I have been away from casinos for about 18 months, only to return fairly recently. The casino I frequent the most has changed the linked jackpot payouts from the various carnival poker games, MS Stud, UTH, 4card, Crazy4, Hold em Bonus ect.
The jackpot is still linked between the games, but the way to bet it as well as the payscale has been changed. Since I only play UTH of these games, all questions and thoughts are from that point of view.

You may bet from 1-5$ on your hand, or the dealers hand, or both, for the purpose of the jackpot. The $ figure bet acts as a multiplier for the payout on Flushes, boats, quads, and "magic cards". The magic card being a randomly chosen card, at random intervals. The hand must be made using the flop and your hold cards, or dealers, if you chose to bet dealer. There is no multiple for a straight flush, or royal, just 10% or 100%.
I see no advantage in betting more than 1$ on either myself nor the dealer as the scale doesn't increase for the top 2 hands unlike VP, where the royal pays a serious multiple on the 5th coin.
Yea yea yea... the dollar bets are for suckers. The jackpot has to be XXXXX for it to be a close enough EV play to make the bet, I know all that. I still have no issues tossing down my buck on a hand. The questions are : Bet both player hand and dealer hand? Does the jackpot have to be 2x if you are always betting player and dealer to make it a +EV play? Can it be a +EV play?
One of the other players, whom i know from the game and casino only, always bets both and only a buck each. He says he couldnt live with himself if the dealer ever flopped the royal, and he didnt have a bet on it, when he could have. Of course dude has flopped 2 royals all by himself on the game, so he is a bit ahead on the bet.

Thoughs?

I'm surprised nobody let's you bet on everyone at the table.
Three circles:
$1 - you
$1 - dealer
$1-5 - other 5 players (must bet $1 on all seated players)

As for your question, go look up some 5 card poker probabilities and see if you want to wager one or more dollars. 46 hands until you flop trips but the house is nice enough to give you back $9. 700 hands until you flop a full house but hey, here's $50! As for betting on 1 or 2 hands - I suppose if the jackpot amount were high enough you would want to bet on both hands. However, keep in mind even though that bet might be +EV it's "lottery +EV" e.g. 500,000 people lose $1, and 1 person wins $550,000. Every single dollar wagered is +EV but really only 1 lucky person gets to REALIZE that +EV - most will just lose their dollars.

The numbers are just way too gross IMO for the amount of hands you play per hour - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poker_probability
Your buddy is a few lifetimes ahead on the royal flopping curve.
