The very first time I traveled to Vegas, after expenses, I barely had enough for 2 hours of .25 cent video poker. Somehow it lasted 2 days out of 3.
But I saw Wayne Newton driving down the Strip in a convertible smoking a fat cigar. Made my trip. (at least I think it was him and refuse to believe otherwise.)
Quote: rxwineI bet it's 10 or 20 percent savings just buying stuff.
I think most stuff costs at least twice as much on the strip.
When you leave the airport, go right on Trop. There's a Von's grocery store maybe a mile a way. Depending how much stuff you consume, you could easily save over $100.

Warning.
Tough to derail a miscellaneous thread, but I believe you've done it. Now stop with the demographics, please, or I will have to suspend you for hijacking. Thanks.
I guess its a matter of lifestyle choices, but I do think there should be a measure of Vegas Baby in all trips,
Sure some people go to Walmart and buy a private coffee maker for their room on the Boulder Strip and then just leave it there, Sure some people do their own laundry (yeah on vacation to boot), Sure 'it takes all types' including Right Way players but heck its Vegas Baby, No vons, no laundry, no penny pinching, no hedging. And tip the dealers and tray lizards.
Sure some people take a cooler and some cheap swill up to a cheap room and guzzle themselves blotto but its Vegas,
Even if you are in a Limo from the airport a side trip to a booze shop or convenient store (no, its not convenience, read his sign closely) can save you money. But its Vegas. Dreams. Hopes, Not Vons.
of course if you live in Vegas, its magic is all worn off but I'd still not go to vons on a day I visit a casino,

"I do believe" is a turn of phrase.
But the warning is in response to multiple complaints and for basic forum moderation.
It's not to the general benefit to get into this type of divisive argument on a gambling forum. Roger (and you, if that's the kind of fight you want) have the entire internet to argue it. So take it elsewhere.

There are more white people in the NHL than black people.
There are more black people in the NBA and NFL than white people, respectively.
There are more men in computer, technology, mathematical fields than women.
There are more women in child care and elementary schooling than men.
These statements aren't racist or sexist. They are either true or false. Have we gone so overboard as to claim facts are racist now? Ugh.

I don't want to belabor the point, but Roger Knit was responding as to why homelessness rates might be lower in Scotland, Denmark, and Norway. The response was:
"They have a higher percentage of whites and, therefore, a higher IQ in their overall population."
We can explore why this statement is racist, with or without intent. But then we have to talk about nuance, which by experience, some people don't seem to understand.

Facts are indeed better than made up stuff, but that doesn't mean someone isn't still racist.
If you have a large majority of posts of facts pointing out negatives of other races and either never include your own or are constantly defending your race, you're probably more a racist than not.

I also think it is a pretty hard thing to keep track of. Still, according to Wikipedia, the homeless ratio in the U.S. is about average for first world countries. This surprises me. I think other countries have more access to mental health care and I'd guess they also have stronger traditional family structures.
Both the UK and Canadia have almost triple our homeless ratio. Surprising to me.
But, who dares question Wikipedia?

If you go one step deeper, I think you will find a source for the disparity, which is how each nation defines the state of homelessness. UK is very complicated and quite encompassing. US is vague and seems to pertain to just a subset of those the UK counts. Canada does not have a listing in that table for a 3 way comparison.
I genuinely don't know how homeless would survive most of Canada winter.
I've spent about 4 months of my life in Canada, 2 months in UK but most of that in London. My OPINION would be that there is little homelessness outside London, where you do see some areas that might be frequented. I think they do a lot to get them off the street there. Saw many more, my first visit in 1977, than I did in 2000 and 2014.
Less dense but still IMO more prevalent is homelessness in the major US cities of Wash DC, Seattle, Portland, NYC, Chicago, and most of Florida coastline without distinction.
Canada seems to have larger than I would expect populations in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. Was a lot in Winnipeg when I was a kid, but I think that changed by now. PG could probably advise.
Back then, the Winnipeg Tribe situation was a disaster. They were everywhere, all poor, some with alcohol issues, just wandering the streets. They had no food, junk shelter if any, no job prospects, terrible reservation schools, the area was heavily prejudiced against them, and prairie weather is very rough, especially winter. Really strong memories of seeing them as kids, and the dismissive and derogatory remarks about them.
I'm pretty sure Winnipeg has figured it out to some degree, and come to some accommodation with their homeless, but I haven't been there in about 35 years now.

