Very interesting.

In the College Football Playoffs

#1 seed lost
#2 seed lost
#3 seed lost
#4 seed lost

The semifinals are the #5, #6, #7, and #8. I doubt we will ever see that again.

Every team with a bye lost. I'd rather expand the field to 16 and have no byes. The difference between #9-12 and #13-16 was slim.

I go both ways on that one. I love the idea of having more football games, but fewer teams make it more likely the best team will win it all.
Although I love watching the NCAA basketball tournament as a fan, I do not like seeing what I believe to be not one of the best teams winning the tournament. I like to think the winner should be the best team in the country. Although I loved the upset, I didn't feel that Villanova was the best team in the country in 1985.

Monday is the FCS College football title game between Montana St. Bobcats and North Dakota State Bison. Montana St is favored by three but NDSU has won 8 of the last 13 championships.

I look forward to watching this game.

Jokic. No triple double tonight. He only had 9 rebounds to go with his 10 assists….. and 46 points. He routinely puts up stat lines that virtually no one else ever could. He scored 46…. with Wemby playing defense….

Boy are the Browns bad.

On a different level…. Boy are the Steelers bad

Buffalo Bill 48 Detroit Lions 42. The first game in NFL history to end in that score.

Scorigami.!!!

I was at the game. My nephew has Lions season tickets and took me. It was the first NFL game I ever attended.

Now my superstitious family thinks I’m bad luck. lol

Great first game. Trust me, not all NFL games are that exciting.

I was not invited to tonight’s Lions vs. Vikings game, nor would I have gone if I was (I think the Lions will lose).

My sister and my nephew are planning on going to New Orleans *if* the Lions make it to the Super Bowl.

I am jealous. I have never been to a Super Bowl although I did have free tickets to one. Unfortunately a big snow and ice storm hit Atlanta and my flight from London to Atlanta was cancelled.

Watching Knicks game. Shea Gilgeous Alexander is torching them. Announcers keep yapping about how SGA is the favorite to win the MVP

He’s trailing Jokic in the scoring race.
Jokic 3rd in rebounding. SGA 67th
Jokic 2nd in assists. SGA 20th
Jokic FIRST in 3 point %. SGA 120th.

In what they call ‘advance stats’ Jokic leads everyone.

Not sure why this bothers me so much.

Edit. Jokic finished with 35/12/15 today.
But it was MUCH better than that. When he was on the court his team was +33
When he was off the court they were -14.

I’m fixated.

some of the amazing feats of ultramarathon runners:

Donna Urquhart ran 871 miles across Antarctica in 28 days averaging about 31 miles per day - the longest run in a polar region

Dean Karnazes ran 350 miles in 80 hours and 44 minutes without sleep - more than 100 miles per day - it works out to be about 4.5 miles per hour - he also ran 135 miles in Death Valley in 131 degree heat

Ashprihanal Alto ran 3100 miles in just over 40 days - that works out to be about 77 miles per day

It's not often, if ever, that you see a touchdown result in a four-point swing. The Chargers were trailing by 23-6 when they scored a TD, making it 23-12. They lined up to kick the PAT that would have made it 23-13, a ten-point deficit. The attempt was blocked, and the kicker didn't understand the rules.
Rather than catch the ball, he batted it into the ground, thinking it would be dead. It was returned for two points, 25-12., and the Chargers TD resulted in them netting only four points.

Which begs the question, how is it possible a kicker is unaware of the rules of football regarding a PAT being blocked? A guy this weekend made a fair catch on the 2 yard line. Are they not given instructions about what to do? You hear about the endless hours of practice, coaching…. But a punt returner doesn’t even have a rudimentary understanding of when not to field a punt?

I was unaware that the NFL had changed the rules, and thought it was a dead ball. There is no excuse for someone who kicks for a living to be unaware of the rules.

I was taught when I was 12 to stand at the 10 yard line and if the ball is over your head, let it go. How can we expect professionals to know that?

the Commanders are pretty interesting this year - there in the playoffs for the first time in 20 years
that's largely thanks to their rookie of the year qb Jayden Daniels who can beat you with his arm or his legs and their fantastic wideout Terry McLaurin
they're 8.5 point dogs to the Lions next up -
the Lions were tops in the NFL averaging 33.2 p.p.g. and giving up only 19.9 - a very wide 13.3 differential
the Commanders averaged 28.5 p.p.g. and gave up 23 p.p.g.

As a Buffalonian, the Bills have exceeded all expectations this year. They started the season with only one wide receiver returning from last year. Adding Samuel, a rookie (Coleman), Hollins (a journeyman) did not inspire confidence. They lost around 1/2 of their main starting defenders. They look GREAT now. But to me, not as great as the Ravens. The two headed monster of Jackson/Henry looks like the best combo in the league. The Ravens toyed with the Bills earlier in the season. I’m adding it all up for Ravens 31, Bills 27. But hoping for the opposite.

Sam Darnold tonight for the most part has been way too slow in decision making. Looking NOT like the QB you want to lead you going forward. I think these last two weeks have cost Darnold well over $50 million.

a lot of people pulling for the Rams to give the people of L.A. something to feel good about it -

Stafford dedicated their win over the Vikings to "the people at home"

not likely to beat the Eagles in Philly but I'll be pulling for them - would love to see them go all the way - not probable but surely possible

Webanyama is pushing the envelope in the NBA
there has never been a player that tall who could do all the things he can do
he shoots about 9 3s per game - his % is about equal to the league average
he averages about 4 blocks, about 4 assists, about 11 rebounds and about 25 points
this year so far his 2 point % is over 60%

Likely first time in history. Sabres scored one third period goal. On zero shots. Other team had empty net. Sabre had breakaway and had his stick literally chopped in half. Ref awarded a penalty shot, which is an automatic goal when the team has an empty net.

Sort of reminiscent of Buffalo Bills Josh Allen having a receiving touchdown without having a reception.

I don't follow the NBA much, partly because at the start of the season you know which 2-3 teams will be in the championship. Rarely is there any surpise team that jumps up.

charlottesmith, you are being randomly selected for a soul test.

Yeah, thanks for this. I had to go read up on it myself. What I found almost as bizarre is that Ryan McLeod got credit for scoring the goal (completing his first NHL hat trick in the process) even though he never touched the puck!

A 90-year old sports legend in the person of Bob Uecker died yesterday.

But another 90-year old sports legend did not die, instead he celebrated his 90th birthday by giving an interview. What a thoughtful guy. Great way to be 90!

1923 - one of the greatest and most controversial boxing matches of all time - Jack Dempsey vs. Luis Firpo

at 3:54 Firpo knocks Dempsey clean out of the ring onto the floor next to paying customers

reporters helped Dempsey back into the ring - many say Dempsey should have been declared a loser as that is a violation

Dempsey knocked Firpo down 7 times before finally knocking him out - I guess refs didn't stop fights way back then - so very brutal

I was there when Gerry Cooney knocked out Ron Lyle with a punch in the first round that sent him out of the ring and onto the floor. It happened in front of 10,000 fans in Cooneys hometown and the pop was the loudest I'd ever heard. A few months later, Cooney knocked out Ken Norton in 59 seconds, setting up a fight against Larry Holmes.
