Seconded! I already make it a point to not read the thread until after I've played the day's puzzle.Quote: WizardI motion that we not bother putting our solutions in spoiler tags. Let's get in the habit of not checking this thread until after playing each day.

Four again for me today. My grid looks very similar to ksdjdj's, except I got lucky and found a letter on my third word.

I agree with Ed Collins & WordleBot in that I probably should have used a probing word for my second guess.

My entire strategy is to use probing words. Means I get a lot of 4/6s, but I haven’t failed one yet (other than the first time I played it).

Hi, Babs!
Note that not checking the thread until after you play won't necessarily help. You could check it immediately after you play and accidentally already see solutions for the next game.Quote: WizardI motion that we not bother putting our solutions in spoiler tags. Let's get in the habit of not checking this thread until after playing each day.
For example, let's say someone in a different time zone, on the other side of the pond, plays Wordle #301. They play it and then come here and post their solution. So far so good... however, on the the west coast it might only be 3:00 pm. (In Alaska and Hawaii even earlier.) The west coast players still have 9 hours left to play the prior game, Wordle #300!
Maybe they play #300 within the next few hours (maybe in the evening after dinner), and then come here and post their result and check the thread. If so, it's just too easy for them to accidentally see a solution for Wordle #301 which was posted several hours earlier.
Of course, I don't know how often that might happen or what percentage of the members are on the other side of the planet, etc.
For that reason, I still like the idea of the spoiler tags. Of course, it won't matter to me because I play each day's game as early as possible, even if I have to set my clock ahead, temporarily. I do this specifically just so I won't accidentally see a solution or even get an accidental hint in this and other forums/websites!

I searched for "Wordle!" and an app comes up, but the blocks that people are posting... that color scheme isn't used in that app. I'm confused.

ETA -- OK, now I am confused. Everything I have seen online says that Wordle resets globally at the same time. However, I just checked my Wordle stats, and is says the next Wordle will be available in 13h,10m. That would be midnight, EDT. So what Wordle is showing me would jibe with Ed's concern above. I'm hesitant to just delete my response, which seems to be incorrect, because I have seen multiple websites that support it. So, I'll just put it under a spoiler.
No, that's not true. A bunch of people are already posting their results for Wordle #302. It's already Sunday, April 17, 2022 in parts of Australia. Here's my updated Wordle Letter Frequency chart, using the 2,308 list of valid Wordle answers. (It was 2,309 words... but I read the NY Times recently removed yet another word, HARRY.)
Using this chart, here are the top 25 Wordle words with the most "Frequency Points.":
As shown above, SLATE comes in at #1 with 1,432 points: (365 + 200 + 306 + 139 + 422 = 1,432.)
The very last word in the list, #2,308, is NYMPH, with just 307 Frequency Points. (37 + 22 + 61 + 50 + 137 = 307)

I just tried to recreate you list above and came very close to yours. Everything was within a few points. We must have used lists of words from slightly different points in time. I also eliminate words with double letters, so SOOTY didn't make my list.
So, I got to wondering about a strategy that looked at matches in both position and anywhere.
The following list is the top 100 words where I award two points for a match in position and one point for a match out of position. I also require the word have five distinct letters.

Yay!!! Glad to hear this!.Quote: Wizard...I think I'm going to switch to STARE as my starting word.
I didn't like you using STEAK. That bothered me, lol. You're basically sacrificing an entire column when you do so, since the letter K is not a frequently seen letter at all, ranking near the bottom of all letters.
If all you did was replace the K and use STEAL or STEAM or STEAN or STEAR, any of those would be better than STEAK.
You'll like STARE. On average, STARE will leave you with just 61.9 possibilities left for your second guess. With STEAK it was 121.5.
And yea, I most likely used the most current word list that removed the seven known words that were advertised as being removed, from the initial list of 2,315 words. And yes, all of your words near the top of your list are EXCELLENT starting words, so I definitely like your point system, including dropping starting words that contain double letters.

I've become a big fan of NOT going after a solution on Row 2, and instead, using all five columns to attempt to nail down the other letters. This is especially true if I get green boxes in Row 1. (I now KNOW what letter goes there. No sense in wasting that column on future rows when I can use it to gain additional information.)
As I look back on many of my earlier games, I wasn't doing this at all. Instead, my Row 2 word was a possible solution. It appears WordleBot is fond of a probing word on Row 2, hence my reason for now playing this way.
In all nine of these past games, notice my second row play is a probing word - it's not a "guess," as I know it can't be the solution to the puzzle.

The last four letters are all displayed in green. You then realize the answer could be any of the following nine words: EIGHT, FIGHT, LIGHT, MIGHT, NIGHT, RIGHT, SIGHT, TIGHT, or WIGHT.
What do you play on Row #2 and Row #3, to guarantee you solve the puzzle on Row #4?

Since 'T' is used twice in the possible solution, TIGHT, it would need to be used twice in any probing word to determine if a second 'T' was in the solution. It may be possible to find two words, with one that uses 'T' twice, which would eliminate/confirm 8 of the 9 possible solution first letters, but I can't think of what they could be.
Conversely, I could use a word like WRENS for Row #2, and (assuming none of these are in the solution), use FLAME for Row #3. If any of the letters in these two words is shown to be in the solution, then that letter must be the first letter in the solution. If not, the solution must be TIGHT as all other possibilities have been eliminated.

You are close... but STREW and then FLINT won't quite work.
Let's say you get a yellow box for the letter T and that's it. If so, you eliminated four words.. good work... but the following five words will still be possible: FIGHT, LIGHT, MIGHT, NIGHT, TIGHT.
And then assume you play FLINT as mentioned, and you get a yellow box for the letter I (that's a capital letter i) and a green box for the letter T.
If so, two words are still possible for Row #4: MIGHT and TIGHT.
