Every other casino hotel downtown is out for one reason or another, most because there are no non smoking rooms available.

Thanks, can't afford to stay at the Golden Nugget this trip without dipping in to my gambling budget though.

I personally stay downtown on my last few trips. I like the 4 queens, cheap rooms, top notch video poker. I tend to walk around alot. Its great exercise and a chance to see old underbelly of vegas, cheap motels, bars and pawn shops. I have no problem walking around the neighborhoods by downtown during the day. Not so safe at night. I've actually considered walking from Downtown to the Stratosphere. I like to walk. My longest walk in Vegas was from MGM to Circus Circus,

The California is nice because it is connected via an enclosed bridge to Main Street Station, which has one of my favorite buffets, and 20x odds on Craps.

I've walked from Downtown to Bally's at night. There is a "No Man's Land" between Fremont Street and the Stratosphere that is pretty sketchy, probably due to the jail being located right there. I would not recommend the walk, even in the daytime. There is nothing to see. Take the bus and save your legs for the Strip.

I've done this walk before. I made the trek with my girlfriend at night, back when I didn't know any better. We actually intended to walk from downtown to the Monte Carlo, where we were staying at the time. We gave up at the Stratosphere, and cabbed it from there.

I would not do it again, nor would I recommend it.

One choice is to go to Tacos El Gordo on the strip as Nareed suggested, or you can use your Deuce Pass on any other bus in the city.

The Boulder Highway Express - Direction: Boulder Highway Express Southbound (Towards Sunset & Stephanie) takes 7 minutes to get to Fremont @ Bruce (S) (Stop ID: 1020) where it is a short walk (700 yards) to Charleston Mall (and Tacos).

In general that end of Fremont Street is where a lot of prostitute and drug sales occur. It can be very risky at night. If you really want to walk the whole way (about 2 miles), go down Las Vegas Blvd to Charleston and walk East to the mall from there.

Thanks a lot, looks like the Boulder Highway bus is my best bet. For what its worth, I hate riding the Duece, too slow, too crowded. I much prefer to take the WAX to the strip @ Tropicana and just walking, or taking the MGM monorails.

Looks like California wins. That is the direction I was leaning anyways. I like that the rooms have refrigerators, and I'd say overall the friendliest group of dealers I've ever encountered.

Yes, indeed. But you can get around it. Just take the SDX (Strip and Downtown Express) either to one stop before or after the Deuce, then either walk to the tacos or wait for the deuce and ride it a couple of blocks. I've done that a time or two.

BTW The tacos are right next to Ross Dress For Less. I mention this because that sign is much more visible.

I am a big fan of Tacos El Gordo when they were only in Tijuana, but I would go to the strip location. If you get a hankering for Latino food at the California Casino, it is a much safer walk to go up Main Street (800 yards) to:

Salvadoreno Restaurant 720 North Main Street Las Vegas, NV 89101 (702) 385-3600

The 208 Washington Westbound bus goes every half hour from California by there. Don't take 214 bus as it turns to soon down Bonanza.
Stop 1698 in front of California on Main
Stop 1700 in front of California Parking Lot on Main
Stop 1682 on Main (just before restaurant)
Stop 3114 on Washington you've gone too far and bus turned left on Washington: backtrack to restaurant.
Cross the street to catch the bus to return.

Main Street is pretty barren, and you are likely to run into some homeless people, but it isn't really menacing.

If you really don't want to bother, then you are stuck with Zaba's Mexican Grill at the Plaza (which is more Americanized Mexican food).

There is also Mamacitas on 611 Fremont Street in front of El Cortez casino, and there used to be a Club Azul (115 7th St) where you can eat tacos and Dance to Rock in Espanol on behind the El Cortez, but I am not sure if it is still open. Mamacitas is a little bland, but you have your choice of Mexican or Cuban.

I'd be willing to cook anyone in Vegas a home-style Mexican meal for free, provided they can get the ingredients and the equipped kitchen; and if needed, a ride from and to my hotel.

On Five Hundy by Midnight they said that Mamacitas closed.

I walked with a two other guys from Sahara to downtown a few years ago in July, when it was 115 out. Completely safe, but I'll never do it again.
