Winner! Winner! Beef for dinner!

It's hard to pick a version for this classic. Let's go with the songwriter's release from 1948...

--------------------------------------

And from the category "Alternative Rock", name that song...

The other night I dreamt of knives, continental drift divide
Mountains sit in a line, Leonard Bernstein
Leonid Brezhnev, Lenny Bruce and Lester Bangs
Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom!
You symbiotic, patriotic, slam but neck
Right? Right!
Have you tried 22 tonight? I said 22.

It’s hard to think of songs that people might know. Or, it’s easy to think of songs that would stump people.

Could be easy, could be impossible, depends on your leanings I suppose.

Lady finger, dipped in moonlight
Writing, "What for?", across the morning sky
Sunlight splatters, dawn with answer
Darkness shrugs and bids the day goodbye
Speeding arrow, sharp and narrow
What a lot of fleeting matters you have spurned
Several seasons with their treasons
Wrap the babe in scarlet colors, call it your own
A falling knife has no handle.

Ding! Ding! Correct!

Not a huge hit when first released, the song just seemed to grow bigger in the years that followed to where everyone knows it.

How about a coal-mining song?

Oh the midnight, and the mornin', and the middle of day,
Are the same to the miner who labors away,
Where the demons of death often come by surprise,
One fall of the slate and you're buried alive.

Dog Hand

Artist = Merle Travis

On "The Big Bang Theory" episode where Sheldon and Raj enter the steam tunnels below their university to simulate conditions in a coal mine, Sheldon sings the chorus and the final verse of the song.

Here are the lyrics to a Thanksgiving song...

I've got plenty to be thankful for
I haven't got a great big yacht
To sail from shore to shore
Still I've got plenty to be thankful for

I've got plenty to be thankful for
No private car, no caviar
No carpet on my floor
Still I've got plenty to be thankful for

I've got eyes to see with
Ears to hear with
Arms to hug with
Lips to kiss with
Someone to adore

How could anybody ask for more?
My needs are small, I buy 'em all
At the five and ten cent store
Oh, I've got plenty to be thankful for

What film did this song appear in?

For a bonus, which Vegas casino was originally going to name itself after the film's title?

Sounds like Pennies From Heaven.
Haven't Googled it.
No idea on the Casino, I'll guess Circus Circus.
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

Winner! Winner! Turkey Dinner!

The title is simply "I've Got Plenty to be Thankful For". It was the Thanksgiving song from the musical "Holiday Inn" starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire...

The builder was going to name the casino "Holiday Inn" but, after visiting the construction site, decided to name it after the substance filling his socks.

The famous hotel chain grabbed the film title instead.

Well, I guess I stumped everyone. The coal-mining song I quoted is "Dark as a Dungeon" by Merle Travis. Here's a link to a YouTube video of the song:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nwveFrwzFTE

The lines I quoted are the third verse of the song. The lines sung by Sheldon in "The Big Bang Theory" are the chorus and the fourth verse, which come immediately after my quoted lines.

When I hear this song, I can almost feel how difficult and dangerous the job of a coal miner is.

Travis also wrote and recorded many other mining-related songs.

I looked it up, so I was out. But I wouldn’t have gotten that one.

Mine has been out there long enough for people to lose interest. “St Stephen”, by the Grateful Dead. Either you’re a Deadhead and it’s easy, or you don’t care and it’s impossible. (I’m not a Deadhead, but I’m a music guy and I’m old. So I know that stuff.)

From the category "Worst Ever Lyrics in a Hit Song"

and I feel like a-lovin' you
Love, you're such a sweet thing,
Good enough to eat thing
And it's just a-what I'm gonna do

Ooh love to hold ya, ooh love to kiss ya
Ooh love I love it so, oh love you're sweeter
Sweeter than sugar
Ooh love, I won't let you go

It was called Bubble Gum music. In the 60s it appealed to what we now call tweeners: old enough to buy music, but not really old enough to understand it. These guys, The 1910 Fruitgum Company, The Archies, Tommy Roe, The Royal Guardsmen, Tommy James and the Shondels.... “Yummy Yummy”, The Ohio Express.

Age of Aquarius

Ding! Ding! Winner!

