Business or pleasure? I didn't know that was a thing but I will look into it.
Not exactly a good idea. If ferry broke down or bad weather, then u would be stuck.Quote: KonbuI was in Nicaragua and now Costa Rica. You can consider taking the ferry from Macau straight to HKIA and save time.
My ferry ticket was $166 and lunch at the Golden Dragon Casino was $130 but the BJ table gave me $350 while I was wasting time last night. So I made $60 since my spending report. GWAE you are my accountant, you can send me my spending totals when I'm done my trip 😜
I was joking with some friends from back home that I went to Hong Kong and my first meal is Japanese and my last is Korean lol.
I was trying to figure out the directions from the Kuala Lumpur airport to my hostel and yes a bus/train will be much cheaper. However I will getting in at 1 AM local time and a taxi will make sure I get there in one piece. What's $60 at the end of the day?
Sadly I just finished the really yummy Korean soup and although I want more I'm going to go find my gate. Til next time 😀
Quote: PokerGrinderI already have my plane ticket to Kuala Lumpur that cost me $808 HKD or about $139 Canadian. .
I just looked up that flight.... the distance is about the same as going Calgary to Toronto.... but the price seems to have the first two numbers reversed as to cost back home for a 4 hr flight. Did they provide a meal too?
My flight was delayed last night for about a hour but we made up 20 minutes in the air so not too bad. We landed around 1:40 AM local time. I decided to take a very expensive (expensive for costs in Malaysia) taxi for 180 Malaysian Ringget ($54 CAD). The taxi ride was about a hour long and he spoke English and got me right to my hostel door. Normally I would attempt a cheaper method to get from the airport but it was late, the shuttle bus wasn't even running anymore and I was tired and didn't care at that moment. Ok so this taxi... Was almost a car lol. The car must have been at least 20 years old. It squeaked and croaked and the driver was speeding down the highway very fast. I'm not sure if I was too tired to care or maybe cause he was confident but the crazy taxi ride didn't bother me. He also regularly drove in two lanes and didn't use turning signals but I survived.
The hostel is connected to an Indian restaurant. You walk through the "restaurant" to reach the hostel. The restaurant is really more of a patio with a kitchen. Front desk guy is a 25 year old from Miami so we related well. He joined me at the Indian restaurant for a 3 AM dinner. I had a murtabak which is sort of a stuffed Indian pancake with lamb and cheese and onions among other stuff in it. We talked for a couple hours until I had to go to sleep. The room was so hot cause apparently nobody turned on the AC which the front desk guy says is odd.
I slept about 4 hours, came downstairs for the free hostel breakfast at the Indian place outside. Coffee and roti with a curry dipping sauce. I'm now going to go wash my face and figure out what to do today.
You are now coming into my territory and as a local if you need any information from me just shoot away here.

