You're cleverly insulting his common sense. Just like
B9 was clever in his post. If cleverness is now not
allowed, you must hold yourself to the same standard.
When Reagan said to Mondale in a debate that he
wasn't going to hold Mondale's youth and inexperience
against him, he was cleverly insulting Mondale and
got what was probably the greatest laugh from an
audience in his presidency. Would you have banned
Reagan too?
This whole thing is silly, surely you see that.

I'm starting to get the super secret rules. They're
all about censoring us till we post the way the
censor likes. If you're just being yourself, that
won't fly now. The forum is being run on the
guidelines of Miss Manner's, Judith Martin, the
modern self proclaimed etiquette czar. This doesn't
work when men are dealing with other men, it's
like using a sledge hammer when a wrench is
called for.
Its hardly supersecret rules. The rules have changed recently but there was a giant thread saying no personal insults were allowed and it was clear that B9 was using personal insults. Arguably he has gotten leeway with some of the post from after the rule change but you can't use well I was breaking the rule before and didn't get punished so clearly I shouldn't get banned for this time. General rule just don't break the rules even if you are getting away with it.

Beethoven9th is suspended for 3 days for insults and slurs to forum members. These examples from this thread, and many more in the LGBT shower thread.
#1. Absolutely no personal insults. If you disagree with another forum member, politely attack the writing, not the writer. (Amended 2/23/14 to not allow personal insults at all. The previous policy was more lenient.)
#12. No bullying/trolling: Members are expected to act like ladies and gentlemen. Members may not be overly divisive or abusive to another member.
I don't see the debate.
See the "Noah's Ark Dinosaurs" thread. That debate is hot and several members have both hands full of weapons. Yet, there are no personal attacks, no childish retorts. In fact, there has been open discussion of mutual respect between them, despite the fact that they are attacking with unmitigated ferocity.
The attacks, though, are on the idea, not the person.
It's not censorship, nor is it rocket surgery.
Be nice. Simple.

The rules are incredibly simple don't insult anyone. Rather than trying to see how close you can fly to the sun just don't try to insult people. If you disagree with a point they made attack the point they made rather than mocking the person.

I couldn't agree more. What used to be enjoyable now seems like a chore at times. With suspensions at an all time high, it's very distracting to log on each day wondering who will be the next name in red. Is there a competition to see who can hand out the most suspensions? Going by the list, there have already been 36 suspensions this year as compared to 68 in all of 2013. We now have moderators with their own biases poring over every post and every word just waiting for someone to slip up. We have suspensions from older posts, suspensions reversed and suspensions reduced. The message, whatever it's supposed to be, is not clear. We are told to act like adults but we are treated like children. When I visit other forums, I now find myself looking for their suspension lists. You know what? There aren't any for the most part.
Believe it or not, this is the only forum I have ever joined. That's how much I thought of it when I finally signed up four years ago this July. I just don't like to spend a lot of time on the computer. Would I join today? I'm really not sure.
We all find certain things insulting. It's insulting to me when good members are suspended for making their arguments. It's insulting to see the names of s2dbaker, Beethoven9th and others on a list that has hall of shame above it. What in the world do they have to be ashamed of? It's insulting when suspensions are handed out with glee or in a joking manner at the expense of the person suspended. It's insulting when the response to someone offering constructive criticism is to not let the door hit them on the way out.
Let's hope that doesn't someday change to something different such as will the last member to leave please turn off the lights?

