You should take a trip to Biloxi. They're crawling with WH's. You can literally stand in the parking lot of one and see the next one down the road.Quote: DRichThat is how I look at In-N-Out. I don't think it is anything special just another burger joint but I hear all the time people are coming out west just to go to In-N-Out.
Personally, I am a Waffle House man. A few times a year I am in a city that has a Waffle House and I will go every time. What can be better than betting with a buddy on whether your waitress will have more teeth or tattoos?
I like sitting at the counter and watching the show!
As for Chik-fil-A, the food is OK -- I like the chicken, but the waffle fries are meh. What stands out to me is the service. CFA's seem to have 3x as many employees working than any other ff restaurant of similar size. And they are very customer oriented: fast, friendly, and they make sure you are satisfied. They will actually ask which condiments you would like for drive-thru orders and put them in the bag. The employees genuinely seem to like working there. I don't see this level of service at any other ff joint, at least not consistently.

When I spent a month in Biloxi I think there were 8 WH’s between Harrahs and I think Treasure Bay casino. It’s only 5.5 miles between those casinos.
I'm super picky when it comes to hamburgers it used to be my favorite food. I don't like super fancy hamburgers, especially the ones that have big nasty chunk of meat(under 2 oz is just fine) and they start adding a bunch of crazy crap to them.Quote: PokerGrinderI don’t get the In-N-Out craze. Waffle House is the best. I’ll always choose Waffle House for breakfast if there is one where I am.

I just want an old-fashioned Mom and Pop normal hamburger. Lightly Toasted Bun, with light seasoning, lettuce tomato onions and some kind of special/secret hamburger sauce/spread/goop on it.
Up until about the early 90's I used to find places like that all over. Even some of the fast food restaurants weren't bad. Nowadays they're all mostly flavorless as if they have boiled all the flavor out of them. I have tried a ton of different places all the normal Five Guys and Smashburger type places and some obscure places. When traveling if I see you hamburger shack on the side of the road or purposely stop and try their hamburger and for the most part they're all crap to me.
In and Out is about the only place around that I can find that has a consistently good burger with a great taste. They do have a habit of over toasting the bun sometimes. Next time you go there ask for a cheeseburger with a lightly Toasted Bun, raw chopped onions and extra spread. I have no idea why I seem to like raw chopped onions on my burger but I do. And the service is absolutely great at in and out. I've only had my order slightly wrong one time out of perhaps 50 or 75 x and not once has anybody been less than extremely friendly and nice. If you don't order a drink and they notice you have what no actually asked you if you would like a cup of ice for your drink.
There used to be a good place downtown on Fremont Street that had good burgers I don't know when it's shut down but unfortunately did.
There used to be a privately owned Dairy Queen near Decatur and Meadows Lane near the high school here in Las Vegas that did it the old-fashioned way and it was really good, unfortunately that's no longer around.
Waffle House. Great place. I used to eat there (ain't nobody gonna eat my eggs or even feed them to their dogs). Gave gambling advice at Waffle House and added to one waitresses bankroll when she was casino bound, After someone got shot and killed trying to rob the place, I stopped going there.

I have spent a lot of time in the Gulfport/Biloxi area openning casinos. I think I have been to a Waffle House in every state that they are in. I'm not kidding, if there is a Waffle House nearby I am going. I travel five or so times a year and I map out the Waffle Houses near where I will be staying. Imight be a little obsessed.
Heck, about 20 years ago I tried to get the Waffle House franchise for Las Vegas, Sadly, to this date we still don't have any Waffle Houses and the closest one is in Phoenix, 283 miles from my house. On a few occassions I have driven down just to go to Waffle House and driven back after eating two meals there.

I have never had a problem asking someone how many tattoo's they have but I havevnever asked about the teeth. Usually the winner is apparent as meth teeth are very common amongst the Waffle House waitresses.

You have to sound sophisticated.
Pray tell, m'lady, but how many teeth in thy gaping maw hast thou?
It costs the same or less compared to BK or McDs which are worse than dog food. And it's just as fast. And with better service (because they treat the employees well).
It's not a Porsche. But it is a carolla when you are expecting to get a Yugo.

Then you need to stop at Peggy Sue's Diner on the way back from Cali. Their hamburger is just like what was common back in the 70's. Simple but fantastic at the same time. If I was blind folded I could have been convinced that my dead grandmother was in the kitchen making the burger. I literally had a flashback when eating there the first time.
Yes, it has good food at reasonable prices. And yes, I'd recommend it to hungry travelers. The trouble is that between eating at the restaurant, visiting the gift shop and seeing those damn dinosaurs in back, we end up spending 2-3 hours there. I can't help thinking that if we had just grabbed some drive-through burgers at Barstow Station I'd already be sitting at a UTH table. But it's evidently become a family tradition and my wife and kids outvote me three to one.
Damn dinosaurs.
stopped at three Waffle-Houses on a recent excursion: All young, attractive waitresses. no tattoos visible and I would think none likely because they can't afford them.Quote: DRichI have never had a problem asking someone how many tattoo's they have but I havevnever asked about the teeth. The thing that irritates me about modern hamburgers is the bun. They've gone insane with heavy kaiser rolls or thick sourdough or whatever. I like a thin, plain roll. If I order a Big Mac, i throw away the top, turn over the middle (because it's plain underneath ), and make it much tastier without all that dough, and (bonus!) 100+ calories less.
In fact, there was a Subway that was a planned stop for a couple years. I started having them dig out the inside of the roll before they put the ingredients on. Much, much better. Think I'll start doing that more places. Might be too annoying, though. I'd prefer not to get a spit burger. I can toss or dig out the extra bread myself.

