The Stars Group has reported record revenue for the first quarter of 2020, as the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak led to significant increases in online poker and casino play.

As I have stated before, this is a difficult question to answer. Due to the lockdown, measured infection and death rates are declining, but the novel coronavirus is still in our communities. We still do not know enough about it or the real rate of infection to say with any accuracy what will happen when we do open our doors again. But one thing is for sure: If we go back to behaving exactly as we did before the pandemic, without a vaccine, the virus will spread and more people will get sick and die...

Initially, there will have to be a partial reopening of our economies. How should the land-based gambling industry react to that? Also, given that our fellow human beings are currently considered by us to be health threats to be avoided, what measures need to be put in place to reassure our customers? Social distancing will be one of the measures, but what changes do we need to make to our casino floors? How do we encourage people to sit at a blackjack or roulette table with other people, but to do so safely? How do we protect our employees? What about craps games with dice being handed from person to person? How do we ensure slot machines are not transmitters of viruses? After Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman called Wednesday for the swift reopening of hotels and casinos, many who earn their livelihoods in such establishments said they were afraid to return unless strict safety measures were introduced for themselves and guests.

Although Goodman said the businesses should reopen, she provided no guidelines on how they should handle social distancing and other safety measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Nevada (regulation) - Howard Stutz, CDC Gaming Reports - Nevada’s casino operators will need to file a plan of reopening with state gaming regulators for each of their properties before the nation’s largest legal gambling market can reopen. Gaming Control Board Chairwoman Sandra Douglass Morgan said the agency’s policy memorandum, which was posted to the board’s website, was not intended to be an exhaustive process. Trump administration pulls rule barring PPP loans for small casinos

Live dealer online casino specialists Evolution Gaming nearly doubled their profits in the first quarter of 2020 as bettors sought out online alternatives following the pandemic-related shutdown of live sports.

Figures released late last week show the Stockholm-listed Evolution’s revenue hit €115.1m in the three months ending March 31, 45% higher than the same period last year. Earnings were up 79% to €64.1m as margins rose 10 points to 55.7%, which pushed profit up 90% to €54.2m.

Nevada gaming revenues fall nearly 40% in March

Louisiana casinos could reopen by Memorial Day
Louisiana (COVID-19) - Britt Lofaso, KLFY - In many parishes across the state, the number of COVID-19 cases has flattened. The Louisiana Gaming Control Board says as long as that continues, it’s likely casinos could re-open in May. “If the numbers continue to do what we hope they’re going to do and flatten out, perhaps by the end of the month,” Louisiana Gaming Control Board Chairman Ronnie Jones said. “It will be reduced capacity. We won’t be filling up these gaming floors with hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people. It’ll probably be a percentage of what their authorized capacity is,” Jones said. https://bit.ly/2zeRatw

Former MGM Resorts International CEO Jim Murren, head of the new public-private partnership, said the team has been working to “change the paradigm on how testing is conducted in Nevada” for the past few weeks.