Where are you located? Kuala Lumpur?
Konbu that's awesome. Sorry your luck has been rotten. I've never been where you are but I'm still surprised that you are bored of travelling. How long have you been on the road?
Quote: Deck007Singapore, but I am in KL once or twice a month.
Oh cool. Anything you'd suggest I check out while I'm here? I'm headed to Singapore next week.
Quote: smoothgrhPG, thanks for posting all the photos—especially the ones of restaurants and food! I'll definitely share them with Mrs. smooth–we'll probably visit within the next two years!
Glad you liked them. If you can definitely go to Asia, it's so beautiful here.
Ok so last I posted I had taken the taxi to my hostel, had dinner and then went to bed. I woke up around 10 after having not slept much cause someone turned off the AC so it was so hot all night. The hostel has a free breakfast at the Indian restaurant. Two pieces of Roti with dipping sauce and coffee. I'm not sure what kind of coffee it was but it was really tasty, different than I'm used to.
I was feeling a little uneasy about walking around here alone as it is a much poorer country than I've ever been to. I decided to go for a little walk a few blocks away so I didn't get lost. I walked for a bit and bought some dried meat that looked like bacon but was sweet and spicy. It wasn't bad but it made a little nauseous so I'm going to avoid that in the future. I got to a mall so I decided to check it out. This mall has 7 floors and they sell nothing but electronics. I got bored and left. On my way back I stopped at a Syrian restaurant and got a shwarma to go. It was ok but nowhere near as good as the shwarma I got in Israel in 2011.
I found a little market and looked around. The sales people are some of the pushiest people I've ever encountered. I looked at this "Louis Vitton" bag and the guy kept trying to convince me to buy it. I said I'm just looking, I'm not really sure if I want it. He offers me it for 120 Ringgit I say no, he's says you're first customer day, 105 Ringgit. I said I'm not sure right now, he keeps saying I bothered so offer him a price. This went on for a while and he kept lowering the price. I tried walking away but he grabbed my arm, luckily I'm a big guy so at no point did I feel threatened. But if a female were in my shoes I could see that getting very uncomfortable for them. He eventually offers it for 40 Ringgit as I finally stopped being nice and was walking away. I said no thanks and he kept shouting prices at me. I left the market lol.
I walked the opposite way back to my hostel. As I turned the corner onto the hostel's street this lady comes up to me and offers me a happy massage. I said no thank you and kept going. This happened three more times in less than a minute with each one offering me a happy massage. The last girl kept saying come fuck me. I walked away pretty fast lol.
I wanted to find a nice market to go shopping and found central market online about 20 minutes away. I google mapped it and and started following the map. I got about 8 minutes away before accidentally deleting the map which meant I was lost, whoops. Luckily I saw a McDonald's and knew they'd have wifi. I bought a Oreo Mcflurry so I could sit down and I google mapped the destination again. I found central market and looked around for a hour. I haggled 2 snow globes for my little cousins down from 19 Ringgit each to 2 for 20 Ringgit. I'm pretty good at this haggling thing. 😅 I didn't buy anything else. I walked back without getting lost. I mentioned that Malaysia is a poor country and it shows. There are so many homeless people begging for money on the streets. Kuala Lumpur also has a bit of a dirty smell most places I've gone here. It's about 35 Celsius which is 95 Fahrenheit so I'm was very warm and sweaty from walking. Luckily the hostel is nice and cold. I went to the dorm to cool down and drink some water. There was a German guy in the room named Pascal. We started talking and he mentions in about 20 minutes he's going to walk to this bar called Heli bar that is on top of an old helicopter pad. I said sure and the rough night begins lol.
We walked for about 15 minutes and got to the building. We went up to the 34 floor and ordered drinks in the bar. The Heli pad was full so we had to wait. 2 minutes later it started to drizzle outside so some people left and we climbed the 2 flights of stairs to the top. The view was amazing. We were so close to the Petronus towers. We sat down and had a few enormous beer. We talked for about a hour while it drizzled. Then the sun went down and the buildings lit up. We finished our beer and took the elevator down.
Panoramic from the Heli bar.
Part 2 of the rough night. In the elevator of the Heli bar we met a German couple around my age who are studying in Shanghai. They are taking a little vacation here. After talking we all decided to go grab dinner together on a famous street called food street one block from Pascal and my hostel. We chose a Thai restaurant from the 40+ restaurants available. I had some Thai noodles with chicken and a beer that is the size of 2 normal ones. Beer in Malaysia is more expensive because it's so heavily taxed. Someone told me that is because it is a Muslim country, I'm not sure if this is the reason. I paid 10 Ringgit for my food and 18 Ringgit for the beer.
Part 3 and this is where the night gets sloppy. We are a little buzzed when we left the restaurant. The German couple went home (don't remember their names) and Pascal and I went back to the hostel to continue drinking. On our walk back we saw chicken feet being cooked and decided we'd both try them. They were 1 Ringgit each. Neither of us liked them much, they are hard to eat since there isn't much on the bones.
I know GWAE wants some 😜
When we got there we bought a couple beer from the hostel fridge, 14 Ringget for 2 beer. An older guy from the patio comes in and starts talking to us, he's from the states. He gives us each a shot of rice wine liquor or something like that. It was 52% alcohol and burned going down. We kept drinking beer with Greg (the American) 3 Fins, 1 girl and 2 guys and later 2 German girls. I had another shot of the disgusting liquor and Pascal had 3 more. We drank all the hostel's beer so we went on a beer run. Pascal and I walked to the corner store and bought 7 of the massive beer and 9 normal size ones. This was 214 Ringget. Not cheap but Pascal was going home the next day and insisted he get rid of his Malaysian money. We went back to the hostel and continued to drink. Around 3 AM I couldn't see straight anymore and went to bed. I woke up at 7, took some Tylenol, drank a ton of water and went back to bed feeling terrible. I woke up again at 11 AM this time for good.
At noon Pascal is up and feels as horrid as I do. He doesn't remember much from the night before. Chris the front desk guy says everyone drank until about 5 AM after I went to bed. I showered which made me feel a bit better but not great. Pascal left for the airport and I sat in the common room with the Fins. They weren't feeling great either. I ate some Roti and butter chicken, with a 1.5 L water this was only 14 Ringett. I drank as much water as I could and finally around 1:30 walked to Pudu Central to take the bus to Resorts World Genting Highlands. To be continued...
How much was the hostel room and free breakfast?
most likely beef jerky.Quote: HunterhillThat meat you ate might have been what they call special meat .Woof Woof -:)

GWAE very little meat on chicken feet. My aunt loves them and gets them when we go for dim sum back home. The German girls were cute not much to tell though lol.
FleaStiff I'm paying about 30 Ringgit a night.
Speedycrap I'm not sure since I didn't stick around long enough to find out. Also I don't think you have read much of the thread if you think I'm out here to grind poker lol. As far as women I have no problem picking up girls. 😊
How many people in ONE room?
Own shower for yourself or room?