I am 51% in agreement. I was arguing against what I perceived as wrongful suspensions and increased rules from day one. Regarding the rules, people told me if I had been here longer, I would understand why they are necessary. Well, I never bought into that idea. I do not see consistent application of the rules. Nuance is garnering suspensions, as EB states. Cumulative acts are given suspensions, but the suspension is credited to a lone act, which singularly, is completely innocuous. More serious offenses are given passes. There are way too many suspensions, and it is becoming censorship not moderation. There's no reason for a permanent hall of shame--it is a glee type of thing, why isn't that insulting, indirectly, especially with parting comments? If moderators have immunity, fine, but make the rule--absolutely no insults, it's clear, is not one size fits all because insults are subjective.
On the other hand, one should penalize small offenses rapidly without much due process because the cost of a mistake is low. One should not carry out serious penalties until after there is certainty it has been earned and they cannot be redeemed. Moderators should have qualified immunity. As for some people not getting suspensions for their rule-breaking, two wrongs don't make a right. I don't like to abide by that, but functionally, you would have anarchy if you had to be 100% fair because of the burden.
There are some bugs. It's not broken.

What the heck is going on around here.
My comment was 0% smarmy, 0% sarcastic, 100% angry, 100% factual. Before someone calls for someone else's suspension in any open thread, which is provocative and escalating no matter which side of an argument everyone reading might agree with, the accuser should at a minimum check to see whether or not that action has already been taken. The point of the Suspension List, whatever someone might think of the intro, is to keep the forum informed when something has happened, and include links to the offense when appropriate. Please stop mischaraterizing my thoughts or my feelings about what I have posted about something. You have no idea what I'm thinking or feeling, except when I tell you, as I have above: the same as anyone else on here.
Unless of course you're mocking someone's religious beliefs.
Quote: Sabretom2No mocking!!
Unless of course you're mocking someone's religious beliefs.
Again there is significant difference between mocking someone and saying their beliefs are wrong. One of the clearest examples is the religion thread where someone would say I am X for reasons Y and Z a fair rebuttal might be X is wrong for reasons A and B. You can fill in the letters with whatever you want. That is quite different than I am X for reasons Y and Z and having someone respond you are stupid for believing X it is totally wrong.
For instance the Noah's Ark Dinosaur thread mentioned early has many cases of people saying Christianity is right because of certain reasons and others saying its wrong for certain reasons. Never once in that exchange did I see anyone mocking the person who believed that just pointing out what they believed is wrong and giving reasons for why they think it was wrong.
Just like it is fair to say that someone's gambling system is wrong because it defies basic tenets of probability but it is not OK to simply call him stupid. One is attacking a belief the person has which is allowed while the other is attacking the person which is not allowed.
Quote: Twirdman

So inferring that a person is a "chump" would be wrong?
I feel like if you made a rule to suspend people who are publicly calling out for suspensions of other members an automatic suspension would apply for the violator. If they believe something is suspension worthy you can PM a moderator. I feel like this would "clean" up a lot of the threads because a lot of them get hijacked, take this one for example.
Quote: beerseasonI feel like this would "clean" up a lot of the threads because a lot of them get hijacked, take this one for example.
Yes, it's almost as if the nasty Reverend Fred Phelps has hijacked this thread from his grave.
Quote: beerseasonIf they believe something is suspension worthy you can PM a moderator.
Amen. We admins love tattletales since we don't peruse the entire forum. If you notice something you think merits a suspension, and don't report it, don't complain about it later if somebody else gets suspended later for a perceived lesser offense.
I believe that inferring it (deducing that for your own purposes) would be fine. However inferring it publicly and directly (calling them a chump) at someone would not. For example, there is a member who I believe uses this board mainly for trolling. His posts seem to relish conflict and causing others frustration. While I have taken that information for my own use and read his "contributions" in that light, I choose to keep those thoughts private (other than now) because it is not my place to engage or "call out" that behavior. I believe that burden falls to our moderators who allow free expression of ideas within reasonable civility. I have found the moderators thoughtful and willing to express their views with reason and care. They even have been shown to hear public sentiment and reconsider their judgments.Quote: treetopbuddySo inferring that a person is a "chump" would be wrong?
I liken it to a sporting event. Refs do not get everything right. They try their best and sometimes the results are excellent. Also sometimes they don't get it right. However, they do a far better job than what the average person could do. I have reffed basketball for years. After doing so I am much more sympathetic about watching games now. I think we all would be more understanding of the moderators' task if we consider that they must deal with many folks with different sensibilities and points of view. I think they do the best they can should be thanked for their volunteer (I believe) service. (as well as told when we disagree with it)

