Yes, agreed, and it doesn't make sense to leave a banned member's quoted posts intact while deleting his direct posts, obviously all traces of the offender should be eradicated.

Ya' follow?

That SOUNDS good but all it means in reality is - if the sock posts faster than the mod is able to delete and before someone gets around to quoting, some traces of the sock might remain. That's an inane way to do things; the rule should be applied more even handedly.
link to original post

I believe that I agree with the crux of your argument, But I tend not to call any of wizard's policies 'Inane'.

Mike's house, Mike's rules.

The policy as I understand it, ( I have a PM, but won't break confidentiality) is that members posts do not get bits hacked out of them, even if it's a quote from a sock.

I'm sure wizard would love to hear your case.

I ask again, out of curiosity. Why do you raise this very specific topic now?
link to original post

I think if MDawg wants to call a Wizard policy inane that is fair ground. The Wiz can respond. As far as why now, a sock was insulting MDawg recently. I can’t remember which thread.

BUT. It's Wizard's stated policy that a member's post is sacrosanct and that moderators should not generally edit or redact anything in a good standing member's posts. And that includes anything in quotes even from a sock.
The reality was that every case was taken on it's merits.
link to original post

Well stated. The policy that a member's posts are sacrosanct supersedes the goal to keep sock's comments off the site.

I will say I request that SOOPOO and anyone else who quoted KJ either edit their posts to remove the quotes or give me permission to.

I happened on this while reading about how KewlJ was pretending to be himself - telling people via sock puppet that KewlJ had died

From 2016, a couple years before I joined:

which made me realize that this sort of thing, commenting on how WOV "isn't what it used to be" predates the arrival of any member, including MDawg. Just apparently an ongoing lament, that may or may not be true.

And from more recently, more of the same, blah blah blah:

Banned members often continue to post elsewhere, and often they say things or make claims that warrant being discussed here, for entertainment purposes if for no other.

A banned member, who will alas have to remain anonymous, claims that "it" (not sure if it's the scoundrel's preferred pronoun, but it should be) won one and a half million dollars on a twenty-five dollar VP bet.

Hilarity ensued, hilarity which YOU are denying yourself the ability to participate in.

I see no valid reason to prohibit discussion of banned members ridiculous claims made elsewhere, just as this board allows its members in good standing to make patently absurd, ridiculous claims with impunity.

You and a few others must have me confused with someone who said she was definitely cheating(PG?). I actually said. I didn't think she was cheating. C'mon Gordon, lighten up: ams288 was poking fun at EB, using EB's claim of extreme frugality as a launching pad for a joke at EB's expense.

There's a difference between a joke and an insult, isn't there?

I for one never for a second believed the photo actually depicted EB's living room, and as my opinion of EB's daily hygiene has always been quite low I see no damage to EB based on the post.

EB is an active member of our forum. Use this simple test when making a post in response to something that EB says: does this post attack EB as a person? or does it merely respond to the ideas that he has posted? If you decide that it insults EB as a person then I suggest you don't make that post, because you risk being suspended.

There were dozens of ways that ams288's post could have been worded so as to have avoided being a personal attack while delivering whatever humor may have intended. But his post directly insulted EB. ams288 has never appeared to me to have a friendly relationship with EB, therefore I did not interpret it as a friendly joke.

If, as part of a contentious discussion, EB had posted the same picture but labeled it "Wizards living room" or "Mission's living room" or "Mr. V's living room", then what would you expect the moderators to do? We would act just as I have acted here.

ams288 is still a valued member of our forum. This is just a suspension for three days. It was reviewed by a second moderator who agreed with the suspension.

i guess i went to the wrong thrift stores.
the 1st time i went, it weas just out of curiosity. it was small and i saw nothing i wanted.
the 2nd time, it was a much bigger store. i donated 2 suitcases full of clothes and the suitcases.
then i looked around. now i'm overwhelmed by too many choices.

2 decades ago, my local walmart had a clearance on grey moisture wicking gym tshirts for like $2 each.
i bought 5 and still use them but nowadays mostly as a regular tshirt since i stopped going to the gym.

I have a few observations on thrift stores.

One, if you want the better stuff you have to go to ones in the better part of town. The better stuff goes there.

Two, you have to really like to shop and look for stuff. I have taken casual looks but never bought any clothes there. Other stuff, yes, but clothes I prefer just buy cheap at WMT.

Three, for clothes they are better for women's stuff. Women upgrade clothes more. Men wear clothes until there are only a few threads holding them together. Most men's stuff is probably from estates. I gave a ton of stuff from my dad away to the Vets. My stuff just is so worn out there is little life left in any of my clothes.

So, let me get this straight, a "nasty insult" gets a gordon888 double standard pass because the "insulted" party (1) has a very thick skin and (2) has a great sense of humor? Suppose EB would have replied: "What you don't like my filing system?" Would that provide a gordon888 double standard pass? BTW, I do not need and Ace2 apology. I just consider the source.

I've seen stuff at thrift stores that still have the original tags from the store where they were first bought. Ironically, sometimes Goodwill puts a *higher* price on these items than the original price tag shows.