Maybe

When I get to bar I pound about 8 or 10 quickly. I get basically hammered enough to last me all night and I milk 1 or 2 more the rest of the night. About an hour before leaving I pound 3 or 4 large glasses of water quickly. I then take 800mg ibuprofen and drink a 16oz gatorade. Either this method works amazingly well or I just don't get hangovers. Either way as long as I never experience a hangover I am happy.
It could be that Tylenol/alcohol combinations won't hurt with moderation, but if you are on a bender one half of the immoderate formula is already in place.
3 bunk beds that aren't full every night. The room is very spacious. It has a balcony.
Own shower for yourself or room?
There are 6 showers for the floor that are shared by three rooms of six people.
All male or co-ed??
My dorm is co-ed.
Pics of hostel???
I will post pics tomorrow.

I rarely drink so I don't think it will be a long term issue. I get drunk maybe five times a year.
This is the dorm room. 3 bunk beds a decent size room. 6 shared bathrooms. We also have a balcony in our dorm.
Quote: speedycrapHow much per nite? Any min stay requirements? Do u feel safe? Clean washroom? Centrally located? Easy transportation? ?
You ask a ton of questions.
I'm paying 30 Ringgit a night, no minimum stay. Bathrooms are clean. I feel safe, and yes the hostel is centrally located that's part of the reason I booked it. I walk almost everywhere but yes transportation is easy. We took a few übers today and they were cheap and easy.
My bus ticket and cable car ticket were 13.60 Ringget. I sat behind 3 girls who looked like they were in their early 20's. When I sat down one of them told me I should come sit with her. I'm not stupid when a pretty girl says come sit with her, you go lol. We talked most of the ride, her and her friends were on a 11 day vacation from Indonesia. Her name was Farah. They were all 20 and going into med school, I never did figure that one out. They seem to young to be starting med school but I guess it's Asia. The bus ride was a hour and then we took the cable cars up to the casino.
It got foggy the farther up we went.
When I got there we all checked in and I couldn't find them so I went to the casino. My hotel was very basic but fine and only 54 Ringgits.
The casino is weird they give you 28 Ringgits for the electronic roulette machine for signing up. I won 3 Ringgits off that. There are no TITO's they give you a card which the money goes on like a gift card and you cash it out whenever. Then I checked out the table games, lots of roulette (10 Ringgit min inside), Baccarat (50 min) and no BJ at all but they do have a game called Pontoon which looked almost identical to BJ and the min was 100 Ringgit. I played 2 hands of baccarat and won 130 Ringgit plus my chips I keep. I didn't play much cause the limits were really high. I cashed out and left.
I ate at this dim sum place. It was good, 28 Ringgits for 3 dishes and a drink. This is expensive for Malaysia but not surprising at a casino resort. I walked around a little and heard my name, it was the idonesian girls from the bus. They were eating dinner and I joined them until they finished. The casino has a giant mall with shops, restaurants, kid rides, a bowling alley, arcade and much more. We walked around for hours checking it out.
This is the main area near the hotel check in.
Later in the night we went bowling, 2 of the 3 girls had never bowled before. We all had a great time. We went to Starbucks for a drink and wifi since the hotel had none. Around midnight Farah's friends went to bed and we stayed and talked for a bit then went to my room. Try not to be crude boys 😃 Let's just say fun was had.
The next day I packed up again to head for KL. I had Ma Lak Minced chicken with noodles. This soup was very good but so hot. I love spicy food but this was on a whole other level. I ate it and then got ice cream to try and numb the burning on my tongue and lips.
I met up with the girls at the bus, they had gone to do some last minute shopping. We took the bus back and said goodbyes. They were headed to Jakharta and I was headed back to my hostel. Overall a fun casino trip.
If one us dollar is 4.4 Ringitts, then I have to round up to 5 ringits 'cause I sure can't do fractions.
So if your room costs you 30 Ringitts a night you are payng six dollars in Real Money (ie, American money).
There are 18 people on the floor... if ALL rooms are fully occupied that is 18 times 4.4 which is hopelessly beyond me, so it has to be converted to 18 times 6 which is still hopelessly beyond me, but 18 is close to 20 and 20 times 6 is 120, so the floor brings in 120 minus 12 which is 110 minus 2 which is 108 a night in Real Money, from that they have to pay for Free Breakfasts, electricity for lights, fans, a vacuum cleaner, a manager, an internet connection, etc, not to mention things like rent and taxes.
So either there is more than one floor of rooms or I'm missing something?
My man...Quote: PokerGrinderTry not to be crude boys 😃 Let's just say fun was had.
From the amounts I figured the Ringget was actually "somewhat" close to the $1, but after checking google it's currently $1 USD for 4.43 Ringget, so everything in your post above still seems pretty cheap to me. You said the hotel room was ~60Ringget, which is only $13 =).
I mean, did you take any pictures with your random guy (and girl) friends from the trip??
Usually there's more than one floor, like a hotel... Not to mention these are in foreign countries where $100 might mean more there than here.Quote: FleaStiff...So either there is more than one floor of rooms or I'm missing something?
Edit: I note that Malaysian Muslims are prohibited by law from gambling. Can they enter or work in the casinos?
Money sure must go far there... their website says free linens and towels are included as well as a games room and a steam room. Plus they have free wifi and free internet access and all of this on no more than eight rooms. That is a bargain! Perhaps most of their money comes from the Indian restaurant!Quote: RomesUsually there's more than one floor, like a hotel... First Fleastiff I laughed so hard at your attempt of using math. It was one of the better posts I've read in a while. There are 47 beds spread out between two floors. All the workers at the hostel are backpackers who decided to stay longer. They get free room and food at the Indian restaurant plus about 600 Ringgit a month.
Romes this comment also made me laugh pretty hard. "My man..."
The Ringgit is actually the closest in Asia to a "real" dollar I believe. Yes I was paying about $6 USD a night in one of the best hostels in Kuala Lumpur. That's part of the reason why Asia is awesome. I took a few pics with the girls but on their camera. I'm going to ask Farah to send them to me when I get home. I don't think I have any pics with my drinking buddy from the other night either. Photos would have been weird while we were drinking I think.
Aye you can actually drive up the 8 kilometres to the top but the cable cars are about 5 times faster since you are driving up a mountain. The casino name is Resorts World Genting Highlands. Gambling age is 21. I think Muslims can enter and work but not in the casino. So they can work in the restaurants and all the attractions.
Fleastiff there is no steam room, I'm not sure why is says that. I'm not sure if they own the Indian restaurant or rent to them. I forgot to ask.
Quote: PokerGrinder... I think Muslims can enter and work but not in the casino. So they can work in the restaurants and all the attractions...
Thanks PG! I wonder how the legislators ever expected that law to be enforced. Is there a registry somewhere?
What was the ice cream supposed to be? It looked like a moldy dog foot print.
Have a safe trip to Singapore. I am looking forward to hearing more about your adventures, and seeing the chips you are collecting.

