Yup, those click bate people are very clever in getting peoples attention

I don't know about Wikipedia but I have been sucked down youtube rabbit holes
Was on youtube and saw video of a fight between fans at a football game. Pretty crazy
Then youtube sees you watched that and put similar videos links on the right.
YouTube kind of saying if you like this video, will love the next one as they automatically load
After a while I look up and see I've been on youtube for an hour, lol

Owning a house is good for your kids future when you pass away. Land and property is how wealth is built. I'm Just now sure how much your stuff will be worth in 2 years (-;Quote: GWAEUggg left work early to find water dripping from the middle of kitchen ceiling. Bathroom is right above. No water or sign of water in bathroom. Went in crawl space where pipes are and nothing is wet. Only place it can be is where pip is in the ground for toilet. Not sure what to do other than pull up floor to look. We also had some rain storms last night so I guess it is possible for water from the outside but I cant find any evidence of that either.

The s%$# ain't worth anything now let alone in 2 years. They are screwed.
I didn't look at GWAE's list (yet) but there's a whole subculture called, I think, "Urban Explorers" who go into abandoned areas, buildings, factories, etc. and take pictures. It's been a while, but I used to read about that too.
Even though I don't believe in conspiracies, aliens, paranormal, etc. I love reading about them.
In short, I've spent lots and lots of time in them rabbit holes.
I wouldn't really say it's a waste of time. You're actively engaged at least. Better than watching TV.
Quote: RigondeauxI've spent countless hours on wiki doing stuff like reading about the lives of all of the Little Rascals or old timey baseball players.

I agree it's not always a waste of time. There have been plenty of things that I know now from these things. Definitely better than the crap my wife watches on facebook.

I haven't watched any TV, movies, or videos in 7 days. For me, vacations are all about doing nothing. Back to the grind of work on Tuesday.

While I never post anything on Facebook I will say it is a net positive on my life. I post a link on the myvegas thread yesterday for a free 2.5 billion chips. Would have never known about it without Facebook. I also have gotten a few great Vegas deals that I found on facebook.

I watch TV, movies, or videos during the grind. If its slow working from home, why not.
My job is feast or famine, either I am real busy or nothing to do

You are funny. Imagine you put $400,000 in a box in 2006. Now it is 2019 and the box is worth $380,00. Did you build wealth?
Last time I looked, half the houses in the Valley were worth less in 2018 than they were in 2007. The Dow has gone from mid teens to mid twenties. Gold has jumped from $400 an ounce to well over $1,000. Meanwhile, a person with a paid off house in 2007 has not seen a dollar of appreciation in their biggest asset in over a decade.
Diversification is a way you build wealth. Multiple income streams without being dependent on any one. Home ownership is a honey trap for many people.
Quote: TigerWuI recently rewatched Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The decor and style is so awesome yet so awful at the same time. Did Vegas really look like that in 1971?
There is a James Bond movie filmed in Circus Circus in the early to mid 70s. I haven't seen it in years but it has a lot of scenes filmed in and around the casino. Diamonds are forever?

depends on the area I suppose. My parents bought their house in 1997 for $62k. It is a 3 bedroom ranch on a decent sized cul de sac lot. they were assessed at 219k a few years ago for taxes but a similar house up the street sold for 285k last month.
We bought our house for 85k 6 years ago in the number 5 school district in the state. The average house in this school district sells for over 500k. Our house is a 2 bedroom smallish house with an acre of land but it sits on a hill with a really crappy driveway which is what kept the price down. We could probably sell our house today for 110k without a problem since we did some land improvements. in 10 years I bet the house will be near 150.
If you want to cherry-pick the year of purchase then I don't know what to say. I could come back with...what if you bought in 2012 or let's go back to 1940. Prices may go up and down, however, over the long run, the value of real estate seems to go up. There are many other benefits as well.Quote: billryanYou are funny. I am open to hearing why owning your own house and investing in real estate is a bad idea, under normal circumstances.
And if you are there for the long haul, it doesn't matter that much what the market price is at a given moment. You got a place you like and you'll hopefully wind up owning it.
Bought at 150k 2003
Went down to 100k during the housing crisis
Currently Zillow has me at 242k

So in 16 years, it's gone up 65%. Stocks have gone up 400% since then. 150K in 2003 would have grown to about 600K. Even if you had been paying $1,000 a month for rent, you'd have about $400,000 in cash with no debt. You have something worth 242K if you can get that price. Expect a bit less, minus whatever you still owe. How many years are left on your mortgage?
As you said, you did ok. But you could have done better. Had you rented until now under the circumstances described, you could buy your house today for cash and have $150,000 in the bank, or hopefully invested in things that will grow.
Real estate can be a great way to build wealth. Just not a single family home, bought to live in.
And in only 10 years BTC has gone up about 7,000 percent. And You didn't even have to buy it, you could have just used a PC and mined a bunch.Quote: billryanSo in 16 years, it's gone up 65%. I would guess that real estate is much safer than the market. People probably understand real estate better than the market and they have something that they can touch, feel and use.
Don't forget, Trump will eventually destroy the economy, so it's probably better to own some land and a house than some worthless stocks.

*if your mortgage payment isn't more or much more than paying rent, that's a nice starting position for the argument for buying. If you haven't been a renter for a while, think back to those days when they kept raising the rent too. A mortgage payment stays the same excepting things added to it like real estate tax. Yet experts say at times renting is better , at times buying is better.
*you have many expenses with owning your home, making it hard to compare to other investments
*you have enormous leverage when you have a mortgage. You can't buy $400k worth of stocks and say "here's my 10% or less down" for it like you can with a mortgage. And a mortgage is immune to margin calls unlike buying stocks on margin - nor is the interest ever low like a mortgage can be. This is what leads the guy who owned his home for 40 years to say "best investment I ever had" even when the return maybe only matched inflation - the leverage was the key to the whopping profit.
However, Zillow lists it as over 40% higher than the appraisal value, and replacement value for insurance purposes is over 70% higher than appraisal value.
In other words, I have no idea what our house is worth.

My experience with buying and selling a couple of homes is that Zillow and Refin are usually about 5%-10% high. I think they do that so you keep coming back to their site and they can sell ads. Obviously every home is different and Zillow is just using a baseline. My current home has a covered and lighted RV/Motorhome parking that no one else in the neighborhood has. When I was considering moving a few months ago I had a couple real estate agents come look at it. The consensus was that the RV parking added $25k or so to the value. Something like that would not be considered by Zillow because none of the other homes in the neighborhood that have sold have it.
I'd use Zillow as a starting point to determine value but it's not so accurate for oversized lots or unusual additions.

I tried finding a hole and couldn't find one. Then when I thought I did I have no idea how deep it is. Owell maybe next time

And in the OR as well for the same reason! Just yesterday surgeon working on a GSW victim had is give methylene blue IV. If you see blue leaking in the abdomen it is a sign a ureter has been damaged. It is weird seeing blue pee.

Very nice. I love the first one especially with the train tracks in the background and the snow on the ground. I could spend all day there fishing and it would only seem like an hour or two.
