A man was arrested after he allegedly stole $13,000 worth of gaming chips from a table at Encore Boston Harbor before fleeing Tuesday evening, police said.
Gary Hunt, 35, is facing a charge of larceny over $1,200 and larceny from a building after he was arrested in a parking lot near Encore, Massachusetts State Police announced.
Encore’s security team reported the theft of a “large quantity of chips” just after 6 p.m. to the State Police’s Gaming Enforcement Unit. Everett police responded as well.
Witnesses told investigators that the man, later identified as Hunt, wasn’t playing but was sitting at a game table. State Police said he got up from the table to use his phone multiple times, returning a final time to announce another player had won big.
With this announcement distracting other patrons and staff, Hunt allegedly reached over the table to grab 13 $1,000 chips from the dealer’s tray. He ran and used an emergency exit to flee the casino, State Police said.
With Hunt’s description, Everett and State Police said they located him in a nearby parking lot. He was found with “several” of the orange chips but had allegedly dropped one while leaving the property and discarded two outside the casino, police said.
State Police did not say when Hunt will appear in court.

I had a tenant who owed me $100. I came home from work one day and he peeled off 2 $50 bills to pay me. I thanked him, and he thanked me for floating him for a few days. Then I went to go run an errand. About an hour later I get a call from my housemate telling me the cops are here waiting for me to talk about my tenants. Turns out my tenant committed unarmed bank robbery earlier that day, the cops tracked his van to my driveway and had him under surveillance for most of the day and arrested him when he drove away from the house after I did. After I spoke with the cops, who only wanted my permission to seize some evidence from the trash barrels and then left, I immediately went and spent the $100 cash...
Robbing a casino is just stupid. I mean, they have enough cameras to give a colonoscopy if they want...
They likely lost all their money to that very casino or one not far away, so it is like getting back what's "theirs" and at the same time potentially coming out ahead without earning it!
For them, robbing a bank wouldn't be as satisfying!
Plus they're just lazy and robbing a bank would require balls, planning and effort. Stealing from the chip rack is as simple as swiping your paws at a honey pot and running with as much as you can!
I get the need to add charges in case the “main” crime is difficult to prosecute or the perpetrator doesn’t actually follow through for whatever reason. Such charges as “breaking and entering” or “conspiring to commit…” make sense in this regard. Stealing from a building is a new one to me… Is there also stealing in the open air?!?
