Understatement of the year.

Lol. He would post these in the group chat. I really liked them, but I thought maybe his only hope of exposure was some weird artsy types liking them too. Turns out he has a mainstream hit.

I meant to link before. Should be fairly obvious I have no financial incentive to do so. Just in case anyone else likes em.

He does it as a hobby. But I guess he is starting to make a little. One of his images is going to be on a book cover, for example.

He works at the city dump.

There is decent money to be be made in the Toy Soldier hobby. I know several men who paint individual soldiers and sell them on eBay or on websites. Making custom figures and battle scenes can be very lucrative. Once you have the process down , you can buy material for pennies and sell them for $10-30 a pop. I dropped by a train show in Sierra Vista to promote my new shop and met a guy selling custom made Buffalo Soldiers. I'd never seen a black toy soldier before and was curious how they would sell. A small sample but he sold out at what was ,by consensus, a slow show.
A guy in SoCal advertises custom yard dioramas that can cost up to and exceed $10,000. Another artist will make a custom 12 inch soldier from any photo you give him, along with service info.
The difference between fiction and reality is that fiction is supposed to make sense.

Injured employee who spoke to reporters has been detained by immigration.

I'm tired of witnessing ambulance chasers. My Family has been here since 1955. I live in the baddest part of the country according to Thomas J Henry and Texas Monthly. When I was mowing, I saw a nurse lightly rear ended walking around. Then she got back into her car and had the ambulance put her on a stretcher. I've seen it alot. It holds up traffic.

The juries here are known to be unfair to corporations and inflate awards to people who arent even injured. Tort Reform has called this place a "judicial hellhole."

I respect people who immigrate legal or illegally to come to work. But there are too many criminals waiting to get caught and let go to work again sometimes as repair men. Locksmith charged us $450 to replace a deadbolt when I was out of town. Charged someone else $600 for a door handle. This is the biggest lock smith co. in town. And the man had a strong spanish accent. Ppl call our family stingy bc i didnt let my elderly parents go bankrupt. Losing 1.5 mil over 5 yrs. a couple workers got really mad and confronted me bc i didnt want to pay 200 per repair to repair per door knob etc. that i fix myself. Same workers dont report warning lights. And broken safety devices.

An employee we later learned is M13, got angry at our supervisor for no reason and quit. Walked out to the dock and swung at another driver that was 2/3 his weight. The driver took him to the ground and said "do you give up." The dirtiest lawyer in town has a case against us for beating up his client who took the first swing. Witnesses agree with us and two came to give a deposition. Our lawyer tried to get my witnesses to side with the other side to see if we were lying. My witnesses stood firm. I have the texts of the star witness as his testimony because he is scared. Cop told me that M13 doesnt come as far as south Texas. They are all over the country and 10k gang members are soldiers learning how to fight.

We fired a gang member. He was ignoring every managers texts and phone calls. I never even got mad at him. I walked onto the dock and saw him listening to my rings and put his phone away. He would come 1.5 hours late to an appt. He was insubordinate and spreading rumors and damaging and hiding dismantled plumbings and leave ppl complaining for new equipment sitting at the office for a month. So we get 6 drive by shootings that the gang member predicted. Cops don't want to make a report, even with spent shells on the street. Workers witnessed him move 4000 pounds of stolen cooking oil by truck in one day. We could have controlled the embezzlement issue later. I told my side of the story to the worker’s ex wife who is also related to organized crime. It has been a week and we don't see 10 cars / day drving through our parking lot anymore. Our office is secluded outside of town. It is not easy for even my bookkeeper and parents to find the entrance after all these years, she almost passed the entrance when she drove me.

The cops let criminal records drive with no license and no insurance and no ticket.

News media has called this place the dirtiest cops in America.

When I hear people come from across the country to live here. I think, "what were you thinking." It may take years but you will see how the system is broken.

Sam Kane beef was top 10 in the country in business for 50 years. Now bankrupt. Its the people who work for you that will destroy companies. A burger King manager worked for us just before all of them went bankrupt. She said everyone was in on it all the way up to the highest position except the owner who fled to florida. Eligios was successful for 50 years. the owner cooked into his elder years til they closed. One day, there was a sign for non payment of taxes on the closed restaurant. He had lots of customers.

By the way, when someone tells you that most of the casinos theft is internal, I believe it. We had 20 boxes of french fries stolen in one day. We get informants calling us that our food is ending up in other restaurants.

About 5% of our food goes missing consistently. workers at the plant blame the driver and vice versa. 5% is enough to destroy a company. Idk which helps more controlling theft or doing my own repairs. Our acct blamed most of our money went to ac and plumbing repairs until I took over.