From the musical "Hair" with The 5th Dimension getting the hit single. Although it's dated, this song keeps popping up every five or ten years. It's just one of those tunes that captures its new age era. In fact, the term "New Age" refers to the dawning of the age of Aquarius.

Here's a super hard one without the internet.

What's the next line?

Quando sono solo
Sogno all'orizzonte
E mancan le parole
Sì lo so che non c'è luce
In una stanza quando manca il sole
Se non ci sei tu con me, con me
Su le finestre
Mostra a tutti il mio cuore
Che hai acceso
Chiudi dentro me
La luce che
Hai incontrato per strada

Most are familiar with the tune, but don't know the lyrics to this song which is closely associated with an iconic LV landmark.

Who's gonna patronize a little bitty two by four kinda store anymore?

This is the opening song from the Music Man, on the train packed with traveling salesmen. The rhythm of the song is set to the rhythmic movement of the train. The song ends with "You Gotta Know the Territory."
So many better men, a few of them friends, are dead. And a thousand thousand slimy things live on, and so do I.

And from the category "Show Tunes", name that song...

Why it's the Model T Ford made the trouble,
made the people wanna go, wanna get, wanna get,
wanna get up and go seven, eight, nine, ten, twelve,
fourteen, twenty-two, twenty-three miles to the county seat
Yes sir, yes sir
Who's gonna patronize a little bitty two by four kinda store anymore?

Here's a super hard one without the internet.

What's the next line?

Quando sono solo
Sogno all'orizzonte
E mancan le parole
Sì lo so che non c'è luce
In una stanza quando manca il sole
Se non ci sei tu con me, con me
Su le finestre
Mostra a tutti il mio cuore
Che hai acceso
Chiudi dentro me
La luce che
Hai incontrato per strada

Most are familiar with the tune, but don't know the lyrics to this song which is closely associated with an iconic LV landmark.

Here's an oldie from the 50's:

Now Dooley had a feeling we were going to war
So he went out and enlisted in a fighting corps
But he landed in the brig for raising such a storm
When they tried to put him in a uniform

Sounds like...
a song from the Music Man

I don’t know the name of it, but the last line is, “When he calls the tune, the piper pays him.” Definitely from The Music Man. Edit: I looked it up, after seeing gordonm888’s spoiler. The one salesman says my line, and then the other says his. So, his last line is right. My daughter was in this (chorus) as her senior class play, abut 10 years ago.

It seems Italian. With your hint I'm going to guess "O Sole Mio", a Venetian gondolier staple.
Have you tried 22 tonight? I said 22.

Ding! Ding! Winners!

Yes that's "Rock Island" (for the railroad) from "The Music Man" by Meredith Willson. In an interesting side note, the most famous song from this musical is the ballad "Till There Was You". It was the only show tune The Beatles ever covered. According to Willson's family, The Beatles' cover version of "Till There Was You" makes more money for the estate than all other Music Man royalties combined.

And, while we await some rulings, from the category "Post Punk", name that song...

Meltdown expected, the wheat is growin' thin
Engines stop running, but I have no fear

Good guesses... Gialmere is the closest so far...

... however, no gondola rides are offered at this landmark which is 1,000 feet wide and up to 460 feet tall...

I'll give it a little more time...

With that carefully worded hint I'm now thinking the fountains at Bellagio which would also fit the Italian lyrics. Unfortunately, I don't know any Bellagio songs.

London Calling. I saw The Clash and Elvis Costello on back-to-back nights in 1980. It was as amazing as it sounds.

Ding! Ding! Winner!!

London Calling it is. I saw The Clash open for The Who in '82. (That was the first of the seemingly endless Who farewell tours.)

And in the category "Country/Western", name that song...

They call me redneck, white trash and blue collar
But I could change all that if I had a couple million dollars
I keep hearing that money is the root of all evil
And you can't fit a camel through the eye of a needle
I'm sure that's probably true,
But it still sounds pretty cool

Yes, an easy one to compensate for all the hard ones. Heh.

And from the category "Classic Torch Songs", name that song...

When he went away, the blues walked in and met me
If he stays away, old rocking chair will get me
All I do is pray the Lord above will let me
Walk in the sun once more
