Max Schmeling lived to 99, which is surely a record for that troubled profession. His story, like Foreman's is one of the few boxer life stories that is uplifting and not tragic.
I also like the grills. And he had a men's clothing line which I used to buy all the time, intended for those of us who are a little larger than average.
Foreman tried a comeback and incredibly at age 45 regained the Heavyweight Championship in 1994 by knocking out Michael Moorer age 26
he is ranked as one of the greatest heavyweights of all time - he was very, very muscular

Muhammad Ali once said that getting hit by George Foreman was like getting hit by a Mack truck.
Ali got hit very, very hard by Foreman in the early rounds before knocking him out
Ali was hit very hard in the body and sometimes in the face although he covered his face with his gloves most of the time
I watched the fight on pay per view and I was amazed that Ali could take that much punishment
the fight was outdoors in Africa - it was 80 degrees and 90% humidity and George just got worn out towards the end of the fight
it is widely considered to be one of the greatest fights of all time
.
.
He didn't learn his lesson at all. A few years later, he fought in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and he showed up on the day of the fight, not giving his body any time to adjust to the climate or even the time zone difference.
Quote: EvenBobthese fights made a household name out of Howard Cosell.
Foreman was a 3/1 underdog when he fought Joe Frazier
he knocked Frazier down 6 times before the fight was stopped
and 6 times Cosell said,
"Down goes Frazier - Down goes Frazier - and Down goes Frazier"
that was an important part of what led to his fame as a boxing announcer
.
Foreman had only fought once since losing to Ali and Frazier was about to retire and needed a big payday. Fraizer held and grabbed for four rounds, trying to rile Foreman. By the 5h, Foreman had him timed and dropped him twice before Fraizer's manager called off the fight.

You REALLY shouldn't have mentioned Freeda's death in this manner. She died in 2019 and you had me thinking she committed Suicide by hanging herself just days after her Father died as if she wanted to join him in the Afterlife when she died BEFORE him, not AFTER him. Automatic Monkey told me she died years ago and I went to Google and she did in fact die in 2019 and not 2025. 💡

Her death came through one of my feeds. I didn't check the date. The news feed made it seem like it just happened.
Hopefully that's just Google or whatever app seeing I had searched George Foreman death and sending me other related news.
Apologies for the error but like you I heard it fresh for the first time.
So she definitely didn't commit suicide over her father's death. But she did hang herself.

In 1975 HBO was available in four states and had less than 100,000 customers. In 1975 ABC was available to every single television set in the country and that's where everybody saw it. In 1975 I never even heard of HBO and I probably didn't even know what cable was.
I've read Cosell almost accidentally got into broadcasting. He was an attorney for the NYC Little League when a local station wanted to do a weekly LL segment and he took it upon himself to represent them. A few years later, he quit the law to pursue full-time broadcasting. He was one of the few people who stood by Ali's side when his title was stripped and Ali let him broadcast most of his fights when he returned. The Rumble in the Jungle, Superfight 1( ALi-Fraizer1), and the Thriller in Manilla were not broadcast live on television. Ali would fight underweight English boxers or overweight Spanish fighters on tv. He lost his title to Leon Spinks on television, but the rematch was only on closed-circuit.

I see Showtime, just morphed into Paramount just last year.
Ali-Fraizer 1, The Rumble in the Jungle, The Thriller, and most of Sugar Ray Leonard's fights were on closed-circuit.
Larry Holmes-Gerry Cooney fought in Vegas, but Madison Square Garden and the Nassau Coliseum were both sold out for the closed circuit. My friends and I saw the fight in a porn theatre that switched formats for the evening.
Evil Knievel's Snake River fiasco was shown on a closed circuit.

I was working when the announcement of Elvis's death came on the radio. Normally, it wouldn't have meant all that much to me, but he was scheduled to perform a concert at The Nassau Coliseum in a few days, and I was on the list for shape-up workers.
The funny thing is I thought I remembered WPLJ interrupting their first playing of the Deads Terrapin Station for the announcement, but they did that the week before his death.
