Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Super Bowl 53 prop bet challenge. Here are the rules:

  1. There is a list of questions/props relating to Super Bowl 53 below.
  2. All entrants must answer each question.
  3. 100 points will be associated with each question, to be divided among all those who answer correctly.
  4. For questions like the total points, if nobody is exactly correct, the points will go to those closest to the correct answer.
  5. Please PM me your predictions.
  6. Deadline is 9:00 AM, Vegas time, Feb 2. After this time, predictions will be posted.

Prop List

  1. Winning team
  2. Will the coin toss land on heads or tails?
  3. Total points
  4. Margin of victory
  5. Total number of touchdowns
  6. Total number of field goals
  7. Team to score first
  8. Team to score last
  9. Will the team to score first win?
  10. First score (TD, FG, or safety)
  11. Last score (TD, FG, or safety)
  12. Will there be a safety?
  13. Will the game go into overtime?
  14. Will there be a successful two-point conversion?
  15. Will there be a failed field goal attempt?
  16. Longest field goal
  17. Longest touchdown
  18. Will there be a defensive or special teams touchdown?
  19. Will the total points be a prime number?
  20. Total Scrabble points in the last name of the first player to score a touchdown.

If you want to side bet with each other, by all means, go ahead. I would be interested to join. However, neither I nor the site will vouch that losers will pay, it will be entirely on the honor system. I welcome any volunteer to organize that. I promise to not read submissions until after the deadline. Please do mark the title of your PM's properly, so I will know to not open it until the deadline.

May the best man, or woman, win!

Sounds like fun. 😁

But are those last two items real items that can be bet in real sports books?

Yeah, I know SB props can get pretty outlandish, but really....

Boyd casinos have done the Scrabble points one before. Speaking of which, here are the points per letter:

(1 point)-A, E, I, O, U, L, N, S, T, R
(2 points)-D, G
(3 points)-B, C, M, P
(4 points)-F, H, V, W, Y
(5 points)-K
(8 points)- J, X
(10 points)-Q, Z

I would also like to report I sent in my own picks to AyeCarumba, in the interests of being above reproach.

I have a question about the two "longest" props. For the purposes of this game, will points only be awarded for an exact number, or will the points go to whomever is closest to the correct answer in the event that the exact number was not chosen by anyone?

PS. Thanks for putting this on, Wiz. It sounds like fun.

Thanks for the kind words. No, I'm not doing the show about prop picks this year. I find my data is too old to accurately make predictions any longer. Also, despite perceiving advantages, my actual results have not matched my expectations.

I wouldn't mind being on the show again, but, sadly, I don't have anything good to talk about.

Bob and Munch have been doing a fair number of "listener questions" shows - you could appear on one of those to provide your gambling expertise! Just a thought.

Just submitted my picks, thanks for putting it together.

Just a point of clarification, longest field goal is longest 'made' fg, as contrasted with longest 'attempted' fg, correct?

Does going over matter ?

Let’s say longest FG is 40 yards. Nobody picked 40 but one person picked 39 and one person picked 41.

They’d get 50 points each ?

I'll probably submit my picks this weekend.

This is probably fodder for a new thread, but are you planning on accepting cash bets this year? I believe you were talking about retiring from that last year, but took my bets anyway. And, I lost all 4 of my bets. :(

And on that note, have the LV books posted their props sheets yet? I plan on stopping by the Meadowlands this weekend to get their props sheets, if they have them ready.

Usually the full prop sheets aren't out until Thursday night.

I am here to tell you, those poker cards are fantastic. Sweet and smooth to shuffle and deal.

The only thing is, they're bridge sized (which I personally prefer), not the wider poker size. But probably the nicest cards I've ever used.

In other news, let the record show that I have a $20 one-on-one bet with SOOPOO on the greater total points between the two of us.

They're made by Cartimundi. They're similar to Kem Cards, but in my experience, better. Then again, my Kem cards are 30+ years old, but I do think they've made significant advances.

These feel like the finest thin linen card stock, can easily be bent and go back into shape. No bowing from shuffling,.no dog ears, just feel like they have a thin coating of powder (silky - there's no powder). Non-glossy finish, don't seem to hold fingerprints, but can be wiped clean with no soak-in or trace of a stain.
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

Sounds awesome. I can’t find these cards available retail anywhere on the Internet. The Cartimundi site looks set for large order sizes. I may contact them to see what their minimum order is for these decks of cards. If there are other interested WoVers maybe we can chip in to buy them and divvy it up (though I don’t relish the idea of mailing decks of cards all over the country and adding the extra layer of postage).

When I first read this, I was wondering why anyone would want 2 poker cards. I was thinking of Teliot's thread of the single card from 250+ casinos.

Now I see it is 2 decks of cards.

I can confirm that the Bravo cards are of very good quality.

Welcome to the board jimrr! In order to enter the contest you need to send your predictions via "Private Message" to the Wizard. The easiest way to do this would be to copy your predictions above, then go to the Wizard's first post in this thread. Click on his name (it's in green), this will take you to his profile info, and you will find a button to send him a "new message". Be sure to put something like "Superbowl Props: Don't Open" in the subject line.

If time allows, you can then go back to your post above and "edit" it to remove your guesses from public view.

I must admit that I accidentally opened a few entries. However, I'd like to be able to enter the picks as they come in, so I won't be stuck with doing it all at once on Saturday morning. Any objections? I already sent my picks into AyeCarumba right after I started this thread. Also, as indicated above, if I win I'll give the prize the second place person, so it isn't like I'm motivated to cheat.

Any objections?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you will be giving out the exact same prize regardless of whether you win or lose. Thus since you have no financial interest in this event, and it is your forum, and you were kind enough to set this up, I will speak for the forum and say we all trust you to arbitrate this contest fairly in whatever way is easiest for you.

Since I’m confident that I picked each answer exactly correctly, I have no issues with however you want to handle it. The prize is already as good as mine.
