it would have been funny if they didn't know any details or history and just sat down at it and began playing. I doubt that was the case

BTW, what was the word on what will happen to that machine? (settle the old rumors on giving it away)

What kind of offers did playing the machine a good 8-12 hours generate? Anybody know now it's over?

According to this LVRJ article, MGM is attempting to give the machine to the winner, pending a review of New Hampshire law (the winner's home state).

While NH has no tribal or other normal, commercial casinos, they do allow Charity Casinos, and I played at one recently.

There were a few table games and some slot-like machines, but the machines were not like the ones in "normal" casinos.
