I collect casino player's club cards and I thought I would start a thread (seconded by Beethoven9th) showing each one that I have and if I remember anything about it, a brief story. If you wish to participate, I suggest blacking out the personal information on the card before posting a picture and making it 600 pixels wide.

Dotty's, Las Vegas, NV, USA

One day about two years ago I felt obligated to go into the Dotty's down near the M Resort and collect a club card. It was nearly empty. I filled out the paper work but the guy behind the counter (who looked surprised to have a customer who wanted a club card) told me that I would have to wait for headquarters to approve and then I would get a temporary card. After 20 minutes or so, they gave me my temporary card. In the mean time, I was playing Caveman Keno for a quarter. Around 15 minutes into the wait, I hit six out of seven numbers and won something like $70 or $80 and I had only put in a $20. So after I received my temporary card, I left and got the real one in the mail about a week or so later.

I've never been there since.

I tried to capture the sparkles in the card but the best I could do with a camera phone is what you see above. In the future, I'll see if I can use a real camera with a lightbox.

I may just scan each one and see how that works out.

That should assure uniformity but it looks a little flat.

My Fallsview card looks like this:

Here's this card's story. I was driving to Toronto right after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. I was supposed to go to New Orleans for Labor Day weekend but since the weather didn't cooperate, I shifted plans and decided to go to Toronto instead. It was too late to get plane tickets so I drove in a Mazda RX-8 from Long Island. I had never been to Niagara Falls and heard that the Canadians stole the best view of the falls from us Americans in some war or another. Once on the Canadian side of the border, I saw signs for Fallsview Casino. I had no idea what that was so I went to investigate. Not only is it a real casino, it has the best view of Niagara Falls.

Only a few....

If you have in mind that this thread will continue for a long while, I think it is best if you start off with a post that details everything that you have in mind for the thread. You can edit it later if the situation changes, but it helps to have the plan and ground rules set up early. Since this thread is already underway, I would suggest that you either edit your first post (if you think that is necessary) or post more details now/soon. Some of the things you might consider are:

(1) If it's going to be a "Card of the Day" thread, maybe it should only include cards from one new casino/club each day. Otherwise, you might as well just give a flurry of your entire collection.

(2) If you want others to contribute and would prefer that they, too, stick to the one card a day plan (or anything else you would like others to do in their replies), say so. Else you will have someone give a flurry of their entire collection, possibly trampling all over your plan.

(3) Are you interested in having other folks just post their own cards or should they also post any card images they can find? At the beginning of the Casino Chip of the Day thread, I asked that people not post images that they had gathered on the web. There are tons of those around, and I only wanted people to post images of chips that they really have. Similarly, there are lots of images on the web of player's club cards, for example in the MOGH catalog. Do you want all of those added to your thread? If not, I think you should spell it out.

(4) Are there a lot of different designs for cards from the same casinos? I know there may be different tiers, but I don't know what other differences to expect. I think it would be more difficult to get a lot of photo responses to a Casino Card of the Day post than we get in the Casino Chip of the Day thread.

(5) Do you have any plan for what sequence to present the cards? Alphabetical? Geographic? Random? You might give an early hint as to what we should expect.

(6) Are you interested in having a directory of the thread, like the one I keep in post #1 for the Chip of the Day thread or the one the Wizard added later for his Spanish Word of the Day thread? It would probably be easier to plan/start that right away.

Good luck with this. I don't have many cards myself, so I don't know whether I will have much of anything to contribute.

Thanks Doc, I'll see what happens as it goes along. I don't have any order in mind. I would like a story with the card image and it should be a card that is in the possession of the poster. A directory would be nice, I'll see what you've done with Chip of the Day and try to duplicate that. If there is more than one card design for a casino, I think they all should be posted as long as the board member is in possession of the card. I'd also like to see cards from casinos that no longer exist. I have a Bill's card that I think I'll post next.