But you people are intellectually dishonest and won't even admit that I didn't even use the words "predisposed" or "guaranteed"! Anyway, I can't wait to see your next attempt at a shift...lol
Beethoven9th is suspended for 3 days for insults and slurs to forum members. These examples from this thread, and many more in the LGBT shower thread.
POOR B9. I did shed a tear for him( this is yet another example of the women exploiting power, you go girl ;). I really cant believe that he got suspended for this. Why no suspension for the obviously demeaning DJ RAPE comment? DJ gave us a inside point of view from his personal experiences of being in a *sticky situation. He got a "Sorry you were raped by gay's."
Apparently you missed where s2d got a suspension for that very comment about 8 hours before you posted. Or are you too busy yelling about the unfairness you perceive to notice that?
8 hrs before I posted? How any days after he posted it? Dj had pointed out it was a personal insult to him immediately after. It was only after B9 got suspended and the S.H.T.F. Then it seems like a rush was made to be "fair" S2D was joking im sure and it was funny anyways I don't think or B9 should have been suspended. I wont lose any sleep over it.
TBH I think your doing a fine JOB(I just like to bust your_____). No way am I saying you're unfair. ASMAF no need to be totally fair, Some people may deserve some "unfair" treatment in both ways. I just didn't think B9 should not have been on the wrong side of the unfairness. He is, as Soxfan would say, A cool cat, and a valubale poster so im biased.
I am apposed to suspensions of anyone unless they are totally over the line(see TKs suspension post) or dumb trolling system players, Spammers, comments regarding someones personal reputation without substantial evidence, IE BBB is a scammer and a con. That would be an example of a serious violation.
If a new member posts some "winning betting system" not backed up by math, I think in this situation a comment indicating the guy is probably a con should be acceptable, since it benefits the majority of the forum. If you really do get scammed or coned by someone you should be able to explain the situation. I would reserve this for verified members only.

Yellow flag for profanity.
Yellow flag like in football or yellow card (flag) like in soccer (racing)? Perchance "yellow" from an admin could become shorthand for someone's post being up to "the line" or someone who history helped keep in blue instead of red?Quote: WizardYellow flag for profanity.

Sorry, I meant "yellow card," as in golf.
Quote: AxelWolfYes, but im not yelling, just sympathizing BC I like B9 and I didn't see anything wrong with his comments. He may have meant shifty as in:To move and change directions quickly. Since he had already claimed his bantering partner was shifting around a lot. We have no reason to think he meant shifty as in dishonest.Quote: beachbumbabsQuote: AxelWolfWOW! where do I get a picket sign and a Free Beethoven9th shirt? OH I see it, its right next to the, god hates gays shirts. Fred Phelps is still causing turmoil from the "grave"Quote: beachbumbabsQuote: Beethoven9th (to bw)Gee, awesome comeback.
Anyway, it looks like my post went right over your head since you didn't address anything I said.
(next post to bw) And what else did I say in that post, Einstein? Oh, that's right...you didn't read the rest of it!
(next post to bw) You really need to have a talk with your fellow LGBTEWSLWQWLQ members. According to them, anyone who opposes gay marriage is "anti-gay".Quote: Beethoven9th(to Twirdman)

Then we're good to go, Axel; thanks for the post. I took your outrage to be genuine upset and all the caps to be yelling at me; I should have known better, since you've been busting my chops since 2.3 seconds after the Wizard announced he was promoting me. (BTW "promoting" almost feels like it should be in quotes as a euphemism, but since he's trusting me with his baby, it's mostly an honor - except the last few days.)
Anyways, onward and upward.
A note to all: I have a 2 day gambling date, so Sister Mary Elephant will not be on duty. Dig out the cigars, the pizza, and the cards and have a boy's night out in here while I'm gone. And even when I get back, it'd be fine with me if we all went back to enjoying each other's company for a while.