Fleastiff bring a calculator to the BJ table, see what happens lol or should I say how quickly they boot you from said casino.
From what I hear the whole darn country is a steam room. Actually I think by 'steam room' they were referring to the small device on the balcony where you can pour water on to hot rocks. You are correct the whole country is a steam box but there wasn't anything on the balcony I don't think. Does it say on the website that they own it?
Actually I don't think they even have a website themselves, at least I didn't find one. I just read the reviews posted by prior guests on Trip Advisor and the like. One of those reviews said everyone was fired, so I think the reviews are perhaps somewhat bogus at times. And perhaps the 'steam room' was by a rather creative writer. I don't know. Google just finds things for me, it doesn't evaluate anything for truthfulness or accuracy. And I'm sure you are too good a poker player to ever expect truthfulness or accuracy in any of my posts.Quote: PokerGrinderYou are correct the whole country is a steam box but there wasn't anything on the balcony I don't think. They do have a website, I found it. Also the everyone being fired happened while I was there. One night 3 staff got fired and one quit, they were down to one worker for 2 days.

After the caves we took a taxi to the Petronus/Twin towers. They were cool but we didn't pay to go to the top so we took some pictures and left.
We took the bus close to KL tower and then walked the wrong way so it took us a hour to get to the tower instead of 10 minutes. However because of this we ended up at a really good Pakistani restaurant. I had lamb curry, rice which tasted funny and Roti. (Bread) We decided to pay the 52 Ringgit to go to the top. The view was amazing, I don't remember exactly but KL tower is the 6th or 7th highest building in the world. After KL tower we went back to the hostel and I met a German girl name Saskia. Very nice girl and later the four of us went for dinner.
Views from KL tower.
It's raining over there.
I'm going for dinner (I'm in Singapore) but I will post my write up of yesterday when I get back. Btw this place is getting crazy because of the Chinese New Year tomorrow.