In recent years lots more "vintage" stores have popped up. They differ from "thrift" in that they generally have higher-quality merchandise, and higher prices. Their offerings are curated, rather than just putting anything out that gets donated. For that matter, vintage stores tend to be for-profit, and don't get donations. They buy excess from places like Goodwill. Goodwill gets *way* more donations than they can sell in their own stores, so they sell in bulk (by the pound) to other stores (like Savers, which is also for-profit even though it's thrift).

In the larger cities (like Austin, where I live), Goodwill has a wholesale store where they aggregate all the donations from the local stores and then sell to the public by the pound. This is where vintage shops get much of their merchandise. Whatever doesn't sell there goes to the local stores (or sold in bulk to Savers, etc.). I've been there, it's carnival-like: There are barriers put up while staff dumps completely unsorted stuff on a long row of tables, then when they raise the barriers lots of people all rush the aisle. They repeat this throughout the day with different aisles. It's like a continues Black Friday mob.

For those in Austin, I have a list of Austin thrift stores.

I don't buy clothing in thrift stores because I am big and tall and they have little in my size, but I have no problem buying certain items used, e.g. vehicles, high end audio equipment, home and garden equipment off of craigslist, and of course collectibles: I have bought almost 200 Dinky Toys off of e-bay and etsy.

Me:"I just saved $300 on this leather trench coat at Goodwill "

My girlfriend:"you are so cheap. I only wear brand new items. Not used crap"

One year later

Me:"Check out my brand new coat. Paid top dollar for it at the first hand store."

My girlfriend:"You got ripped off. I saw the same coat in same condition from the Goodwill for $300 cheaper "

Sadly this conversation actually happened once.

Some folks here have to check their sense of humor.

In some cases involving certain kinds of insults, it has been our protocol to take into account
- whether the target of the insult is angry and expresses a sense of injury, versus just laughing it off
- whether the offending party subsequently apologizes or at least moderates their original comment

Regarding the "gordon888 double standard pass," I explained my original decision to not suspend Ace2 but after you complained about the insult, I said that if another moderator chooses to suspend Ace2 for a suspension that I would support that decision. Then Wizard posted that he had felt a sense of insult as well but that he chose not to issue a suspension. Are you angry at Ace2? Or at me? At Wizard? At Dieter? I'm really having trouble understanding your grievance and what you are asking for.

I would like to add:

Situations are considered on a case by case basis.

Much like you can't write much on a blank page, everything I own is used. Some came to me used, some became used shortly after I got them.

I prefer the term "skinflint" over "tightwad", but it certainly seems that most of the Green Team knows their way around a thrift store.
May the cards fall in your favor.

And not a single person gets suspended for hijacking this thread to talk about the thrift store nonsense.

You moderators and this site ... it's just so sad.

I am so sorry for you Michael, to have this site and what it's become be part of your legacy. You are so much better than this.

He insulted me? I would not know I have him blocked here and on the other forum for years. There is nothing he could possibly say that I would have any interest in. He didn't insult me because I never saw it nor will I look for it.

How about just taking all the discipline private rather than having it be public (like on pretty much every other forum)? That would eliminate most of the drama, right there.

But that does not matter. See the recent pronoun row regarding members not active for years. EB is a member in good standing, so an insult is an insult. Even if he has blocked the other user for years.

First, I did NOT "complain" about the "nasty insult." I asked what the statement was in your mind. YOU determined it was a "nasty insult," so why would you need to confer with another mod.? Others, including the Wizard felt some level of insult, so again why the necessity of confirmation?

I feel NO anger towards anyone here. There is a sense of frustration because my "grievance" centers on (1) mod's inconsistencies in doling out suspensions, and a true double standard against my posts which exists primarily because I have been highly resistant to the "math" posted in various threads. I shall be specific.
1. "Wake up and smell the pot roast." That was thought to be an anti-semitic phrase due to someone's ignorance.
2. I had been away from this forum for over ten years and made a passing political remark not knowing that the rules had changed. So instead of a short warning as many others were given, I was suspended by Wizard who absolutely knew of my long absence, BTW during those years I was posting, 2010, insults were rampant and acceptable.
3. There was a post I made as an answer to ThatDonGuy trying to clarification on one of his math posts, and I asked about his ego. Suspension! Others on other threads and posts have referred directly to egos but no suspensions there.

It is your forum with your rules, and I can live with however they are enforced, but I will continue to call out the inconsistencies and lack of accountability as they might occur IMO.

So, when you get pulled over for a traffic violation, you expect "I didn't know" to get you out of a punishment?

Worked for my brother in law. He was pulled over for driving in the right lane on a highway (should have moved to left lane) when a cop was on the shoulder with another car he was ticketing. When he was pulled over and the cop asked him if he knew what he did, he said he was unaware of that law, and he just slowed down for safety. The cop gave him a warning and no ticket.

Breaking an inconsequential rule is not quite on the same level as a law violation. Your posted example is laughable.

I was pulled over once for making an illegal turn. The officer pointed out the no turn sign. I asked him if I made a "bad" left turn, and he replied, "oh, no sir, you made a good left turn." With a further explanation from me about the turn (no need for that here), he let me go without giving me a ticket.

This forum is a benevolent dictatorship. There are no trials or appeals just charging and sentencing and mostly arbitrary and sometimes retaliatory.