I see it like this - claiming that the IQ of a population is higher based specifically on the color of their skin is completely racist. Remember, "racism" is defined as the belief that skin color is the determinant for characteristics, and the claim that white skin = higher IQ is exactly that. That's not a judgement on the poster; stating black folk are more resistant to melanoma would also be a racist statement. It also happens to both a positive and true. Not to be a pedant, but I'm trying to clear enough mud so that the line can be seen, if you can dig it.
Now, I generally look for the bigotry, the intolerance of those different from one's self, inside these "honorable" racist statements, as I have no difficulties with and rather enjoy intelligent discussion about difficult topics. I realize some comments can go over the line, but I also realize that sometimes there's a sincere attempt at discussion that causes offense unintentionally. I found RogerKint's comment to sting a little, but I can also admit I'm overly sensitive and actively looking for it. And this is kind of where my point lies. When talking about deeply personal topics about things such as race, religion, politics, sexuality, you kind of do have to put more effort into explaining yourself properly specifically because of these knee jerk sensitivities. I can see that comment being an off the cuff shot at non-whites, but I can also see it as a hasty reply that could have unspoken fact or reasoning behind it. There's no way for me to know for sure, so the only option is to bring it to light an express concern about it, which Bab's did, in hopes that the challenge will stick in one's head and perhaps have a positive result the next time comments on topics such as these have been made. There's nothing wrong with discussing our differences. There is something wrong with wantonly disparaging an entire subset of people.
Simply put, we have a responsibility to make this place one which is welcoming and open for all peoples. All I ask is for some effort. If you make an attempt to state your stance in an intelligent way that tries to avoid offense, I'll make every effort to understand your side and exercise leniency. If you don't make that attempt, then we are stuck having days of bickering on definitions and rules instead. And gods, but do I prefer the former.
That is all. Enjoy your Monday. Go Eagles.
Quote: PokerGrinderWe still have a lot of homeless in Winnipeg. We do have quite a few shelters available for people to stay at though. I’m amazed that some of the homeless can make it through the winters in Winnipeg.
Toronto is the same. Canada has a system of "extreme cold weather alerts". When triggered, extra shelters open and there are volunteers combing the streets making sure the homeless are sheltered and/or warm enough to survive on a temporary basis.
As I believe, I think there are two levels of racism; one where one does not realize that they are being racist (ignorance), and another level where they realize that their statement is racist (a factually incorrect belief in an inferiority based strictly on race) but doesn't care.
It is not a crime to be racist. But this forum I hope is well above that level.

I wonder if you could build a successful racing program much like pro-wrestling? It would all be fake. The cars would be designed to blow apart at will with lots of smoke and flame. Then be reassembled later.
Drivers would practice specialized accidents. Car drivers would show up on the track illegally joining the race. Oil would be poured on the track. Racers would drive against traffic.
Drivers and owners would get hit over the head with aluminum chairs.
Just a dream.
If the drivers get bored they will lose position or waste fuel or rubber or something.Quote: TigerWuI don't understand why car races are so long. Why do they need to do 500 laps? It's only the last 5 or 10 laps that are worth watching. Such a boring sport.
I once made a hundred dollar bet when I was in a Los Angeles dorm room with a guy who didn't realize about a sunny afternoon in the Carolinas ... he thought the race was live. Needless to say, I won that bet,

My dad often said the NBA would be more profitable if they gave every team 100 points and 5 minutes on the clock, let them fight it out from there. Take it on the road, 10 or 12 teams, 5 or 6 games a night.
You reminded me of him when you said that. :)

When I coexisted with neighbors through walls, I thought about marketing a device that you attach to your wall (or ceiling). It would pick up sound from a noisy neighbor, amplifies it several times over and play it back to the neighbor.
Every time the neighbor stops to figure out why it is so noisy, of course the sound would also instantly stop. Perhaps has an added effect of driving them nuts trying to figure out what is going on.
Of course, I don't actually make any devices.
The best cure for thin walls is to get rich and move out, Although one couple had a better solution: they chatted thru their student housing wall for years, then dated briefly and got married.

Quote: onenickelmiracleI'd guess it's a pipe
That reminds me of my first year in the dorms at UF. The older dorms still had steam heat. On the first cold night of the fall, the boilers came on and the pipes started rattling. Actually, banging was more like it -- it literally sounded like someone was hitting the pipes with a hammer.
I would venture to guess that maybe 2% of all Florida homes have steam heat, and 0% of homes south of Orlando. So, this was a very new experience for the vast majority of the dorm residents, most of whom ran out of the building, freaked out about what could possibly making that noise!
Amen to that, brother!Quote:Popcorn ceilings are just awful. Bad news, I'll tell you hwat.
