Quote: AZDuffmanI agree and call for pardon and/or clemency given that it is almost Festivus. IMHO, EB just pointed out some things that some folks cannot handle. So the answer is "we can't talk about this anymore!" Similar to my post about finals being postponed because some ivy-league kids cannnot handle real life.

BRING BACK B9!
BRING BACK EB!
FREE PETE ROSE!
The whole topic they were discussing was absurd.
The last EB post was pretty funny but many of his posts in that thread I found pretty offensive.
I treat people as unique individuals regardless of cultural background.
B9 got the special Wiz exemption at DT and blew it. He's not coming back if he cant handle a special exemption.
I am pretty sure Pete Rose has never been in the pokey. He's has been totally free his whole life. So free he can bet on baseball if he wants.
EB, boy is he gonna have a lot of time on his hands. Its only 3 days.

The link didn't work but I know about the building of the ark there. I just have to find the following:
Green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants........

I thought it clever of EB to involve and lampoon "scubatim84" 's pen name in the insult, i.e. "scuba" viz. "deep end of the pool" and "underequipped."
Clever, but apparently not clever enough.
While EB's post was a personal insult, scuba's post was an insult to everyone who has participated in the thread.
EvenBob/Spike is neutered at the moment? No way!!!!! He should be fully nuked.

Insulting all participants is okay but you can't insult the person who insulted everyone.
Overdoing it with the suspension, in my opinion. Both deserve warnings, at most.

Mods were probably making up for an earlier bad call where he should have been suspended. Ill just have be happy thinking I was involved in the original bad call.
No question that quite a few posters, myself included, have earned suspensions in responding to something he said, a calculated result which I am certain he intended; it's like he prides himself on inducing a lineman to jump offsides by making a tiny flinch visible to the opposing tackle but not to the refs.

The policy is voluntary suspensions must last at least 30 days. She can ask to return after serving said period, but she sounded pretty firm about her departure.

Quote: MrVI seem to recall EB saying something to the effect that he doesn't often get suspended because he knows just how far to take it without crossing the line, or something to that effect.
If I remember correctly, in all of his years and all of his posts, he has been suspended here exactly twice.
First was for repeating his view that casinos are "evil".
Second was for his claim that race results in differences between folks.
Both were argued behind the scenes, both times he was granted clemency and returned early.
Respect.
EB was not suspended for his racist posts. He was suspended for a personal insult to scubatim within that thread.
The Wizard did not feel what he said rose to the level of a personal insult, and asked me to overturn my decision, which I did.
I closed the thread in a separate action after seeing complaints both in the thread and receiving them by PM's. I was asked by the Wizard to re-open the thread in the interest of supporting free speech, regardless of the offense taken by others, which I did.
We have lost at least one other member over those decisions.
That's where it stands, for now. I am off to holiday with my mother; see you all on Boxing Day.

It proves racism. It proves that not all men are created equal. That's gonna pee some people off.

Bob, I was once told by a black man that the most despicable kind of racists are the ones that are prejudiced against their own race.
The entire year of 2011 had only twenty entries but, wait, it gets better. Ten of those were one person, there was one voluntary resignation and entries of two each for three others. For those still keeping score, it looks like a grand total of eight people were disciplined on that 2011 list. How did the forum survive? Were people better behaved a few short years ago or is something else at play? Does having a lengthy, somewhat irrelevant, suspension list make for a better forum? As we're discussing IQ, how does a forum with high IQ members end up with such a list?
Quote: 1BBI'd like to wish a belated happy birthday to the suspension list which was born on Christmas Day four years ago. Look how it has grown and flourished from it's humble beginning.
Yes, that was my Christmas gift to the forum in 2011. I think we should keep that spirit alive by having mass bannings on every subsequent Christmas of members who manage to stir up trouble while still abiding by forum rules, barely.

I think it is mainly that we had fewer members back then.
To those who complain about the suspension list, let me offer a radical idea -- Don't read it.

Entropy ;)
Comparing year's lists is like comparing NASCAR stats. It's impossible because there are too many variables. Rule changes, mods in, mods out, members in, members out... it's hard to even define an era, which you must first do to compare it to anything.
I enjoyed the SL as a member. Often when I was bored, I'd read some of the greatest hits. The SL sent me right to them ;) As a mod, it's handy indeed. Some of it's just an ease of workload, being able to pull up past transgressions and copy/paste info. But it's also good for those judgement calls. It won't smooth over every bump, but at least an unpopular decision is given credence by evidence found therein.
In short, I <3 the SL =)

It even has a block available on it. Didn't even notice that until the other day.

I love this idea. But I think it should be done the day after Christmas to start the new year for the forum. We already have Festivus on the 23rd, Christmas Eve on the 24th and Christmas on the 25th. I think the 26th should officailly be "Day of Exile". On this the Wizard Claus suspends people for 1 day that have annoyed him and lists the reason. They did not have to break any rules. It could be for horrible ideas or theories on gambling, lame systems or any other behaviors that have annoyed him in the last 365 days.

Something else at play. More moderators. One of which has a hair trigger.

Things can be similar but not infringe. We can call it the suspending of the idiots. Nothing like the airing of the grievances. :)

I wonder, how many were wrongly accused and sentenced to internet death while the real story tellers roamed unchallenged?
Casinos skip the mirrors, windows, and clocks, to condition gamblers into thinking that they are god's gift to humanity. No way to look at yourself, or to be subjected to onlookers and influences from the outside world.

My guess would be that persons with extremely high intelligence quotients never come to decisions on the mundane. The only stuff which truly challenges them.

I do believe that's a personal insult, since you're referring to "the mods, one of which has a hair trigger"; you've called me stupid. As well as your supposition being incorrect as to the facts. MY guess is that you don't know what you're talking about, or any of us in person.
Here's your Festivus present; I won't suspend you for this. I'll just say, right back atcha, pal.

Mods should unionize and demand payment.
Quote: sodawaterWhy would anyone want to be an unpaid moderator, working for free and making money for first the Wizard and now some murky foreign corporation?
Mods should unionize and demand payment.
The Forum, in and of itself, doesn't necessarily make money.
I offered to become a Moderator because I got a ton of value out of the WoO site and wanted to give some back however I could. I remain a Moderator because:
A. I consider Wizard a personal friend.
AND
B. I haven't met the new owner, himself, but I like his managers and our parent site.

The Wizard sold his empire for $2.35 million. Obviously, the WoO site was the bulk of that price, but even if the WoV was a "throw in" to the deal, we can safely assume it accounted for a measly five percent of the purchase price.
Five percent of $2.35 million is $117,500. I seriously doubt the forum racked up $100k in costs over the years it's been in operation -- and this doesn't even count further income from ads, referrals, donation, etc
So this forum did/does make money. I don't think a "bonus" of $5,000 per moderator would be out of hand.

Compensation hasn't been offered by either past or present owners, so I don't look for any offer any time soon. It does seem a bit audacious of you to spend their money for them, though. Even on my behalf. :)