Waffle House does not franchise. All stores are corporate owned. We checked into it a couple years ago. If they franchised, I believe I'd own 3 by now.
I have Been there. I'm foggy about what I had, but I think it was the hamburger. Whatever it was that I had... I didn't really like it. I avoided the place every since. Let's get this straight. McDonald's "hamburgers" are not hamburgers. They are McDonald, you go to McDonald's because you want the McDonald's tast or you just want something cheap and fast. I don’t mind McDonalds sometimes the Big mac's are kinda tasty.
Assuming it's a good hamburger I like I could eat it everyday and love it each time. From about 1990 to about 1992 I ate a hamburger at least once a day for that entire time(I guess there's a chance I skipped a few days) .
When I was younger living in Washington there was a bunch of different places that had really good burgers in the area I lived. Bill and Bee's in Centralia Washington was one of the best. Family owned and by all the hot granddaughters.
Sometimes I'll go for 2 week's + every day to In And Out.

Yeah but have you ever had a proper burger, made with a hoagie roll, cheddar cheese, extra salt, and an egg in the middle?

Indian food and sushi, I could easily live on that.
Scanning a few of these posts about "hamburgers" it is quite clear that you people are referring to completely different items.Quote: onenickelmiracleI find hamburgers so boring and too messy.
Some burgers are tall because they are filled with various items. Some burgers are short.
Some burgers are drippy because of the manner the patty is prepared and the types and quantities of various condiments.
Some patties are compressed during preparation and heating.
Some burgers actually are famous for the amount of grease and the necessity that they be held in waxed paper; some you can actually put your fingers on the bun.
I don't know if burger or hamburger are defined terms or not, perhaps the FTC has dealt with this already.

My favorite fast food sandwich is the regular Arby's roast beef. There is an Arby's two blocks from my house and I have only been there twice in the last five years. I am cheap and they are more expensive than I like to pay.

I don't get it either. Tried them
in Vegas several times and they
are just like every other burger
joint. Reminds me of the 70's
when they didn't sell Coors
east of the Rockies. People
who had tried it raved about how
good it was. When I moved
to Calif and had it, tasted like
like nothing, almost flat.
New place opened up by me called Burgerim. Looks like their schtick is a smaller burger (a bit bigger than a slider). Will be trying them soon. https://www.burgerim.com/
I love a good burger. I’m a raw onion, pickle and ketchup type. I think Shake Shack is good for fast food. McDonalds on a road trip is fine though tastes nothing like I remember from my youth.
My favorite burger is the one I grill at home. Use a mix of beef (80% or fattier), pork and veal. Mix in some garlic, jalapeño, and shredded cheddar (and sometimes onion) into the meat. 5.5 oz patty. Salt and pepper it right before you throw it on the grill.
I do enjoy Wendy's Pretzel rolls on occasion.

Coupons, dude. They come in your mail once a month, oversized page. About 15 meals a month.
For $12, for example, you get 2 roast beef sandwiches, 4 sliders, 4 small fries, and 2 orders of 6 mozzarella sticks or jalapeño poppers.
Greek gyros (good ones!) Are 2 for 5 or 2 for 6. This is my favorite from them. Roasted seasoned Lamb and beef shaved, feta cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, onions and z sauce on a pita. One is probably equivalent portion to 2 regular roast beef. They're substantial.
Reubens are 2.99.
Free shake with any sandwich.
Roast beef 2 for 4 or 3 for 5.
And the coupons are multiples. Like on RB 2 for 4 above, you can order up to 6 on the same coupon, for 12 sandwiches. I throw them in the freezer in plastic - they warm up great.
My mom's go to food, it's 6 blocks away. I'm there at least once a week, with coupons.
Still crazy amount of food for $12.

I always find it amusing the price differences between the same fast food chain in Canada and the USA.
I'm curious how the prices are different. I'm sure I must have eaten ff in Canada, but that would have been 25 years ago, and I certainly would not remember the prices. What does a Beef 'n' Cheddar go for north of the border?Quote: PokerGrinderI always find it amusing the price differences between the same fast food chain in Canada and the USA.
ETA: Dam. Now I want a Beef 'n' Cheddar, but the only Arby's near my office closed several years back.
In the states $5 gets you 20 McNuggets, in Canada they are $11 which is down from $14 a couple of years ago.
The food standards are higher in Canada so prices are always higher.

Maybe they do different coupons for different areas but my coupon was for 2, not one, mozzarella sticks. I'd post a pic, but I used the coupon last week so it's gone. Took us 3 Days to eat it all.
