a man in Virginia was just exonerated and found innocent of a murder after spending 45 years in prison

wow - that's very rough - he originally plead guilty so he could avoid the death penalty

In wrongful convictions there is often a person like this involved,

Quote:

Much of the key evidence ... was the work of Mary Jane Burton, a senior analyst at Virginia’s crime lab who has since died. Her work was previously linked to wrongful convictions, and is now under a broader review after a podcast raised allegations that she had taken shortcuts and might have even falsified results

The State's Attorney's officers of a state can create such a monster , and really rely on such. I have a memory of stories of other such women that I would no longer remember the details about, like which state, so that diminishes my observation if you'd like to discount it ................. on that admittedly thin evidence , even if I remember it right, this seems to often be women who turn to this

I wouldn't try to say it's never a man. I *will* say there is something in the nature of the human female that when she decides to turn Cold, she can really turn Cold ... feel important and jealous about that too
the next time Dame Fortune toys with your heart, your soul and your wallet, raise your glass and praise her thus: “Thanks for nothing, you cold-hearted, evil, damnable, nefarious, low-life, malicious monster from Hell!”   She is, after all, stone deaf. ... Arnold Snyder

I would choose the death penalty over a 60 day sentence.
At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.

an early Happy Birthday wish for Jimmy Carter who will turn 100 on October 24

he will be the only U.S. President ever to reach that age

this post is not political - I think whatever you might have thought about his politics, most would agree that he is a high quality person

A record-breaking number of mosquitoes in and around Las Vegas are carrying West Nile virus, sparking warnings from local health officials who say the public should take precautions to avoid getting bit. West Nile virus can cause fever, headaches, vomiting and diarrhea and is fatal in about 1 of 150 cases. There are no vaccines or medications to treat or prevent the mosquito-borne illness.

In recent weeks, 169 of over 24,000 pools of mosquitoes tested for West Nile virus returned positive — meaning at least one insect in the pool carried the disease — across 25 southern Nevada ZIP codes. The number of mosquitoes recorded and the tally of positive pools this early in the season break the area’s records for both metrics, set in 2019.

“These are huge numbers of mosquitoes, and we’ve already identified a concerning number of them carrying the West Nile virus,” said Vivek Raman, an environmental health supervisor for the Southern Nevada Health District.
Health officials have also identified six pools in the Las Vegas area that tested positive for St. Louis encephalitis virus, a mosquito-borne disease that can cause fatal inflammation of the brain.

Can’t say I noticed mosquitos either. Maybe there are many people with dirty pools. Not sure where else you would get standing water long enough for them to breed. I don’t think normal chlorinated water would be very ideal.

she's fantastically popular
I googled and she's already sold 46.6 million albums
the Beatles have the record with 183 million units sold - 2nd is Garth Brooks with 157 million - and then Elvis with 139 million

but she has many, many years ahead to catch them

like her or not her popularity is really astonishing

I neither like nor dislike her. She is simply there. I dont get what people want at for tickets to her but I don’t get that for anyone either.

Beatles are more impressive for album sales as there were like 3 billion fewer people in the world then and far more were locked out of the market due to poverty or communism. Otoh people don’t buy albums now like they did then. So I just will go with hard to compare by numbers alone.

I knew one of her most popular songs, or maybe the most popular was "Shake it Off"
and I have watched the vid

I just checked - and incredibly, it has 3.4 Billion - that's Billion with a B views on YT

I don't recall ever seeing anything like on YT before

her incredible popularity is a mystery to me - she is cute and she can sing a little bit - a very little bit

but imo her musical talent compared to other great stars that I've enjoyed is definitely underwhelming

I’d file her under reasonable attractive but not enough that she would get away with a lot in the real world. Though her being out of my generation may affect that. Closest I’ve gotten to seeing her is seeing all the show trucks for her tour in a parking lot

I remember seeing commercials for Ray Stevens albums on TV back in the 1980s. I always thought he was just a Weird Al ripoff and then I learned he actually had a serious music career for a while, too.

I ain't touching that. But it was as big as a nice wedding. They had a string band that I got to chat up and learned how hard it was to translate some of the Bond music to their kind of band. I have done other Bar Mitzvahs but none were "themed."

I'm impressed by the "re-recording" she's doing to make better money on future music sales.
She sings OK. Some songs are catchy, but I doubt I could name any or sing along.

She skews more female audience than anything I can remember. At least since Cyndi Lauper. The whole thing is fun to watch and learn from. Well, I have not learned anything from it but it is fun to watch I guess. She is what I would call "junk food media" as far as I am concerned. Something to give the tabloids something to write about. Lucky for me nobody at my office seems to care about her.

Whats crazy about Taylor Swift is that most of her 1.4 billion dollar networth is from making music and touring. Most of her peers that are billionaires made their networth from clothing brands, alcohol brands, cosmetic brands, etc. Taylor swift has become a billionaire from just being an artist

As far as figuring out the value of Swift songs, I'd probably check what artists actually decide to cover her songs. (over a period of years)

She made a ton of money on the ERAS tour. This is how it was reported "The singer reportedly made $200 million from the sale of t-shirts, sweatshirts, and other items emblazoned with her name and logo from the concerts alone. That figure is in addition to the $1 billion she brought in from ticket sales".

