Going by the previous polls and general comments, it seems a weekend is the best possible date, pedning whatever globe-trotting or mountain-climbing the Wizard will be involved with (it's not WoVCon without the guest of honor). So my suggestiosn are Saturday May 12th and Sunday May 13th. But I wouldn't be opposed to a weekday WoVCon, either, at any time between May 7th and 17th.
I would consider June, too, but not April. July, alas, is out of the question.
The venue will likely remain the Chicago Brew Pub at 4 Queens (should it still be there by May, Vegas being in constant flux and all...), but I'm open to any other Downtown venue, like the microbrew place at MSS. I would even consider a Strip venue. I think Downtown is cozier and offers better gaming. But as most out of towners stay on the Strip, that has advantages as well.
All input is welcome.
I'm hoping it is in early May, but you never know with these things, so I won't vote....
On a somewhat related note, I'm hoping the meeting is before 5/13. There's an exhibit until 5/13 at the Springs Reserve that looks interesting, and may interest others, so here's the link: Space: A Journey To Out Future.
Quote: DJTeddyBearIf all goes according to plan, I *may* be in Vegas in the next couple months, to have a meeting with a game distributor about Poker For Roulette.

I voted for the 12th. The 13th works as well. June could also work, but I'd have to see specific dates there.
Quote: hook3670I know these dates may not work for most, but I will be in town from May 2-May 7.
I considered the first week of May, but if I do that I lose one day off to my vacation time. Sorry.
Quote: WizardThe 12th and 13th of May are both good for me. It looks like the only bad time in May for me will be the first week.
Hey, that's great!
The first week won't work for me, either. So that's two of us already :)
Quick joke:
Q How many Outsiders does it take to screw-in a light bulb?
A That information costs one trillion Stars.
Apologies to those unfamiliar with Larry Niven's Known Space
When the date is really set, I will make my reservations, but I am too cheap a guy to book and then pay change fees.
Quote: DocI just voted for "Other day in May", but don't interpret that as a serious objection to either of the proposed dates. I am such a cheapskate that on my Vegas visits I frequently get out of town (to Laughlin or Palm Springs) for the higher-priced nights in Las Vegas. If there is a WoVCon ][ going on, I'll take that as justification to pay the higher rates.
Back in '06, I scheduled my flights to and from Orlando to fall on Thursday, because flying on Friday or weekends cost more. I wound up returning to work on a Friday, and we stayed at the office til 4 am. Then we worked Saturday and Sunday. If I hadn't been cheap, I'd have missed that delightful weekend ;)
I'm not making a point. Just telling a story.
Anyway, I'll be in Vegas almost 2 weeks. May 6/18. I have no definite plans on what to do. Oh, I know what I'll do, but it doesn't matter when. SO I wouldn't be adverse to meeting outside of WoVCon ][, or even holding a WoVCon ][.1 or a pre-WovCon-Con :) Of course I can't speak for Mike. So <shrug>

Again, apologies to those not familiar with Larry Niven's work.
At the WoV G2E Dinner in Oct '11, it was 4 of us at Buca de Bepo for a couple hours. The principale topic was the Wizard's Waitress Jeopardy. Afterwards, we went across the street to Terribles to play BJ for a few hours. I talk about it in the Day 3 section of my trip log.
Quote: AcesAndEightsAt past WoVCons, what were the main activities? Or is the main activity just a dinner?
Officially there has only been one WoVCon, back in June 2010. There is a report on the board somewhere. You may count the first Wizard Coffee in '09, which I think was held at Palace Station, call it WoVCon 0.
So, the activites at WoVCon 0 were lunch (I believe witha trivia contest) and then Pai Gow (tiles). In WovCon I there was lunch and trivia, followed by poker at Binion's (I forget where Lunch took place).
In keeping with tradition,t here will be lunch and a trivia contest at WoVCon ][ (I'll rpovide it if the Wizard doesn't; something short), followed by some kind of gambling. Given the venue at the 4 Queens Downtown, I'm inclined to suggest craps at MSS at 20X odds, or at the 4 Queens itslef which offers good odds too (I forget whether it's 5X or 10X), or at El cortez (100X? 10X? I'm not sure).
But I'm open to suggestions. We could also play BJ, for example, or try Dan's EZ PGP at the Golden Nugget or elsewhere (of course moving away from Downtown is bound to be problematic).
We should also head to the train tracks and try the coin experiment.
Quote: DJTeddyBearAt the WoV Lunch in Sept '10, it was 6 of us
What was the one last year, when Croupier was there. The
point is, everybody talks about these get togethers for months
on end, and almost nobody shows up. Why bother.