In my first trip to vegas I took a tour to Hoover Dam. The tour ended with lunch at the Sams Town buffet (not particularly notable). We were all given a player's card and a simple form to fill out. Only the cards ahd no names on them, naturally.

By my third trip Boyd had changed its club cards, so I wondered if I should update mine. I asked at the Fremont player's club desk and was told it wasn't necessary. Only the lady three was astonished at seeing a card with no name on it, so she decided to give me a new one. Alas, I didn't keep the old one.

This is nothing terribly special, but here is a Platinum card from MGM/Mirage. During my Vegas visit last year I stayed at the Bellagio on the nights before the G2E. I hadn't played at an MGM casino for 2.5 or 3.5 years. When I went to the player club to obtain a new player card, for some reason they printed it on a Platinum card. I think the reason why is because they show my status as being Pearl, and the Pearl and Platinum cards are similar in color.

The front is sparkly, but the sparkles only show up as dots when being scanned.

Bill's Gambling Hall and Saloon, Las Vegas, NV

This is not a story of beginnings but rather endings. Bill's Gambling Hall and Saloon was located on a little stripe of a lot just south of the Flamingo on the very busy corner of Las Vegas Blvd. and Flamingo Road. Bill's was previously named The Barbary Coast and was a "Coast" casino. Back then, Coast had recently been taken over by Boyd Gaming. Boyd had recently finished the Borgata project in Atlantic City and wanted to do something big in Las Vegas on the Strip. Harrah's swapped some vacant land by the Stardust for The Barbary Coast which gave Boyd a huge contiguous lot on which to build the Echelon project and Harrah's ownership of nearly everything on the East side of the Strip, from Harrah's Casino on south to Paris (The Aladdin/Planet Hollywood would be added to the Harrah's/Caesars empire later). Harrah's renamed The Barbary Coast to Bill's Gambling Hall and for some reason still unknown to me, did not integrate the player's club for the property into the "Total Rewards" program. Your points that you collected at Bill's Gambling Hall went somewhere but I never figured out where.

Bill's was closed on February 4, 2013 for a remodeling. I was staying at The Flamingo that weekend. I knew about the closing and remodeling in the back of my head. I had read about it and perhaps even mentioned it here but once I got to Las Vegas for that weekend, I was concentrating on a lot of other things and forgot about the pending demise of Bills. On the morning of the Super Bowl, I went to make some bets at the sports book in the Flamingo and the line was very long. I was due to eat breakfast with the family so I didn't want to wait on that line. I had an idea. I went to Bill's. I didn't have my player's club card with me, so I went to the desk where they issue them and noticed the signs saying that Bill's would be closing forever the next day. I asked, if I didn't get a chance to cash any winning tickets in before they close, what would happen. They told me that all winning tickets would be honored at any Caesars/Total Rewards property. The sports book at Bill's was nearly empty so after I obtained the card pictured above, I made my bets and went on my way. I cashed in my winners at the Flamingo the next morning, even before Bill's had closed their doors.

Bill's Player's Club, while sucky in and of itself, did do a "Comp Explosion" giveaway everyday for $100 in comp dollars. One time I won, and I didn't know about it until I visited their players club for another promo months later. So I was happy to hear that. It was easy to convert the Bill's comp dollars to Caesars' comp dollars.

I discovered another design for the Bill's card in another stack of club cards I have in my suitcase:

Sorry Doc, I couldn't post an image to save my life. Indeed, I don't even have a digital camera since my phone is old cheapie throwaway.

I do like to carry ALL my cards with me though. When my local Indian Casino had a party of "newcomers" I went and got sloshed having won hands down the respect of my table mates who only had one card.

On the old Gambino Boat (Yeah, that is who used to own it) out of Palm Beach I'd perch my ringful of cards on the rail at the five dollar craps table to reserve my space while I was off feeding my face at the free buffet awaiting our arrival in International Waters. Once, for some reason, I left that wad of cards with the dull orange of The Venetian facing outward and darned if some sharp-eyed passing crew member didn't pick it up and show it to his boss. I then heard something about "they print it right on the card, maybe we should do that too". The name on my Grazie card is FIRSTNAME FLEASTIFF SURNAME. He spotted the bold black capital letters spelling out my rather unusual middle name and thought it had been a comment added by the casino rather than a whimsical request by me.