Over five years we spent 50k to hire techs to replace all the parts to our office freezer including replacing the compressors 3 times. it never worked below 40. i got my certification in 2 weeks. found the freon low on day 1. decreased temp 10 degrees for the 1st time in 5 yrs. 6 months later found a leak that a novice should have caught. I fixed it myself bc another tech failed to seal the leak 6 months ago. He covered the leak with new insulation. It is now 10 -20 degrees farenheit for the first time in 5 years. The techs here will walk out on fixable freezers and do nothing. They will even refuse to servcie us. 4 ac co. and 4 auto shops refused to service us. 5th tried to cheat us for the 2nd time. Fot the last 2 years, I drive 200 miles to austin to get thermoking and isuzu service. I never found a situation that I couldn't handle with 2 weeks of HVAC training. We used to have vandalism by other AC techs. Someone wired our freezer defrost heater to run 24 hrs I've been locking control panels and gates. AC techs also steal freon. We found our copper lines cut. Nothing to gain except hatred. For so many years we over paid AC techs. A tech found nothing wrong with our system, it was a temporary partial power outage. Power came back on in less than an hour. He charged us $400 for showing up.

We have the lowest prices in town, but we are notorious for being greedy. Our property manager said that our tenant said that our whole family is "greedy." He brought my mom into the conversation. She wasn't even aware that I hired the manager. We were charging 35 cents per square foot for air conditioned office space and we paid for all the repairs and electricity. We have the lowest restaurant prices in town. We are demonized by a fraction of the cops. We had rumors that we broke labor laws of hiring underage, shaving hours. The audit uncovered nothing. thank god, our bookkeeper kept good records. It was a witch hunt. Actually, we've been cracking down on time card fraud using the new surveilance cameras. Occassionally, People would have their friend clock them in and be gone all day.

I ran into a jogging friend that I haven't seen in 20 years. He is a cop. He probably hears alot of lies among his comrades about us. That we are drug dealers for 35 years etc. We've never had a criminal record except that fake wreckless driving ticket. I was goin the limit. Our family has 20 bad cop stories, like false traffic report, fake ticket, harrassment, etc. I've donated to widow cops fund 4 times. They don't keep track of that. He was racist before he became a cop and a bully. I was going to offer free ac work. But he always said i never had work experience. I worked overtime since i was 11. He told my driver that he knew us before he gave him a ticket. I never had a good cop friend. Only bad ones. I think my bros murder was covered up on day one bc my bro had a foreign name but he was born in the usa

I believe tx is the most racist state in the US including minority races

Yeah. You can't sell this business?

Dad is crazy. He has never entertained the idea to sell. There were serious offers. Or he should just close and sell the land. He exploded when I told him in 2008 that I wanted to find another job. I left town in 2010 to start another business. It wasnt card counting. But card counting is appealing too . But I came back in 2013 because I was worried about the condition of the family business and their elderly state. I consulted an estate lawyer. Lawyer said that making bad decisions is not mental incapacity. I can not stop them legally from destroying their bank acct. Except by helping maintain the business. Actually. My dad is dementia. But my mom follows my dad and never was involved in the business until now and making alot of mistakes. I cant legally take the co. From her I have to wait til they die. I've told them straight about what I think. He has me totally immersed into the business. I've given up every endeavor in my life, social, occupation, and hobbies. I stopped jogging 3 years ago. The last two days I started exercising again. I finally made an exercise rm that the cats can't play around the equipment which is dangerous.

Its 50% chance now that im ac certified. The lawsuits are what i fear most. I see overt hatred from a few ex workers. Id prefer my parents leave the city. Even if they sell the business, they are targeted outside of the business. That is another chapter i havent gone in to.

Apparently it’s not uncommon to use duct tape for various aspects of airplane maintenance.

I remember several years ago some investigative news show like 20/20 or something did a whole expose’ on duct tape maintenance and people lost their minds.

My dad who is an amateur pilot said it’s common. He never worked commercial though, and he’s a little crazy, so maybe BBB could provide some insight.

duct tape will fix almost anything. Except for ducts, ironically. Never use duct tape on your air ducts.

A while back in this thread we discussed being poor and does money make you happy. As short as 18 months ago we were broke ass people. Every expense was an issue. I know it appeared we traveled a lot and did a lot but it took seriously fanangleing. When we first started this business anytime I had to buy for the office and get reimbursed it was a hardship. Every part of spending money caused stress.

I have been reflecting while on this flight. I recall a few people saying money isnt the solution, but money really does solve some things. I am on a business trip that is going to cost a few grand. Last year I got an advance for expenses and was still tight. This year I did not take an advance and have no worries about it. Taking a client to lunch tomorrow and told them to pick any place. I couldn't care less about what it costs. (Within reason)

Sure money doesnt buy happiness but it sure solves the stress that goes along with being poor. By all means we are not rich and are probably still in the lower income brackets compared to a lot of people on here but we no longer have stress about money.

However what it does create is the ability to stress about other things. There is always something to have to worry about I am just grateful that having $1.78 in my account is no longer one of them.