Sounds like fun...I'm going to Vegas once in March and once in April already, so we'll see if I can get away with another trip in May, and by "get away with" I mean there are multiple angles I have to work here...the financial angle, the girlfriend angle, and the work angle. So it's probably less than 50% right now. But it would be fun to meet some of you.
If I end up going I'll vote on preferred gambling activities. I would prefer Blackjack and then craps, but I'd be fine with whatever.
I wasn't at that one.Quote: EvenBobWhat was the one last year, when Croupier was there.
Not that it matters to me, I'll not be there at either option.
Quote: thecesspitI thought WoVCON II was coinciding with Ms Blonde's weigh-in in October.
In the first attempts to set a date, it would have taken palce near her birthday.
A weigh-in in October would be great, especially if some of her bettors are there to pay up. Alas, I can't make it in October unless I want to be fired.
Quote:Not that it matters to me, I'll not be there at either option.
Too bad. Is any other date convenient for you? I probably can't amke it more than once a year to Vegas (make that certainly), but acceosry WoVCons would be a nice thing to have. Maybe you can even set up WovCon ]I[ (it doens't ahve to be only once a year, either)
I've run out of Known Space jokes. So:
Q How many Marsies does it take to screw-in a light bulb?
A The light bulb will not be free until the sands run red with Earther blood!
I thought I'd try something even mroe obscure ;)
Anyone care to identify the source? Hint: it was not on network TV.
Quote: DJTeddyBearOn the subject of a WoVCon in October: G2E is 10/1 to 10/4.
Crap! That means I'll have to pick between HB's weigh-in and G2E. That's almost poll-worthy: Hot Blonde in a bikini, or talking to folks about the game I'm trying to develop?
Q How many bureucrats it taks to screw-in a light bulb?
A Let's see: one to file the malfunctioning illumination device form, one to stamp the form, one to file the stamped form, one to missplace the form, one to re-file the form, one to re-stamp the form, one to find the form seven weeks later, one to launch an investigation as to why two forms were filed for a single malfunctioning illumination device, and one to leak to the press his government agency's budget isn't enough as they can't afford to replace burnt light bulbs.
Q How many Vulcans does it take to screw-in a light bulb?
A The logical amount.
So, all those of you voting for another date in May, which date within the 7th and 17th would be agreeable to you?
Quote: NareedIs it even worth bumping any more?
No.
Go back to Niven. I'd like a Footfall joke. :)Quote: NareedUnfortunately for you, I have many more light bulb jokes :)
One of those votes was mine, so I'll reply. Most any date in that range is fine with me, just so long as I know the date before I need to make my reservations. I usually book a flight and room about two months in advance, so sometime in the next month, roughly. As I indicated earlier, my preference (absent other input) would be for a weekday so that I slip out of town on the expensive nights, but I am more interested in there being good attendance, which might point toward the weekend meeting days.Quote: NareedSo, all those of you voting for another date in May, which date within the 7th and 17th would be agreeable to you?
Is there any coherent feedback on who is expecting to be able to attend? Any chance of the locals other than the Wizard making it this year? I don't have any idea of how far in advance the casino employees on this forum know their (basic) work schedules, so I don't know whether that can be input to the date/time decisions.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is, just pick the date instead of asking people.

One of his suggestions as a member of SIGMA was that hospitals stem financial losses by spreading rumors in Spanish within the Latino community that emergency rooms are killing patients in order to harvest their organs for transplants, in order to reduce illegal immigrants' use of emergency rooms.[8]

Do you leave town on Friday or Saturday? If the latter, then May 12th sort of works for you, if you don't mind driving to Laughlin or California or wherever you go late in the afternoon.
On FinsRule's advice, though, I'm choosing May 12th, since ti also ahd one more vote than May 13th.

Saturday 5/12 is fine, and I'll be there. At least I'll be there in Las Vegas, since I just made my flight and room reservations. In order for me to be at WoVCon][ someone will need to let me know about final decisions on place and time.

Great!
I'll let you know. I expect a formal date anouncement soon, and a poll as to the gambling to be done afterwards. The place will likely be the pub/bar at 4 Queens.
BTW is anyone up for the Emperor's Buffet Challenge? I let down Croupier on that last year, and I'd like to at least finish it before the property gets rebranded.
Some day I will check out their car collection, and last year (or maybe the year before) I considered going to see the troupe of Asian acrobats that was performing there, but I don't think I'll be going to that Palace for the food in the foreseeable future.Quote: NareedBTW is anyone up for the Emperor's Buffet Challenge?
This trip, I will be staying at the Rio. BTW, does anyone know what is going on in Las Vegas that has the room rates at all of the Caesars properties significantly higher the previous weekend (May 4-6) than on the WoVCon][ weekend?

Is the challenge simply to eat a meal at the Emperor's Buffet?
Thanks. I'm not into horses or brutal "entertainment", so I was not up on those events. Two years ago I watched the derby on TV at the Searchlight Nugget, waiting for the tables to open so I could get my souvenir chip.Quote: FinsRuleDerby weekend, fight weekend
I assume the fight (don't even know who is competing) will be on Saturday night. The Caesars properties have higher-than-normal room rates on into the following week. I will arrive on Wednesday 5/9, and that night at the Rio will be the highest rate I will pay, even higher than the following Friday and Saturday nights. It just seemed odd.
If so, I already won.Quote: AcesAndEightsIs the challenge simply to eat a meal at the Emperor's Buffet?
I wrote about it in my hotel report, which became the official WoV IP review.
Quote: AcesAndEightsIs the challenge simply to eat a meal at the Emperor's Buffet?
Well, it's not quite a challenge.
The idea was for Croupier, his wife and I to sample every dish available at the Emperor's Buffet at the IP, and rate each one. This came from the many comments deriding said buffet, including mine that it would have to improve considerably in order to be considered bad.
Quote: DocThis trip, I will be staying at the Rio. BTW, does anyone know what is going on in Las Vegas that has the room rates at all of the Caesars properties significantly higher the previous weekend (May 4-6) than on the WoVCon][ weekend?
Good choice. Make sure you try the buffet.
BTW I did notice, weeks ago, rates for that week were high. I thought it was due to being the weekend of may 5th, which is Cinco de Mayo (meaning, coincidentally, the Fifth of May), a holiday much celebrated by people of Mexican descent.