"Sorry, Doc" ????

For those who haven't been paying attention, this is not my thread idea! All the credit (blame?) belongs to s2dbaker, who is the collector of club cards. I started that other thread about casino chips, and I just made one post here (before this one) offering some suggestions on how he might want to organize such a thread if he anticipates having it go on for an extended period.

They allow the casino to track what a lousy gambler you are by monitoring how much money you dump into a slot machine. If you waste enough money, the casino may grant you a free hotel room between Monday and Thursday.

This one is a short story. I went to check out the new "casino" in Yonkers. I got a card. I played the games and lost. I left and only go back on Kentucky Derby day. I get a lot of useless offers in the mail for Karaoke night and stuff like that. They don't have a hotel, it's merely a racino and a bad one at that. They don't have table games, only class 2 video lottery terminals. Yonkers is the reason I won't go into the other new "racino" at Aqueduct.

Wynn/Encore, Las Vegas, NV

I was really looking forward to getting this card. I used to go to the Bellagio when Steve Wynn ran the joint and I really liked it. Then with the takeover my MGM, the place went flat. When I heard that Steve Wynn had bought the Desert Inn, I had high hopes of another gorgeous casino resort. Then came the Wynn! I arranged a trip to Las Vegas as close to the opening date of the Wynn as I could get. I got there, got my player's club card and promptly lost my gambling budget in his signature slot machine. The bathrooms are marble and granite. I say that you can always tell the quality of a place by the materials that they put in the toilet.

This card is a replacement card. My original card is in pretty rough shape. On it, the "Wynn" signature is nearly all peeled off and you can hardly read the name and card number. I never get any offers from Wynn and I think that's a little disappointing.

Just to put a coda on the Empire City post, I found the original player's club card hidden away where I would never find it. What a terrible design and speaking of terrible, that's a clue to tomorrow's card.

Unlike a convex mirror, things in Las Vegas are NOT closer than they appear. Quite the opposite. I was in Las Vegas staying at the Flamingo. From my hotel room, I saw Terrible's neon lights beckoning to me. I decided to walk on over. It's not something I'll do again. That part of Flamingo Road wasn't made for walking.

The casino truly lives up to its name.

Hmm. I've walked from the Atomic Testing Museum to Terrible's and thence to the Strip. It wasn't a short walk, but I found no difficulty on the road. It's rather hard to cross the street, though, as there aren't as many traffic lights as you might expect.

Anyway, They got the name wrong on the card, but I foget exactly how. I still do have the T-shirt I got for signing up, possibly even the coupon book, too. I'm a bit of a pack rat with trip memorabilia.

Hooters, Las Vegas, NV

When Hooters took over the San Remo, I don't think anyone thought it would last as long as it has. I believe the final curtain will fall soon for the property known for its Owl logo. Seriously! An owl? Who would go to a casino whose logo is an owl? They would have had more success with dirty pillows as their theme. If they had hot chicks in scantily clad orange shorts and halter tops, that might have worked but a stupid owl?

I have to say though in all seriousness that this property is the only one that I consider repellant. I never win there and it's just creepy.

BTW I have one, and only one from a casino in Monterrey , Mexico. Can I just post it, or are you following a meticulous listing like our own lovable Doc? I still ahve to smuggle it into the office to scan it, so it won't be before the weekend.

Post away, I'll add it to the index in post 1 when I see it.

The Palms, Las Vegas, NV

I don't have a story for The Palms. I remember that the first time I went there, I thought that it felt like a cafeteria. The second time, it was a bit improved in atmosphere but since I never get any offers, I don't go.

I have to skip tomorrow as I'll be at Bally's AC without a scanner.

