Journalistic standards have not taken a hit. Trump would like you to believe that they have, but you have to consider the source for any news source and discern bias in the reporting by looking for key words and phrases that show bias. And you have to go to the background source for reliability. It's easy to do, but people are lazy and just believe sources that back their perception. Reality augmentation.

Semi Regional guy, took EBT at anywhere from .30 to .50 on the EBT $1 depending on what you were getting. I was a unionized county employee for some years and accumulated 700 or so sick hours. It is a RIDICULOUS amount. There is no limit to how many you can accumulate. I think I am limited to accumulating 480 hours of vacation time, but I use my vacation so have a few weeks in the bank. When I retire if I have any vacation time I'll get paid for it, but I'm planning on it being near zero. The sick time basically disappears; I get pension credit time for those hours but no money. It is worth a few dollars an hour. It would make sense for me to call in sick one day a week for the next 85 or so weeks from a purely financial/lifestyle perspective. I just can't get myself to call in sick when I am not. Oh well.

WOW - as you may or may not know - I joined a law firm about 6 months ago - my PTO does not kick in for another few weeks which is 16 days per year - however, I have been told the head of the firm (he owns it - no HR department) very much frowns on anyone using a day off on a Monday or Friday as he feels if someone calls in sick on one of those days they are "faking it" to get a three day weekend - also, I have been told that if you want to call in sick, unless you are in the hospital (with proof), you need to come into the office, tell the boss-man you are sick and then leave (lovely for me considering I commute about 1hr 45mins each way) -- most people just end up staying at work although sick (office manager worked two days last week with a 100+ fever -- I am just waiting to catch whatever she had as she coughed and sneezed her way through the days)

That used to be true,, and people often did . Somewhat recently they changed the sick leave buy-out from 1 for 1 at your base rate to something less, trying to save themselves the big paycheck on retirement. That pretty much backfired on them, because people just started sicking out a lot once they were within range of retirement, in order to get full value of their banked SL.
I'm not sure how it's working now, but they tried to fire back with sick leave abuse discipline after that compensation change, and people trumped that by saying good luck with your ripoff of time I earned, here's my no-notice retirement paperwork. Enjoy spending OT money on my schedule. Etc.
But yeah, it's (was) very popular to retire with 1000+ hours of SL + 240 use or lose + 208 earned that year. You're "working" until Dec 31, but you're gone in, like, April. Sometimes people would take the SL+AL cashout, work their last day, and go out the door with 60k or so in their last check instead.
