American Dreamer is a three decade old Romancing the Stone ripoff, that had almost no commercial or critical success. It's a great date movie, very simple and charming. The heroine is a sexually and romantically frustrated housewife, and the hero is Tom Conti (who played the prisoner in the last Dark Knight movie).
Dead Man is a movie from the 1990's produced by Jim Jarmusch who specializes in completely non-commercial strange and very original movies that big name Hollywood actors love to act in. I liked this one with Johnny Depp starring in a neurotic western. You have to be in the right mood.

One of the greatest casts ever. Everytime I have a stop triggered on a stock my system plays a soundbite of Kevin Spacey/ Jack Lemon interaction:

Kevin Spacey "Because I dont like you"

My nomination for great a great oddball movie is Ed Wood. One of the few movies I can watch over and over and never get tired of. Those of you who question my business strategy of just doing any old thing can blame my inspiration from Ed Wood, both the man and the movie.

I've watched the noted Alec Baldwin scene from this movie probably dozen times but never actually watched the whole thing. Obviously I should.

Martin Landau as Bella Lugosi makes the movie a
classic. The role of a lifetime. And of course theres
no such thing as a bad Johnny Depp movie.

I realized the only Johnny Depp movies I've ever seen are Ed Wood and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We have all the Pirates franchise films but I've never gotten around to sitting down to watch them. Ed Wood is awesome.
I like Heathers, but that's probably more mainstream than what you're going for here.
least 12 times is Ninth Gate. Another Johnny Depp
feature, it was made in the late 90's and directed
by Roman Polanski. Its a moody thriller with lots
of cool EU locations. Depp underplays it as usual,
and there's something about it that makes me watch
it again and again. Its a mood thing, masterfully
done.

That is a great one too.... and it makes it so much more fun to watch a real Ed Wood( when you see all the freaks and stock footage). Mystery Science Theatre did a hilarious Ed wood episode that is out on DVD.

This movie is one of the best ever. The Coen brothers have made so many good movies people tend to overlook this one.

My brother-in-law quoted all those stats and we watched it. He loved it, I didn't really like it at all. Guess I'm not as cultured as everyone else...

Damn right, great movie, and I don't like many!!!
I'll add a few:
The Abandoned (2006-Spanish w/ subtitles)
Ringu (Japanese Version of The Ring and the movie upon which The Ring was premised)
Reign Over Me (Not sure if that's obscure enough...)
Our Mother's Murder (Made for TV movie starring Holly Marie Combs)
Dolores Claiborne (Perhaps not obscure enough?)
Moby Dick (Made for TV, starring Patrick Stewart as Captain Ahab...and he kicked f***ing ass!)
Nuremburg (Starring Alec Baldwin)
***The problem is that I watch so few movies, I'm just guessing on obscurity, I don't really know what is or is not obscure...except made-for-TV movies, by default, I guess)

I once had a state sales manager who told us, the branch managers, that if we never saw the movie to go rent it. The Baldwin speech cuts through, captures, and clairifies the essence of life in the business world. And, like it or not, we almost all live in the "business world."
I would like to make a YouTube video of the Baldwin scene, but to either graduating college students or OWS Types, explaining that the only way you are going to make it in life is to close/produce. To make your boss more money than he pays you. That all of your self-esteem and all the volunteer work you do matter not when it comes to getting and staying employed.

You are probably thinking of ..
The Devil's Backbone (El Espinazo del Diablo). (2001)
Also set during the Spanish civil war, a fine ghost story, I would highly recommend,
though not as appealing as Labyrinth, it's "spiritual successor"

Detour: Lots of people will name-check it, but few have seen it. It's in the public domain, probably on Youtube. 68 minutes of bleakness from 1945, it is the definitive noir for many.
Who'll Stop the Rain: The film adaptation of Dog Soldiers. Nick Nolte and Tuesday Weld smuggle heroin. Everybody loses.
Eraserhead: I still don't know what this is about. The director, David Lynch, described it as "A dream of dark and troubling things." That doesn't even begin to scratch the surface.

The only problem I have with the Baldwin scene
is his youth makes it kinda not believable. He
looks like he's in his late 20's, not old enough
to have enough experience, and certainly not
old enough that the older men in that office
would respect him. Would have sounded more
righteous coming from a seasoned guy of
about 50.

He is 34 in that scene. Levene (Lemmon) supposedly was that character 20 years earlier; he was "Levene the machine", and mentor to Roma (Pacino).
I've known a few guys like that. Most of them burn up pretty fast, leaving very little ash.

The Big Bus, greatest nuclear powered bus disaster movie comedy.

Jack Lemmon was 67 when the movie was made,
and looked it. Baldwin looked 28. I just find it more
not believable the older I get. In 1992, I thought
it was OK. But now, at 63, Baldwin is a punk kid
to me in the movie, and I'm still not as old as
Lemmon was. Baldwin gave a great speech, but
it should have come out of Robert DeNiro's mouth,
he was almost 50 in 1992.

Never heard of it.
They ran "Airplane!" the other day on TV. While it was still funny, it didn't have the "I can't stop laughing" effect it once did. For some reason the scene that amde me laugh most is when Leslie Nielsen goes into the cockpit after the plane lands and he says "I just wanted to wish you luck." That, and the propeller sound effects in all the exterior shots of the jet.

I get a kick out of it when the nun steps in and says "I can help; I speak jive."

That wasn't the nun. It was a middle-aged woman. The nun was accidentally killinmg the teen who needed a transplant, and standing in line to beat up an hysterical passenger.

I saw it recently and was vastly underwhelmed. There were some funny one-liners, but the entire plot of the movie was a throw-away. I guess that was kind of the point, but I could go with never seeing it again, and just reading a compilation of the funny lines. Such as...
Quote:
Ty Webb: You take drugs, Danny?
Danny Noonan: Every day.
Ty Webb: Good. Then what's your problem?
Danny Noonan: I don't know.
Quote: AcesAndEightsI saw it recently and was vastly underwhelmed..
Some movies you can't take out the context of the
time they were made. Caddyshack was a huge hit
30 years ago, its just kinda dumb now. At the
time it was cutting edge.