For some of you that are reading this and are currently in the same place that I was 18 months ago; I feel your pain. If you are working hard and looking for ways to better yourself you will also get to a better place. There is always hope.

Congrats GWAE. You had the fortitude to go out on your own and not just stay an employee and it sounds like it is working out well for you. Too many people are scared to take that chance.

The only time I did that it was somewhat forced. The company I was working for went bankrupt and closed down with no warning (employees came to work and there were guards at the door sending everyone away). That made it easier for me to go out on my own because I didn't have anything else lined up. Sadly that business only lasted about five years,

It's not duct tape. Except it is, in a way. It's called "speed tape". It has a special adhesive and material that are made to aviation standards, are airtight, and are airworthy for small dents, rips, punctures, and other fuselage and wing mishaps. It's not used on glass or some other surfaces, like fan blades. It's never used to seal something shut, like if a cargo hatch lock is malfunctioning, they can't just tape it up.

You would not believe how often the food carts, baggage handlers, or the jetways bang up the hatches or sides of the plane. Or how often birds hit the leading edges of the wings and dent them.

When they use it, they have to make sure the leading edge (as the plane flies) is stuck down super-tight so the air flows properly past it. Otherwise it's just like duct tape. I doubt there's an airliner flying today that doesn't have some on it.

Haha yes. We did hit some crazy turbulence coming into seattle. Glad the duct tape worked.

Fyi, seatac is a.complete mess. They are rebuilding and they are unloading on to the ground, loading you into a bus, and taking you to the other side of the airport. It took an hour from touchdown to baggage.

Seattle, Atlanta and Vegas are my least favorite airports, but my friends who used to travel 132K miles in a year and once had to travel 22000 miles on just one trip can tell horror stories about some foreign airports.

how easy it is to get hacked
a CNN reporter challenged a hacker to hack him

from the article:

"Without having my password, and without hacking into my email account, she was able to get my home address, my phone number and steal my hard-earned hotel points. In perhaps the cruelest act of all, she was even able to change my seat on my five-hour flight out of Vegas, moving me from a spacious exit aisle to a middle seat at the back by the restrooms."

Seattle, Atlanta and Vegas are my least favorite airports

I've never flown into Seatac, but I have no problem with Atlanta. Yes, it's huge, but it's pretty easy to move around in it. Although it is quite a hike if you have to go from one end of a terminal to the other. McCarran is OK until you have to go through baggage claim. The times I've been there, that place is a zoo!

My favorites are the small airports. For a while, my best option for getting to Champaign, IL was to fly into Bloomington, IL, rent a car and make the 40 Mi drive. Loved flying in/out of BMI. You walk out of baggage claim, and you are immediately in the rental lot!

The best experience I had was flying out of Flagstaff, AZ. I had just gotten my first job out of college, and my sister and I decided to take our parents on a Grand Canyon vacation. Unfortunately, as I had just started my job, I had accrued very little vacation time, and I had to cut my part short to get back to work.

So, I'm sitting with my family in the hotel lounge a couple hours before my flight. It comes time to leave, and this guy in the bar says he drives a cab and offers to take me to the airport. I accept and he drops me at the airport. When I get to the ticket counter, who do I see? The cabbie from the bar! Evidently he was a ticket agent as well. Then I go to board the plane, and who takes my ticket? Yup, the cabbie!

The flight to Phoenix was enjoyable as well. Out of the 20 or so people on that flight (small plane -- only 1 seat on either side of the aisle), 5 were pilots (including the 2 flying the plane). One was a WW II pilot, the guy behind me was some sort of pilot, and there was a pilot in training in the front row. The cool thing was that they left the door (or was it just a curtain?) open so the student pilot could see what the pilot & co-pilot were doing. This also meant that the passengers could see out of the front of the plane, a perspective that commercial passengers rarely have the opportunity to see.

I always thought Las Vegas was a pretty easy airport to navigate. Atlanta is huge but also relatively easy.

Seattle area is weird with gas. Prices range from 3.29 to 3.99. I guess it depends on reservation owned? How do the high priced ones stay in business.

Pittsburgh it is 2.67

People prefer convenience over price. One of the companies that I work for has 120 gas station / convenience stores. They are the highest priced in the city but also the busiest. Our company sells more than a half a million gallons a day.

The average person puts about 8 gallons in their tank at a time. The breaking point from my experience is about 25 cents for most people.

If McDonald's tasted like it did in the 80s(especially their Quarter Pounders) I would be eating there all the time and if they had their deep fried apple pies...forgetaboutit.

I've heard that in the Middle East McDonald's has falafel on their menu. McFalafel or something like that. I wish they had that here.

And you don't have to pay the salaries of the two pilots. My company has a few jets and the expenses are huge. Hangar, mechanic, pilots, fuel, insurance, etc. I too would look at a Netjets or one of their competitors. The last timeI looked I think you canbuy into Netjets for about $250,000 a year.