Technically she made most of her fortune from music, as with any sustained megastar reality likely more a result of a carefully crafted social/political/role-model status than anything.

Not to go Kanye but…..as a non fan of either pretty much looks to me as if she’s “if Beyoncé was white.”

she's fantastically popular

I'm impressed by the "re-recording" she's doing to make better money on future music sales.
She sings OK. Some songs are catchy, but I doubt I could name any or sing along.
The daughters and ex-girlfriends seem to like her.

I have never heard one of her songs that I know of. I could barely pick her out of a lineup and that's only because I saw her when the Super Bowl was on. She has a net worth of over a billion dollars, yet she seems to have no talent except showing off her body. She's like the group KISS, she has merchandise and her name in every conceivable category she makes money from a hundred different directions. I never liked KISS either and cannot name a single song they ever did. Yet thanks to Gene Simmons they still make millions every year because he's a merchandising genius.

I had to look up some Taylor Swift songs, to ease my curiosity.

"We are Never Ever getting back together", "Blank Space", and "Shake it off" topped the familiarity list.

As for KISS, "Detroit Rock City"?

LOL "she seems to have no talent"

Definitely the stupidest take of the day.

I mean, Taylor Swift is definitely attractive and has a nice body, but there is a zero percent chance she would be where she is today if that's all she had going for her.

I think EB should provide us all with HIS list of "talented" performers. That way we all will know where he sets HIS "talent" bar. His posts about notable people most always seem to be on the negative perspective.

EB's alternative universe doesn't recognize time, talent, gambling probabilities, nor some universal realities. Knowing about his perspective should put posters on a path to reconsider that debate is folly.

I don't have cable and I never it listen to my car radio. If I heard it I didn't know what it was and paid no attention to it but I doubt if I did. I'm very recluse when it comes to what's going on in modern culture, even most of the movies I watch now are from the 1940s and '50s. So many good movies that I've never even heard of before.

That's easy. Frank Sinatra first and foremost. Some Dean Martin, some Willie Nelson, some Luciano Pavarotti, that's really about it. If I listen to music at all it's going to be classical, it's been my fave since I was a teenager. I even went to see Frank Sinatra in I think 1977 at Caesars. One of the most disappointing experiences I've ever had. It was a dinner show so the customers were half in the bag by the time Frank came out with his orchestra and the people around me we're singing along with Frank so loudly they drowned him out. They were singing just as loudly as he was but because they were right next to me I couldn't hear a damn thing from Frank. I wanted to kill them, I literally wanted to kill them I hated them so much.

I could. Sinatra, Martin, and Nelson were pretty much one dimensional. They just sang although Nelson could play guitar. I, too, saw Sinatra in Vegas at a dinner show, and he was awful and annoying as he continually tried to lead his orchestra while performing. He just sang with some pathetic banter. For me, the absolute greatest all around performer was Sammy Davis Junior. His audiences would not let him leave the stage. He was just brilliant (singing, dancing, played five instruments, and just tore it up.

Being a "recluse," shouldn't mean burying one's head in the sand and being oblivious to so much incredible talent that is available for viewing and enjoying in one's cave. Closing one's mind and being isolated is a choice to be re-examined. To me, that is really sad.

Taylor is not even close to a top tier Vocalist or performer (see below) Cheap art sells
and sells cheaply She is the queen of catchy hooks.

A Van Gogh could be hanging next to a modern abstract print for a couple
dollars each in a dollar store which would sell the most?

Today most all the top pop female performers are taught the same Cheesy sexualized dance moves
have the same cheesy backup dancer routine.
It's Cheap sugary cookie cutter manufactured art sold to the masses (Women and young girls in this case) and they love it.

Note the cheesy dancing and simplistic vocals and the crowd loves it. The heavy cheese starts at 2min

Here is some examples of Vocal talent that far exceeds Taylor it may not be what you want to listen/like but
for comparison of vocal talant it serves well.

Willie Nelson is widely considered one of the greatest Country singers and songwriters of all time and has released 75 albums in his career. I'm not sure what else you would want him to do for you to consider him "talented."

Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin "just sang?"

Okay.

Rembrandt "just painted."

Daniel Day Lewis "just acted."

Michael Jordan "just played basketball."

What a bunch of one-dimensional no-talent hacks.

I saw Willie live twice
He headlined the Merlefest music festival one year
Opened for Bob Dylan when they did a tour of minor league ball parks one year
I found his sets to be uninspiring and boring
I audio taped both shows and never listened to the performances again
Never really interacted with the aud
The performances seemed like a let's get this over with shows. No real effort. Just run through a bunch of songs and get off stage.
By the way, Sinatra puts on a real good show. I have some recordings
