Wordle 304 3/6

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 BYBBY ^^^

WordleBot
Skill 90/100 ###
Luck 59/100

^^^: I decided to randomly pick my first guess from all the "99 rated skill words" (there are 5 I think, according to Wordle bot?).
***: Probing word
###: My "Skill" for the 3 guesses was 99-81-99 and I know that higher numbers are better, but I don't know how the 90/100 is calculated. I can think of two possible ways that they get the "skill score" , but they only work if you discount the first guess (see below).

1: (81+99)/2 = 90
2: (SQRT(0.81*0.99) ) x 100 = 89.548... = ~90

A lot of players are failing on Wordle #304. This is just a small sample of what I've seen:

If you find yourself in a xGxGG pattern, as many people did, there are just too many possibilities (14+ depending upon what letters you eliminated) to expect to solve the puzzle by random guessing. You have to abandon what you know and now use probing words, and as many columns as you can, to have any decent chance at it.

It took me five full rows to nail this one down. This was only my second time I've had to use five rows. I was very disappointed in that... until I discovered WordleBot ALSO used five rows for this word! WordleBot also rated my play very skillfully, despite the fact it took five rows, so that made me feel better too.

I also failed today.

Wordle 304 X/6

🟨🟩⬜⬜⬜
⬜🟩⬜⬜🟩
⬜🟩⬜🟩🟩
⬜🟩⬜🟩🟩
⬜🟩⬜🟩🟩
⬜🟩⬜🟩🟩

Didn't get the 2nd, 4th and 5th letters until try#3 and the remaining letters did not lend themselves to dense probe words.

ROAST
COLOR
MOVER
----------
POWER
JOKER
BOXER

Aftre getting mover on try#3 I was faced with:
power
wooer
poker
joker
goner
boxer
foyer
roger
rower

I went with power as it would eliminate power, poker, wooer, rower. Maybe goner would have been a better choice at try#5, but I would still have whiffed on try#6.

Note that the last two possible words you listed in your spoiler weren't possible. (Your first guess also started with that beginning letter in that first position, and since you didn't get a green box with it, it eliminated those two words.)

Also, one of the words you listed, wooer, was a prior answer for an earlier puzzle, so that wouldn't have been valid either, but I wouldn't expect you to know or remember that small detail.

I agree on your first points - still, it would not have changed my play.

I never did a Wordle where wooer was the answer;I must be too new at it. Are we supposed to be eliminating possibilities because they were used months ago? Sheesh.

How do you pronounce today's word?

I've always pronounced it FOY-er / FOY-ur (accent on the first syllable) and I didn't think there was any question as to how. However, I just found this:

In standard American English, FOY-er is the more common pronunciation, but is often derided by speakers of standard British English, among whom FOY-yay is standard. My survey indicated, unsurprisingly that FOY-er is primarily an American pronunciation, but also that some Australians pronounce it this way too.

Interesting. I don't often hear it pronounced FOY-yay.

Growing up in Canada, I pronounced it FOY-yay. I have switched to FOY-er over my 32 years in the US. I should note that FOY-yay is the proper French pronounciation of the word.

I am from and live in Australia:
In normal conversation I will usually pronounce it FOY-er and sometimes FOY-ya, but when I am "playing around" I will pronounce it FOY-yay.

Edit (about 1825, Pac Time):

IMO I don't think my score should count for the above Wordle, because I was helping my mum with it before I played my own game (mainly by showing her "the 5 best starting words") and I got to see her first two^^^ guesses.

^^^: At least in my mind, I had to choose the same as her (for the 1st two guesses) when I played my own game later. Also, I probably would have picked differently for the 1st two, if I hadn't seen her guesses.

Do you think Wordletbot distinguishes between words in common use and others like your choices for turns 3 and 4? Seems to me Wordle almost never picks a word that isn't in everyday usage.

Yeah, maybe. I was trying to put those vowels in position. I’d just run across those two words in crosswords, in the last few days!

I’ve become a big fan of Octordle. Eight simultaneous wordles, trying to finish all in 13 guesses though really 10 guesses is the goal. I’ve managed 10 guesses twice. It’s very difficult. Ed, I think you would enjoy the strategy of it very much.

I think it’s easy to finish in 13 if you start with four probing words, covering 20 different letters. But it’s very difficult if you play to try to get it done in 10 by only starting with 2 probing words.
The race is not always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong; but that is the way to bet.

Thanks for this. Took me 8 tries to get the word.

Feedback:

1. Non-words are allowed and I used one of my choices in this way to figure out where some letters went.
2. Would be helpful to have an alphabet list to know what letters you've gone through
3. Using a letter multiple times gives you a positive result (either B or W) even if only one instance of that letter exists in the word (I haven't tested this in Wordle to see how it's handled there). eg: I sued RATTLE as one of my words and I got "WW" for the Ts. A better result would be "W-"
