There is a plan to try and turn an empty field in Hungary (near Bratislava and Vienna) into Vegas Europe. Do you think it will succeed?

Vegas Europe? Did they get that name / idea from Euro Disney?

But seriously, it depends.

What's the attitude among the locals regarding gambling?

How close are other casinos?

And how are they defining 'Vegas Europe'? That tends to imply several casinos in a cluster. Can such a thing be jammed into 'an empty field'? How big is this field?

Your link didn't work because you left out 'http://'

This link works: www.eurovegashungary.com - Euro Vegas Hungary , but doesn't load well on my computer.

I also found this: www.euro-vegas.eu . This has interesting info, but it's a Flash site, so I couldn't copy it here. It does indicate that the area is 828 acres, and they plan on building 5 casinos, good roads and relatively close airports. How close? It's hard to estimate, but about 15 miles to Bratislava, 40 miles to Vienna and 90 miles to Budapest. Is the Bratislava airport a world class airport? If not, then maybe this should be called Euro A.C.

The goal of 8 million visitors per year is fairly modest. Las Vegas hit that number in 1972.

It's about 3.5 hour drive from Prague, 5 hours from Munich, and 1.75 hours from Budapest.

If/when it happens, its probably somewhere I would visit for novalty value, but I dont think it could compare to the real Vegas atmosphere.

I was going to ask what else is around there that might draw visitors, but then there's nothing else really around Vegas to draw visitors. Just as before Disneyworld there was nothing to draw people to Orlando.

BTW, spaking of Vegas, perhaps Downtown should change its name to "Little Las Vegas," or maybe "Vegastown." Think about it.

You're thinking like an outsider and/or a tourist.

I get the feeling that a lot of the locals are not too pleased that millions of people come to "Las Vegas" and never set foot in Las Vegas.

I'm guilty as well. I intended to get downtown last week, but never made it. Hell, even if I had managed to get to the Stratosphere or the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop as I had planned, I would have been in city limits, but those didn't happen either.

The closest I got was the Sahara.

In my defense, I am an outsider and a tourist.

When you rely on the monorail, it's hard to go anywhere not on or near a monorail station. I went through that on my first trip to Vegas. Of course since you were going to the convention center often, the monorail is a better choice than the Ace.