Who's face, if it is a face, is that on the slot machine? Is it supposed to be one of the Maloof brothers?

The first Palms card seems like it was crudely colored with chalk or pastels, which is kind of cute in it's way. The second one looks like the product of some bad acid trip :P

I think the most interesting card I have squirrelled away somewhere
is from Westward Ho.

It doesn't have a magnetic stripe. Instead, there are blocks cut out
of it, I guess similar to the OLD OLD OLD computer keypunch cards
you had to submit as a batch job back in the day !

Wow, how old are those Palms cards anyway?

The top card is like a decade old, the bottom card is 2 or 3 years old.

Bellagio, Las Vegas, NV

The Bellagio card picture above was in use when The Bellagio was new and belonged to Steve Wynn. During the planning process of my first trip back to Las Vegas as an adult, I went on various web sites that sold discounted airline tickets and cheap reservations for hotels. Travelocity was new back then and Google Maps didn't exist yet. Not having been to Las Vegas as an adult, I did not know that there was a Las Vegas Strip much less that nearly all the hotels were on it. I looked at each picture of each resort on the travel websites and hoped that they would be somewhere nearby. When I listed them by price descending, The Bellagio was at the top. The pictures of The Bellagio didn't show any of the neighboring casinos so I thought it was like a village somewhere out of town and you had to drive miles and miles to get there. I stayed at the MGM that trip and when I saw The Bellagio in person for the first time with the dancing fountains I decided that I didn't care how much a room cost, I was going to stay there. The next trip I arranged to Las Vegas, I stayed at The Bellagio with a Lake-view room.

That second trip was better than the first. I don't even remember most of the first trip because I was so overwhelmed. Las Vegas is better after you've come to know Las Vegas.

Now making the first trip in the 2010s is quite overwhelming (mine was 2001 but I was too wasted to remember tons now). My g/f (her first) and I took about the entire length of our first trip (4 days) to really figure out how to efficiently use the pedestrian walkways!

Any more details about the trip staying at Bellagio?

Any more details about the trip staying at Bellagio?

I have a sad story about a subsequent trip to The Bellagio. It was right after 9/11. Although I had to go to work all week, the stock market was closed and so that left me with a lot of time to surf those travel websites. If I recall, planes weren't even back in the air when I arranged to spend a weekend at The Bellagio that second or third weekend after 9/11, I just wanted to get out of New York. Back then I had a casino host and she was very happy to comp a weekend for me in a Lake-view room. I got to Las Vegas without incident but the place was a ghost town. I had The Bellagio and its staff all to myself. That was until they started laying people off in mid-shift. I lost a bartender at the sports book between drinks! My casino host wasn't around by the end of the weekend. It was a bit depressing. Getting home was difficult because McCarran Airport didn't have their stuff together for the new security requirements and the lines were enormous. I'm not certain, but I believe that's the last time I actually stayed at The Bellagio.

One thing I try to do every time I go to Las Vegas is visit Gelato way in the back of The Bellagio. I don't know why, but that little ice cream shop is my favorite.

I was in Vegas just a couple of months after 9/11 and couldn't believe the line-ups when it was time to leave. Both sides of the concourse in front of security were packed with people all the way back to the main concourse. I thought it would be hours to get through security but they did something absolutely right. They had a security traffic director at the front who am sure was a drill sargeant in a former life. He could make himself heard all the way to back without any mike. He put the fear of God into everyone "do it this way and do it right or you will be pulled from the line and start over at the back" . A few non-believers got pulled and sent to the back as well as anybody that beeped and the other several thousand people got ready, stayed organized and it only took about 1/2 an hour.

My first trip to Vegas was in Nov. 2001, and I really don't remember much issue. Maybe I forgot the drill sargeant there...lol Also maybe because we arrived that Thanksgiving and left that Sunday morning, so traffic was below average? I also hit quads at McCarran on the way out. I also hit back-to-back quads for the first time ever there last year as well. Oddities.
