.

I don't balk at all and my barber is worth every penny of the eight bucks that he charges as well as the generous tip that I'm happy to give him. I'm thinking of getting clippers and trying it at home for the sheer convenience or is it "shear" convenience?

I wager a few million dollars every year. It has nothing to do with how I spend or otherwise distribute my money. Notice how I changed gamble to wager? I don't gamble.
