Come on dj, you can do it. Just start sprinting between casinos starting tomorrow, and you'll be in perfect shape by April.

I would go one step further and tell him to get burned and be chased by the Security gorillas through the casino.....that should force him to go as quickly as possible :)

But then again, I like DJ, no reason for him to ger burned anywhere :)

I've been working out near-daily since mid-February. I do at least 30 minutes a day, more on weekends. Due to the uncertainty of my work schedule, I'm even working out 7 days a week.

Therefore when I'm on vacation in Vegas I intend to take it easy. There's already plenty of walking involved in that (I think I walk a solid hour every day in vegas at the least, more like two on some days, and way more than three on shopping days).

But if you airlift Doc to take the group picture, I'm willing to tag along to hold his camera :)

Good newas, everyone! I managed to block off the right time period for my vacation. Meaning no one else at the department wants to take their vacation from mid-April to mid-May. So I am indeed officially coming.

If anyone wants or needs anything from Mexico, except tobacco (I use up that allowance), be it candy, booze, whatever, PM me and I'll do my best to find it and bring it.

Also I'm wide open for ancillary events or meets from April 21st to May 6th, except for the WoVcon itself, of course, and I've made plans for Thursday the 24th.

Oh yeah a motel/casino right next to the base. Although I can't convince myself what I saw inside was casino like. I played 4 hands of keno and cashed out with a whopping $15 hand pay.....

I have been running around the block doing a tour of Ellis island, and Tuscany. Sometimes I'd run to hooters and trop if I want some variety. Hopefully it'll get me in shape for the hike

Even better news, I paid for my trip yesterday. So barring events or developments of minor probability, I'm all set.

Is anyone planning a WoVCon ]I[.V somewhere? The usual palce is MSS for craps the day before THE WoVCon, but as MSS for craps is the most likely post-lunch gambling activity for this year, well, whoever's planning better do some creative thinking (I'm not planning it, BTW).

This sounds like a good time, maybe next year. Just went to Vegas in January and already have a trip booked for July. April 2015 could be good.

January? July? You're looking at this wrong! Just add April and October and make quarterly trips:-)

I have had a couple inquiries if the Sunday hike is still on. These sounded like serious confirmations so it looks like the hike is on.

As planned, the hike will be Kraft Mountain in Calico Basin. This is about a ten minute drive west of the Red Rock casino in the the Red Rock National Conservation Area.

I'd like to hit the train about 10:00 AM. I am afraid offering a pick up service is beyond my call of duty, but will suggest a couple options more convention to me:

1. You can take the 207 bus to the western terminus at the Westcliff Transit Center. I see from the schedule there is a 9:30 AM arrival on Sundays. This route leaves from downtown once an hour. I'm afraid if you're not on that 9:30 bus then I can't wait a whole hour for the next one.

2. If you have a rental car, then we can meet at the top level of the EAST parking garage at the Red Rock casino. Please note there are two parking garages and I'm suggesting the one closer to the Strip. This meeting will be scheduled for 9:45 AM.

I have a car that seats six comfortably so am happy to drive the rest of the way.

Hopefully we can discuss the details at the lunch on Saturday. Let me know at the lunch if you're planning to go and where you'd like to meet. Perhaps those of you coming from the Strip can carpool.

Finally, I'd like to repeat the warning that this will be a fairly strenuous hike. It will be about five miles total and I will be keeping a pace of at least two miles per hour. In spots you will have to use your hands to scramble up rocks, but nothing too dicey. You should be in good physical condition to undertake this hike.

Can't wait. As I had mentioned to the Wizard previously, I usually get exactly zero exercise while in Vegas. As I'll be in town 5 nights, and I'm actually in a pretty good workout regimen right now, I'm pretty stoked to get in some physical activity.

Also, I just confirmed my rental car reservation; I will plan to meet the Wiz at 9:45 at the top of the east Red Rock parking garage. If anyone needs a ride from the strip, please contact me via PM. If we have more than 6 total (seems unlikely), I'll just drive straight to the trailhead.

Also, I recommend all participants bring at least one liter of water.

This is a post I hoped I wouldn't have to write, but unfortunately I'm going to have to. For those in a hurry, just jump to the end to get to the point.

My father has literally days, perhaps hours, left to live. I just went to visit him on Saturday and arrived home just this morning. While I was there I arranged for a 24-hour home health care service to help our my mother care for him. I stuck around to help my parents ease into having a stranger living there and taking care of my father. Fortunately, we got a very good and caring man and I had planned to hit the road shortly after dinner yesterday.

After a good meal, my father went to sleep, which wasn't unusual. However, this time I could tell it was different. He struggled for air, his hands seemed blue, his forehead was cold yet sweaty, his pulse was fast, his eyes were glassy, and he generally seemed to be slipping away. So, I stuck around. I preferred to just let him go peacefully, if was indeed his time, but my mother was worried and roused him awake. He babbled about some dream he had and said to me, "You're a good son. Live a good life." He then went back to sleep. However, my mother roused him again and managed to get him out of the bed to relieve himself, but my dad was in a daze through the whole thing.

While I felt the end was near, I have no training in such things, and with the pressures of three kids and a business to run back in Vegas, I hit the road last night at 10PM, returning shortly after 2 AM this morning. I said to call me if anything changed, as I'm just a four-hour drive (assuming good traffic) from their house.

About an hour ago I got a call that my father took a turn for the worse and my mother called 911. My father was taken to a nearby hospital to give him comfort get him stable enough to return home. Calling 911 would have been against my wishes, but I wasn't there, and my mother outranks me on the medical Power of Attorney anyway, but that is another story. Suffice it to say that he is in such bad shape that a peaceful death is the lesser of two evils, at least in my opinion.

It is my intention to return home tomorrow and stick around until the end and a few days past that to be there for my mom and help with the matters of his will and estate. This will entail me missing the WoV events this weekend. I very much regret having to cancel, but I think all would agree it is with good cause. As for the hike, rudeboyoi knows the route I was planning, and I would very much hope that the hike goes on and he can lead it.

As for the trivia challenge, I will ask Barb to proctor it. I already wrote the questions so hate to waste them. I'll arrange the prize with the winner after the fact, but it will be along the lines of a WoV polo shirt, Dogs Playing Poker framed print, or cash option.

Please have a great time without me, and know I'm there in spirit.

I recall that when my mother passed away, I re-read Albert Camus' "The Stranger" cover to cover on my plane flight to the East Coast to attend her funeral.

It helped.

A lot.

Do we have a list of the people that are committed for lunch on Saturday? I see the poll says 12 people but I assume that included Mike. So who are the 11 people attending?

Mike, my thoughts are with you at a tough time like this, all the best to you and your family.

And here.

I'm with you on nixing the ambulance to the hospital, then back home thing. On the other hand, your mother will avoid the guilt feelings some get thinking they should have done more.
the next time Dame Fortune toys with your heart, your soul and your wallet, raise your glass and praise her thus: “Thanks for nothing, you cold-hearted, evil, damnable, nefarious, low-life, malicious monster from Hell!”   She is, after all, stone deaf. ... Arnold Snyder

My wife and I will be there for lunch. I will be there for craps, but she will be over at the penny slots.

Much more importantly, my sympathies are with you and your Mom, Mike. I've been through this with both of my parents, as has my wife.
